Abstract

Compositions comprising a three-dimensional matrix comprising collagen fibrils with specific characteristics, including, but not limited to, a specific fibril area fraction (i.e., density) and/or a specific elastic or linear modulus (i.e., stiffness). The invention also relates to methods of preparation and use of the matrices. Also claimed is a kit for preparing collagen matrices comprising a vessel comprising purified collagen or solubilized extracellular matrix components, an acid solution and a neutralizing solution and a method of preparing matrices comprising polymerizing purified collagen or solubilized extracellular matrix components into fibrils by varying the polymerization conditions.
