Abstract

A thermal floor insulation support sheet manufactured using a plastic sheet material is attached by staples to the upper surface of timber floor joists 8. The sheet is formed into a channel like shape 6 so that in use it provides a space between a lower inside base of the sheet and the upper surface of the joists, thus providing a housing for block thermal insulation 7. The plastic sheet material may be Polypropylene of Polyethylene. The plastic sheets may have a series of slits 5 (fig. 1) which allow the sheet to be formed into the channel like shape 6. The sheet allows block thermal insulation of a specified size to be fitted before the timber floor members are secure in position to the timber joists of a floor area.

Description

Improvements relating to supports for floor insulation within floor Joists
Field of invention
By present conventional methods Thermal Insulation, (and for this description only will be that of block form insulation), commercially available in sizes:- 120m.iflemetres x 1.2 metres in length. The width will be cut to a specified size and will correspond to the inner width dimension between the Joists, which will vary and be pre-determined by the centre distance of the said Joists.
Although adequate the present method predominantly used, is that of open weave like Plastic net material having square holes (and for this description only the square holes will be 75millemetres.) The net-like material is commercially available in roll form.
The usual method of attaching the net-like material to the timber floor Joists, is by Stapling' the said net to the underside of each pair ofjoists, ensuring the net is sufficiently Taut to support the insulation block when fitted in position between the said joists.
The present method herein before described is sufficient to support the said insulation, however the stapling in position of the net can be both difficult and time consuming.
A further important point, is that the said operation is detrimental to the effectiveness of the thermal insulation, by reason that the volume of space between the top of the insulation block and the top surface of the joists will be at least 8Omillemetres,(This is based on a joist depth of 200millemetres), the gap of 8Omillemetres will increase on larger depth of joists.
The invention seeks to improve upon these disadvantages.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION.
A plastic sheet and for this description the material is that of either Polypropylene or that of Polyethylene, supplied in a specified material thickness and width, commercially available in a length size of 1.2metres. The said plastic sheets are then processed to produce the completed component member.
One such method of processing will now be briefly described, but is a separate operation, and the mechanics of the process is not considered to be the invention.
The plastic sheets will be passed through four pairs of steel rollers, two sets will be for the Right hand side of the sheet, and the other two pairs that of the Left hand side.
The rollers will be arranged one above the other, and retained under compression one to the other. One of the rollers (in each pair), will have a series of casselations' equally spaced around the circumference, and will be arranged to act as cutting edges, as each plastic sheet is fed through each pair of rollers. This will produce Slits/Cuts within each sheet, at specified dimensions and pre-determined by the spacing and slitting size of the cutting member.
The aforesaid operation will allow each sheet to have an upper fold, which will be at degrees to the formed vertical sides as shown in Fig. 2, also the slits at the base level allows the sheet to be formed into a channel like section. The ease to which the upper and lower fold can be achieved is greatly increased by the slits/cuts acting as longitudinal hinges over the entire section length.
The invention by way of the following description and accompanying drawings will now be described in greater detail.
Fig. I Plan view.
Fig. 2 Perspective view of finished section.
Fig. 3 Sectional view.
Item 4 fig 1 shows a plan view of the plastic sheet member, having dimensions represented by the letters A' and CL', having a sheet thickness of 1.5 millimetres.
Slits/Cuts item's 5 have been made within the sheet as herein before described within the summary. These slits are to specified sizes and dimensions and allow hinging of the sheet to form a channel -like section as shown in fig.2, having a formed top portion of a dimension represented by the letter X'. The sizes for this description only are as follows:-W' will be of a dimension that will be compatible with the inner dimension between each pair of Joists, and will vary dependant on the joist centres.
Dimension L' will be that of 1.2 metres as presently supplied in the pre-cut sheet form, dimension X' will be 50 millimetres.
The formed channel section item 6 fig. 2 will have a depth represented by the dimension D' and for this description will be 120 millimetres, which will be the same dimension of the supplied Thermal block insulation item 7 fig. 3.
The channel section item 6 fig's 2 and 3 can now be fitted between the timber floor joists item's 8 as shown in fig.3, and stapled into position to the upper surface edge of the timber joists item's 8 fig. 3.
The operation of stapling the said channel section members item's 6 fig's 2 and 3 to the said joists, are positioned by abutment of one section to the other over the entire longitudinal length of each pair of joists within the floor area.
It can now be clearly noted and observed that the top surface of the block insulation is virtually level with the top surface of each timber joist, providing maximum insulation of volumetric space to the under side of the flooring (Not shown). p
