Abstract
A heating and cooling blanket for a bed comprises a matrix of small diameter flexible tubes `k' embedded within a blanket `j' through which a heated or cooled fluid is circulated. The fluid may be heated or cooled by passing it through a metal block `f in thermal communication with a thermoelectric heat pump `e', such as a Peltier heat pump. Preferably, one side of the heat pump is attached to the metal block whilst the other side of the heat pump is connected to a heat sink 'g'. A fan `h' may be used to provide forced air cooling of the heat sink. Preferably, a voltage polarity change over switch `d' is activated to switch the heat pump between heating and cooling, where a time delay may be applied before the polarity change over occurs. The fluid may be circulated around the blanket by a pump `i' and the temperature may be controlled by a thermostat 'c'. The heat and cooling blanket arrangement is preferably powered by a low voltage power supply `a' which enables the blanket to be safely used whilst occupied, without risk of electrocution or fire. In use, the blanket not only provides a warm bed in the winter months but can also provide a cool bed during the summer months.
Description
ELECTRICALLY OPERATED WARM AND COOL BLANKET
BACKGROUND
This invention relates to ensuring a sleeping bed temperature remains comfortable regardless of climatic conditions.
STATEMENT OF INVENTION
Electric blankets have been available for many years and are used in the winter months to provide a warm bed.
This invention not only provides a warm bed in the winter months but can also provide a cool bed during hot summer months, in fact this invention can be programmed to provide the perfect sleeping temperature to suite an individuals requirements.
ADVANTAGES
Can be programmed to provide a warm bed in winter.
Can be programmed to provide a cool bed in summer.
Can be programmed to provide a pre-set temperature regardless of the ambient air temperature.
The unit can be used whilst the occupant is sleeping with no risk of electric shock.
The unit can be used whilst the occupant is sleeping with no risk of fire.
Very low consumption of power in relation to air conditioning.
Very low consumption of power in relation to central heating.
Very low running costs in relation to air conditioning Very low running costs in relation to central heating.
Environmentally friendly in relation to air conditioning or central heating.
Does not dry the air unlike refrigerant air conditioning.
Does not increase humidity unlike evaporation air conditioning.
Daily timer can be fitted to switch the unit on and off automatically at set times.
The heating and cooling of the blanket is performed by pumping a non toxic liquid around a matrix of small bore flexible tubes (k) which are embedded within the blanket (j). The ends of the small bore tubes are connected to larger flexible tubes (m) which enter the main control box where the heating and cooling process is carried out.
One side of the thermal heat pump (e) is attached to the Hot/Cold fluid metallic collection block (t) with a heat sink (g) connected to the other side of the thermal heat pump. A cooling fan (h) is used to cool the heatsink preventing overheating of the heat pump occurring.
When the unit is switched on and the ambient air temperature is above the level set by the thermostat (C) then voltage is applied to the heat pump with normal polarity, this causes cooling on one side of the thermal heat pump (Pettier effect) and thus cools the collection block (f). Fluid is pumped through the collection block (f) using pump (e) which cools as it passes through. The resulting cooled liquid is then passed through the matrix of small bore tubes within the blanket and causes a significant drop in temperature within the blanket.
The coolant is recirculated and the process is carried on until the desired temperature is reached as set by thermostat (c) which switches power off from the thermal heat pump until the temperature of the fluid rises above the thermostat set level this process is maintained resulting in comfortable sleeping conditions in hot weather.
Should the ambient air temperature drop or the thermostat is set to a higher temperature level, then after a time delay of approximately one minute the voltage polarity change over switch (d) is activated which causes the cold side of the thermal heat pump turn hot resulting in warm liquid passing through the blanket.
The entire system voltage will be operated by a safe low voltage power supply (a) which enables the blanket to be used whilst occupied without any risk of electrocution or fire.
A daily timer (not included on drawing) may also be included which will allow the unit to automatically switch on and off at pre-set bed and rise times.
