Abstract
An oil filter for an automatic transmission comprises a cylindrical metal mesh 5, sealed at an end of an oil admission tube 1 and a free end of the cylindrical metal mesh is provided with a pilot element 8 centering the metal mesh into a rib 10 of a case 2 of an automatic transmission. Preferably the free end is crimped and welded with a plate 7, the pilot element being fixed on the plate. The pilot element or the rib may be fitted with a chamfer 9. Advantageously the oil filter element is highly sufficient which at low costs is efficient and easy to assemble and can be packed in the very narrow space under the knees of the hypoid gear arrangement. Due to the pilot element, it is self-centering and does not need to be assembled with a bolt.
Description
DESCRIPTION
Oil filter for an automatic transmission The invention concerns an oil filter for an automatic transmission.
In automatic transmissions, there is often very little space for oil filters, e.g. in the very narrow space under the knees of a hypoid gear arrangement. However, the oil filter must combine filtering efficiency and a sufficient flow rate. Known oil filters for this use are metal seeves integrated into the oil lines which are difficult to assemble and to replace.
Conventional suction screens also need a lot of package space and are not very easy to assemble.
The objective of the invention is therefore to provide an oil filter for an automatic transmission which at low costs is efficient and easy to assemble.
This objective is achieved in that a cylindrical metal mesh is sealed at the end of the oil admission tube and that the free end of the cylindrical metal mesh is provided with a pilot element centering the metal mesh into a rib of the case of the automatic transmission.
The described oil filter element is highly sufficient and can be packed in the very narrow space under the knees of the hypoid gear arrangement. Due to the pilot element, it is self-centering and does not need to be assembled with a bolt.
According to the invention, the metal mesh has 14 to 22 meshes per inch, preferably 16 to 20 meshes per inch.
In a preferrred embodiment of the invention, the free end of the metal mesh is crimped and welded with a plate, the pilot being fixed on the plate.
A further development of the invention consists in the fact that the pilot is provided with a chamfer.
The chamfer facilitates the entry of the pilot into the rib of the case.
A further embodiment of the invention consists in the fact that the rib of the case is provided with a chamfer.
The chamfer of the rib also facilitates the entry of the pilot. In combination, both the chamfers of the pilot and the rib of the case assure easy assembly of the oil filter according to the present invention.
In the following, the invention is explained in detail with reference to the drawings in which FIGURE la shows a view in perspective of the oil filter arrangement according to the present invention (rear view), FIGURE lb shows the front view corresponding to FIGURE 1, FIGURE 2 shows a schematic side view of the oil filter arrangement according to the present invention.
As represented in FIGURES la, and lb, the oil filter arrangement according to the present invention comprises an oil admission tube 1 which is fixed to the case 2 by a block fitting 3 and a bolt 4.
At the end of the oil admission tube 1, a cylindrical metal mesh 5 is fixed and sealed. This cylindrical metal mesh 5 is the oil filter element. Its free end is situated in a cavity 6 so that the oil can leave the metal mesh 5 in order to enter into the cavity 6.
The free end of the metal mesh 5 is crimped and welded with a metal plate 7 and a pilot element 8 is fixed with a protrusion on the metal plate. This pilot element 8situated on the free front side of the metal mesh 5 is in form of a cylindrical shaft with a chamfer 9 on its end. it is designed to enter into a rib 10 of the case 2. In order to facilitate further the entry of the cylindrical shaft of the pilot element 8 into the rib 10, the rib 10 is also provided with a chamfer 11. Due to the combination of the two chamfers of the pilot element 8 and of the rib 10, the assembly of the filter arrangement is largely facilitated. Once the mesh 5 is fixed and sealed on the oil admission tube 1, the pilot element 8 can be pushed towards the rib 10 of the case and its cylindrical shaft enters the rib 10 thereby centering the oil filter arrangement. Finally, the oil admission tube 1 is fixed to the case 2 by the block fitting 3 and the bolt 4. )
