Description

A Seal
Field of the Invention
The invention relates to seals, more particularly to seals for doors and door frames.
Background of the Invention
Door seals are fitted for a number of purposes. For example, they may function as acoustic seals, fire seals or weather seals. Seals may be perimeter seals fitted to the door frame or threshold seals which are generally fitted to the bottom of a door. Threshold hold seals generally co-operate with threshold plates when the door is closed.
Threshold and perimeter seals which are held in place by a carrier are known, however existing seal and carrier arrangements are unsatisfactory since the seals tend to move around in the carrier as the door is moved and do not provide a tight seal when the door is closed.
It would be desirable to provide an improved seal and carrier arrangement.
Summary of the Invention
One aspect of the invention provides an elongate seal and carrier assembly for mounting on a door or frame, comprising: a sealing element, the sealing element comprising a mounting part, a sealing part and a spine joining the sealing part to the mounting part; and a carrier, the carrier having a front side and a rear side, the rear side being attachable to a door or frame; wherein the mounting part of the sealing element is shaped to co-operate with a recess on the rear side of the carrier, and wherein the seal and carrier assembly is configured such that when the sealing element is mounted in the carrier the rear face of the spine extends beyond the rear side of the carrier.
Preferably the rear face of the spine extends beyond the rear side of the carrier by at least 0.1mm.
More preferably the rear face of the spine extends beyond the rear side of the carrier by an amount in the range 0.1-0.3mm. This overlap ensures that in use the sealing element is securely clamped to the
I
A-
door or door frame and ensures that the sealing element does not move around in the carrier when the door is opened and closed.
In one embodiment of the invention the seal and carrier assembly is used as a threshold seal. In this embodiment the mounting part of the sealing element is preferably fabricated from a rigid material and the sealing part is preferably fabricated from a flexible material. A threshold seal is located at the bottom of a door and the sealing part of the sealing element is brushed backwards and forwards across a threshold plate as the door is opened and closed. It is therefore advantageous that the projections are suitably flexible and hard wearing. Preferably the sealing part of the sealing element of the threshold sealing element is fabricated from a material with a deflection recovery value of at least 40% (tested according to BS EN 12365-3:2003). A deflection recovery value is a measure of how well the material returns to its original shape after compression; the greater the value, the greater the flexibility of the material.
Preferably the sealing part of a threshold seal comprises a substantially horizontal projection, with at least two flexible projections extending downwardly therefrom. When the door is closed these flexible projections typically co-operate with a threshold plate secured across the door threshold. Air pockets are formed between the sealing element and the threshold plate which act as an acoustic insulator.
In another embodiment of the invention the seal and carrier assembly is used as a perimeter seal. In this embodiment the sealing element is preferably fabricated from a flexible material. An example of a suitable material is silicone. Preferably the sealing part has a substantially circular cross-section with at least two flexible projections extending therefrom. When a door is closed onto the seal and carrier assembly these flexible projections create air pockets between the frame and the door, providing an acoustic seal.
The carrier is used to secure the sealing element to the door or door frame. The carrier is typically fabricated from metal, for example aluminium. Preferably the carrier includes means for securing the seal and carrier assembly to the door or door frame. Such means may include pre-drilled holes in the rear side of the carrier suitable for inserting screws through the rear side of the carrier and into the door or door frame. The carrier may also be provided with a cover which may be introduced after installation in order to hide any fixings such as screw-heads.
The invention provides an improved seal and carrier assembly for installation on a door or door frame, providing an improved acoustic seal. The improved arrangement of the seal and carrier ensures a tight fit of the seal against the door or frame.
Brief Description of the Drawings
Tn the drawings, which illustrate preferred embodiments of the invention: Figure 1 is an end on view of a seal according to a first embodiment of the invention; Figure 2 is a perspective view of the seal of Figure 1; Figure 3 is an end on view of a carrier; Figure 4 is an end on view of the seal of Figure tin conjunction with the carrier of Figure 3; Figure 5 is an end on view of a seal according to a second embodiment of the invention; Figure 6 is a perspective view of the seal of Figure 5; Figure 7 is an end on view of the seal of Figure 5 in conjunction with the carrier of Figure 3; and Figure 8 is a perspective view of the seal and carrier arrangement of Figure 7.
Detailed Description of the Preferred Embodiments
Figures 1 and 2 illustrate a sealing element 1 according to a first embodiment of the invention. The sealing element 1 comprises a mounting part 2, a sealing part 3 and a spine 8 which joins the mounting part to the sealing part. The mounting part 2 is shaped so that it locates in a corresponding recess 5 in a carrier 4 as illustrated in Figures 3 and 4. The carrier 4 is used to mount the seal onto a door or door frame. This particular seal and carrier arrangement is used as a perimeter seal and is usually mounted onto a door frame using screws inserted through the carrier 4.
A cover 6 may then be inserted into a groove 10 on the carrier 4, shown more clearly in Figure 8.
The cover 6 may be used in order to hide any fixings used to attach the carrier 4 to a door frame.
The carrier 4 is typically fabricated from aluminium.
In this embodiment of the invention the sealing element is preferably fabricated from a flexible material such as silicone. The spine 8 has a front face 30 which cooperates with the carrier 4 and a rear face 31 which abuts the door or door frame to which the seal/carrier assembly is attached.
The dimensions of the sealing element 1 are such that when viewed in cross-section the rear face 31 of the spine 8 extends beyond the rear edge 9 of the carrier 4 by a distance labeled X on Figure 4.
Preferably the rear face 31 of the spine 8 extends beyond the rear edge 9 of carrier by at least 0.1mm.
Preferably the overlap is between 0.1mm and 0.3mm. This overlap is essential. In use, the spine 8 of the sealing element 1 is compressed onto a door frame by the carrier 4 giving a tight seal. The compression of the spine 8 against a door frame also ensures that the sealing element 1 is securely clamped to the door frame by the carrier 4 and does not move around in the carrier when the door is opened and closed.
As shown in Figures 1, 2 and 4, the sealing part 3 of this embodiment of the invention has a substantially spherical cross section with projections or fingers 7 extending therefrom. When a door is closed onto the seal/carrier assembly these fingers 7 form air pockets between the frame and the door, providing an improved acoustic seal.
As the spine 8 of the sealing element 1 is compressed against a door frame by the carrier 4, the top surface 21 of the sealing part 3 is also pushed up against the base of the carrier 4, this also provides a tight seal between a door frame and the sealing element 1.
Figures 5 and 6 illustrate a sealing element 11 according to a second embodiment of the invention.
The sealing element Li comprises a mounting part 12 and a sealing part 13 and a spine 18 which joins the mounting part 12 to the sealing part 13. The mounting part 12 is shaped so that it locates in a corresponding recess 5 in a carrier 4 as illustrated in Figures 7 and 8. The carrier 4 enables the seal to be mounted onto a door or door frame. This seal/carrier arrangement is typically used as a threshold seal and is usually mounted along the bottom edge of a door using screws 22 inserted through the carrier. As illustrated in Figure 8, a cover 6 may then be inserted into a groove on the carrier in order to hide any fixings used to attach the carrier to the door. The carrier 4 is typically fabricated from aluminium.
The mounting part 12 and the spine 18 of the sealing element 11 are fabricated from a rigid material, such as PVC. The sealing part 13 of the sealing element 11 is fabricated from a hard wearing, relatively flexible material. Preferably the sealing part 13 of the sealing element 11 is fabricated from a flexible elastomeric material with a deflection recovery value of at least 40% (tested according to BS EN 12365-3:2003). Tn this embodiment of the invention the sealing part 13 comprises a substantially rigid, substantially horizontal projection 20, with three relatively flexible projections or fmgers 17 extending downwardly therefrom. When the door is closed these fingers 17 co-operate with a threshold plate (not shown), forming air pockets between the threshold plate and the door, which act as an acoustic insulator. As the door is opened and closed the fingers 17 brush across the threshold plate. It is important that the fingers 17 are flexible enough to allow the door to be opened and closed easily, whilst still being hardwearing.
The spine 18 has a front face 40 which cooperates with the carrier 4 and a rear face 41 which abuts the door or door frame to which the seal/carrier assembly is attached.
The dimensions of the sealing element 11 are such that when viewed in cross-section the rear face 41 of the spine 18 extends beyond the rear edge 9 of the carrier 4 by a distance labeled Y on Figure 7.
Preferably the rear face 41 of the spine 8 extends beyond the rear edge 9 of carrier by at least 0.1mm.
Preferably the overlap is between 0.1mm and 0.3mm. This overlap is essential. In use, the spine 18 of the sealing element 11 is clamped onto a door frame by the carrier 4 giving a tight seal. This overlap of the spine 18 against a door frame also ensures that the sealing element 11 is securely clamped to the door frame by the carrier 4 and does not move around in the carrier when the door is opened and closed.
The seal and carrier assembly of the invention provides an improved acoustic door seal, with an improved arrangement that ensures that the seal is firmly mounted within the carrier.
