Description

Title: Apparatus for Laying Bitumen Joint The present invention relates to an apparatus for laying a bitumen joint.
When refurbishing a roadway having two or more lanes, it is common practice to take off a top layer of asphalt one lane first. Before replacing the top layer, the edge of the lane adjacent another lane is coated with hot applied bitumen so that a good seal is made between the top layers of asphalt. The top layer on the one lane is then replaced. The coating of the edge with bitumen is often done by having a heated cauldron of bitumen on a vehicle and decanting hot bitumen form the cauldron into watering cans and manually pouring the hot bitumen along the edge. This is a slow labour intensive process and the manual handling of hot bitumen can be dangerous. Also this is often done adjacent a roadway lane on which vehicles are driving at speed which can be hazardous for persons involved.
The invention seeks to provide a solution to this problem.
According to the present invention there is provided an apparatus for laying a bitumen joint comprising: a) a housing supported for movement on at least two wheels, b) a cauldron for heating bitumen in the housing, c) a heater for heating the bitumen, d) a bitumen delivery nozzle with a flow control valve connected to the bottom of the cauldron, and e) positioning means to support the nozzle relative to the housing in variable positions, in use the apparatus being moveable along a roadway and said nozzle being used to deliver hot bitumen at variable flow rates and positions relative to the housing onto the roadway.
Preferably the heater is located between the base of the housing and the cauldron. Preferably the heater is a gas heater.
Preferably a gas nozzle is provided to deliver hot gas generated by the heater onto the bitumen delivery nozzle to help melt any bitumen solidified in the delivery nozzle. The gas nozzle may be hand-held. A shield may be provided over the gas nozzle and/or bitumen delivery nozzle.
Preferably the positioning means adjusts the height of the nozzle. Preferably the positioning means includes a hydraulic ram to adjust the nozzle position.
Preferably a delivery chamber with a lid is provided to store solid bitumen above the cauldron, and a removable hatch is provided in an aperture connecting the chamber to the cauldron.
Preferably an exhaust pipe extends from the cauldron through the housing to exhaust pressure and heat in the cauldron.
Preferably a safety rail is provided around the housing. The rails may include a removable section to allow access to the delivery chamber.
Preferably the housing is on four wheels.
Preferably the housing includes a connector to engage with the arms of a truck / loader.
Preferably the nozzle is one of two nozzle, one nozzle is straight and the other is bent.
Preferably a container is provided to receive bitumen from said nozzle, said container having a lower face with an elongate recess to deliver a line of bitumen to provide an overbanding to a bitumen seal between lanes on a roadway.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 shows a perspective view of an apparatus and a loader, Figure 2A shows a schematic side view of the apparatus in use on a roadway with a straight nozzle, and Figure 2B shows a schematic side view of the apparatus in use on a roadway with a bent nozzle.
Figure 3 shows a container for carrying out overbanding.
Referring to Figure 1 there is shown an apparatus I for laying a bitumen joint.
Apparatus 1 has metal a housing 2 supported for movement on four wheels 3A,3B,3C,3D wheels (3D not visible).
Inside housing 2 is a cauldron 4 heated by heater in the form of a gas impact burner 5. Burner 5 is located below the cauldron 4 and the base of the housing 2. Cauldron 4 is adapted to heat bitumen. Gas burner 5 is supplied gas from a bottle 6.
Cauldron 4 has a delivery chamber 7 with a lid 8 with handle 8A. Chamber 7 is provided to store solid bitumen above the cauldron. A removable sliding hatch 9 with handle 9A is provided in an aperture connecting the chamber 7 to the cauldron 4. In order to load a block of bitumen into the cauldron 4, the lid 8 is opened and the block placed in chamber 7, and the lid 8 then closed. Hatch 9 can then be opened allowing the block of bitumen to fall into the cauldron 4. This allows bitumen to be loaded into the chamber without molten bitumen splashing up into the face of the user.
The bottom of cauldron 4 has a exit port 10 leading through the wall of the housing to a flow control valve II and a delivery nozzle 12 at the end of a flexible tube 13. Control valve Ii is operated by a hydraulic ram 14.
A positioning means in the form of a hydraulic ram 15 supports the nozzle relative to the housing in variable positions by adjusting its height by flexing the tube 13 as the ram length is shortened or lengthened.
A hand-held gas nozzle 16 is provided at the end of a pipe 17 to deliver hot gas generated by the burner 5 onto the bitumen control valve ii and delivery nozzle 12 to help melt any bitumen solidified in the delivery nozzle. A shield (not shown) may be provided over the gas nozzle 16 and/or bitumen control valve 11 and delivery nozzle 12.
An exhaust pipe 18 extends from the cauldron 4 through the housing 2 to exhaust pressure and heat in the cauldron.
A safety rail 19 is provided around the housing 2. The rails may include a removable section to allow access to the delivery chamber 7.
Housing 2 engages with a quick release coupling 31 at the end of the arms of a loader 30 which supplies the hydraulics to control the rams 14 and 15. Loader 30 can carry the gas bottle 6 at the rear of the loader, keeping the gas away from heat.
In use the apparatus 1 is moveable along a roadway using loader 30, and the nozzle 12 is used to deliver hot bitumen at variable flow rates and positions relative to the housing onto the roadway as shown below in Figures 2A and 2B.
Referring to Figures 2A and 2B there is shown a roadway "W" with two lanes "X" and "Y".
A top layer of asphalt has been taken off lane "X" so it is lower than lane "Y". Before replacing the top layer of asphalt, the edge "Z" of the lane "Y" is coated with bitumen so that a good seal / bond is made between the top layers of asphalt. The top layer on the lane "X" can then be replaced. As shown in Figure 2A, apparatus 1 is shown on the lane "X", and nozzle 12 is shown as being straight to direct bitumen onto the edge "Z". As shown in Figure 2B, apparatus 1 is shown on the lane "Y", and nozzle 12 is shown as being curved to direct bitumen onto the edge "Z". It is thus envisaged that an apparatus I would have two interchangeable nozzles, and one nozzle is straight and the other is bent.
Referring now to Figure 3, it may be desirable to provide an overbanding "A" to a bitumen seal between lanes on a roadway. A open topped container 20 may be provided for this purpose having a lower face with an elongate recess 21 to deliver a line of bitumen to the roadway.
Bitumen from nozzle 12 is delivered into the container which is secured by an arm (not shown) to the housing 2 and the over banding line of bitumen "A" is laid through recess 21.
The invention may take a form different to that specifically described above.
Further modifications will be apparent to those skilled in the art without departing from the scope of the present invention. a
