Abstract
A switch back box 1 with terminal connectors 3 for termination of cables and enables wiring of a light wherein only a single cable 4 goes to the light fixture. In the illustrated embodiment an upstream power cable enters the junction box and is terminated at connectors 3, a downstream power cable connected at terminal block 3 exits the junction box, and a single switched cable connected to the terminal strip 3 goes to a lighting fixture.
Description
JUNCTION BACK BOX
This invention relates to junction back boxes instead of conventional back boxes for electrical installation.
For electrical installations it is necessary to fit termination units especially for lighting circuits. These units are called junction boxes. The problem with junction boxes is as stated in the BS7671 lEE wiring regulations all junction boxes must be accessible for inspection and testing purposes. Unfortunately this is almost impossible as most junction boxes are fitted under floorboards or in roof spaces, making it difficult to correctly test, inspect or find a fault on the circuit.
This invention will not only make all cable joints accessible, it also enables the technician to access the joints without the use of ladders.
Conventional lighting circuits are based on a loop in loop out system with a switch wire going from each light position to a local switch, therefore there is always three cables at each lighting point comprising of nine individual conductors 2. If you wish to fit a decorative luminary or modem down lights one would have to terminate all nine conductors into ajunction box. The problem with this is as I have already mentioned, the termination point is no longer accessible for inspection /testing purposes.
My invention is based on the same principles as a conventional lighting circuit but instead of looping in and out at each light point we would now ioop in and out of each switch position. With the feed cable ONLY going to the light point. The benefits of doing this are we can now access every termination / junction point in the circuit at each switch position, there would only be one cable going to the light point 4, making it easier to fit as previously mentioned decorative luminaries or modem down lights. Also thIs will ensure the use of less cable which would be more environmentally friendly.
An example of the invention now will be described by referring to accompanying drawings.
Figure 1: shows a conventional switch back box 1.
Figure 2: shows a typical situation in a lighting circuit with three cables 2 and nine conductors 5, to connect a standard light fitting.
Figure 3: shows the junction back box 1 with terminals added to the bottom 3. This will mean the junction box can now be easily accessed, so the cables can be inspected., tested and also terminated safely.
Figure 4: shows a single cable 4 and three conductors 6 only at the light position making it easier and safer to fit decorative light fittings or modern down lights.
Claims (5)
- CLAIMSJunction back box 1. A switch back box with terminals, which would mean only 1 cable going to the lighting position, making it safer and easier to install decorative luminaries or modem down lights.
- 2. A switch back box according to claim 1, that enables future inspection and testing by an electrician to be carried out without the use of ladders.
- 3. A switch back boxes according to claim 1, which eradicates the use of inaccessible junction boxes.
- 4. A switch back box according to claim 1, that if used would reduce the amount of cables needed for a lighting circuit therefore making the circuit more environmentally friendly.
- 5. A switch back box according to claim 1 with terminals so that cables can be easily and safely terminated.
