Abstract

A weeding tool comprises a shaft having a weeding implement at a distal end thereof and a support leg hinged to the shaft. The leg may be attached to the lower half of the shaft and the leg may terminate in a flat plate. The weeding implement may be a fork with four tines or a blade for weed removal. The implement maybe attached to the shaft by means of quick release tension clasps or the implement may sit in the shaft by means of a male-female socket. The weeding tool is rotateable about a pivot point or fulcrum.

Description

The Fulcrum Weeder
Description i/I
The Fulcrum Weeder is a gardening tool which enables plants and weeds to be lifted from the soil with ease, the fulcrum principle being employed to transfer the strain of lifting from the user tO the tool's hinged leg.
The inventor devised the Weeder after undergoing two hip replacement operations, and being advised by his surgeon that he should not do any digging in the future He made a prototype consisting of a single iron bar ending in a flattened-out point and he adapted a garden fork, both tools enabling him to dig up weeds without imposing any strain on his hips or back, in which he has advanced osteoarthritis.
The Fulcrum Weeder in its refined form, and which is the subject of this application, will give the user the choice of fitting either a lady's-style gardening fork to the shaft, or a single flattened prong, these working heads being secured by a simple quick-release tension clasp.
The free-swinging leg is held between two lugs welded to the shaft, and to prevent it sinking into the soil when pressure is applied, it is fitted with a flat plate to act as a foot.
In operation, the tool is placed so that when pressed into the ground, the tip of the working head wilt raise the weed and its root.
When it is sunk to the appropriate depth, the leg is positioned so as to create maximum leverage when downward pressure is applied to the tool's handle.
As the handle goes down, so the tip comes up -and with it the weed.
It will be noted that no lifting is involved, except when it comes to picking up the weed. (For users with serious back problems, this can be done with a Helping Hand).
