Abstract
A flame arrester for use in a gas pipeline 1 comprises a series of grills 2, 3, 4 of decreasing mesh size. The first grill 2 has large holes and is formed from large diameter bars or rods. Intermediate grills 3 have progressively decreasing hole sizes and are formed from smaller diameter rods or bars. The final grill 4 comprises a flame arresting mesh having smaller holes than the intermediate grills. The grills may be arranged in a mirror image fashion (not shown) in order to arrest flames approaching from either direction. Grills 2 and 3 are intended to progressively cool and slow a flame front travelling through the pipe such that the mesh 4 is able to quench the flame.
Description
V
Gas pipeline flame arrestor This invention relates to a device for extinguishing flames in a gas pipeline.
Many off-shore gas rig platforms pump gas to mainland storage depots where the gas is stored or distributed where required. However, if a fire broke out in the pipeline it would be almost impossible to stop it travelling to the rig and the mainland depot without completely sealing off the pipeline, which may take too long. To overcome this the present invention proposes a large holed grill with large diameter bars or rods leading to further grills with ever decreasing hole sizes and ever decreasing bar or rod diameters until the arrangement finishes with a fine mesh of the smallest holes of the arrangement.
If a fire starts in a pipeline which has this arrangement incorporated in it, when the fireball reaches the first grill with tremendous energy it will lose some of its heat and some of its speed, however the large diameter bars or rods will be strong enough to cope. Then, as the fireball has less energy and heat, each following stage need not be as strong or as course as the previous one until there is so little energy and heat left that a conventional flame arrestor mesh can finally bring the flame to a halt.
Preferably, the arrangement of grills and mesh will be mirrored in the pipeline to cope with flames travelling in either direction.
An example of the invention will now be described by referring to the accompanying drawing: -figure 1 shows a 3-D cut away of the gas pipeline flame arrestor.
A gas pipeline 1 has incorporated into it a large holed grill 2 with large diameter bars or rods which then leads to grills with ever decreasing hole sizes 3 and smaller diameter rods or bars until finally ending with a flame arresting mesh 4.
This arrangement may then be mirrored to deal with flames approaching from either side.
Claims (2)
- Claims I A large holed grill with large diameter bars or rods leading to further grills with ever decreasing hole sizes and ever decreasing bar or rod diameters until the arrangement finishes with a fine mesh of the smallest holes of the arrangement.
- 2 A large holed grill according to claim 1, in which the arrangement of grills and mesh will be mirrored in the pipeline to cope with flames travelling in either direction.
