Abstract
A marine cover 10 adapted to be fitted around a tyre wherein the cover includes securing means 12 to enable the tyre to be fastened to a marine support, such as the side of a marine vessel. The cover may be made from an elasticized polyester fabric or a durable marine grade polyester material which may be weather proof and suitable for use in a marine environment. The marine cover may also have one or more fastening means 22 for securing the cover around the tyre. The securing means may comprise a reinforced cuff attached to at least one end of the marine cover and having eyelets 14 therein.
Description
Boat Fender Cover The present invention relates to a cover for fenders for marine vessels, particularly fenders comprising scrap tyres.
Scrap or used tyres are often re-employed as fenders or bumper guards on many types of marine vessel mooring structures such as docks or marinas to prevent damage to boats when moored. However, although ideally suited as boat fenders, scrap tyres can create black unsightly scuff marks on surfaces, and with their overall unattractive appearance, they are unlikely candidates for use as boat fenders on marine vessels themselves.
An object of this invention is to provide a cover adapted to fit a tyre, which overcomes the problems described above.
Accordingly, in a first aspect of the present invention, there is provided a marine cover adapted to be fitted around a tyre wherein the cover includes securing means to enable the tyre to be fastened to a marine support, such as the side of a marine vessel.
The tyre may be any type of suitable tyre, including scrap or used tyres, preferably a vehicle tyre.
Preferably, the marine cover is made from a flexible fabric, optionally also being at least partly elastic. In one embodiment, the cover is made from an elasticized polyester fabric.
The fabric may be weather-proof suitable for use in a marine environment.
The fabric may be resistant to water, UV light, fade, salt corrosion, mould, mildew, scuffing, fender squeak or a combination thereof.
In one embodiment the marine cover is made from a durable marine grade polyester material, such as a polymide.
One advantage of the present invention is that the cover protects the tyre from UV rays which may soften the rubber of the tyre or cause the tyre to fade in colour which can often look unappealing to the eye.
Preferably the marine cover is formed from a low friction material to reduce the possibility of damage to the side of the marine vessel due to the rubbing of the tyre there against.
In one embodiment the marine cover is provided in an elasticized elongate form and is made to fit easily over and around the tyre, and to envelope the tyre such that the hole of the tyre remains open.
Preferably, in an open form or position, the cover comprises an elongate rectangle of elasticized fabric.
The marine cover may further comprise one or more fastening means for securing the cover around the tyre. The or each fastening means may be any type of suitable fastening means capable of enabling the cover to be fitted and attached securely around the tyre.
In one embodiment, fastening means such as buttons, rivets, poppers and/or one or more Velcro (RTM) strips are affixed wholly or partially to opposing edges along an elongate length of the marine cover to enable the cover to be folded, fastened and secured around a tyre to cover the whole of the tyre.
The securing means may be any type of securing means capable of enabling the tyre to be fastened to a marine support, either being fixed such as a mooring pontoon or pier, or being moveable such as the side of a marine vessel.
In one embodiment, the securing means may be a reinforced cuff affixed to at least one end of the marine cover, having one or more eyes or eyelets to enable the tyre to be fastened to the side of a vessel.
In one embodiment, the reinforced cuff comprises a reinforced polyester-type fabric which is stitched into the fabric of the marine cover.
The eyes or eyelets may be made from any suitable material, preferably a nylon or brass material.
In a further specific embodiment, the reinforced cuff includes two nylon or brass eyelets such that in use, a rope or the like can be passed through the eyelets of the cuff and attached to a line or cleat or the like on the deck of a boat to allow the cover-enclosed tyre to be suspended from the side of a boat.
Preferably the marine cover is provided with lettering or colouration.
Thus, the cover may be provided with customized colours, lettering and/or logos to provide a bespoke cover. Such lettering or logos may be incorporated onto the cover by a suitable means such as embroidery or printing. The lettering may include the name of the boat, club, harbour, manufacturer or company logo, etc, to create a protective boat fender cover which is both individual and/or exclusive to that marine vessel.
This is particularly advantageous to a boat owner who may wish to display or advertise the name of his marine vessel.
The present invention is also advantageous as it is capable of converting used and often environmentally troublesome scrap tyres into cheap, useful, aesthetically pleasing and environmentally friendly boat fenders, providing protection for marine vessels against damage from other boats and mooring structures or from other fenders themselves, though impact or through rubbing or abrasion.
In addition, if staining occurs, the cover can be easily removed and washed.
The cover can be manufactured inexpensively and packaged in a flat pack form to be sold in a simple transparent packaging.
The marine vessel can be any type of marine vessel particularly but not exclusively, houseboats, narrow boats, riverboats, fishing boats and leisure crafts.
An embodiment of the present invention will now be described by way of example only, and with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 shows a perspective view of a marine cover of one embodiment of the present invention, in a closed position; Figure 2 shows a perspective view of a marine cover of Figure 1 in an open position, and a scrap tyre; and Figure 3 shows the marine cover of Figure 2 fitted around the scrap tyre of Figure 2 suspended from the side of a boat.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 shows a marine cover 10 having a securing means comprising a cuff 12 which has been affixed by reinforced stitching to the top end of the cover 10. The cuff 12 has two diametrically opposed brass eyelets 14, each having a central aperture 16 for receiving a rope.
Figure 2 shows a scrap lyre 18 and the marine cover 10 in an open position wherein each opposing edge 20 of the cover 10 has a Velcro (ATM) strip 22 attached along its length.
In use, the marine cover 10 is fitted around the lyre 18 and firmly secured by attaching together the Velcro (ATM) strips 22 on each opposing edge of the cover 10. The eyelets 14 of the cuff 12 are aligned together such that a rope can be passed through the central apertures 16 and attached to a line, cleat or the like on the deck of the vessel such that the cover-enclosed tyre can be suspended from the side of a boat to provide an aesthetically-pleasing, bespoke, boat fender.
Figure 3 shows the cover-enclosed tyre 24 suspended from the side of a boat 26 by a rope 28 which has been attached to the marine cover 10 via the eyelets 14 of the cuff 12 of the cover 10. The marine cover 10 displays the name of the boat "Merlin" which has been embroidered onto the polyester fabric.
Thus, the present invention provides a simple and inexpensive marine cover for covering scrap or used tyres to provide an environmentally, attractive and bespoke boat fender for use on marine vessels and docks etc.
