Abstract

Vibrations of buildings and structures, deadening.-A building or structure k is protected from vibrations proceeding from a source i by a screen-wall embedded in the ground independently of the structure. The wall is formed of outer and inner facings f, g preferably of reinforced concrete and an intermediate layer h of vibration deadening material such as blocks or sheets of dried felt or of rubber. The facings f, g are inclined to reflect the earth waves, the double inclination of the facing g serving to reflect the waves away from the structure. The outer facing should have a natural frequency of 20 to 30 per cent above and the inner facing 20 to 30 per cent below that of the disturbing force. The intermediate layer formed of tarred felt, rubber bitumen, or the like is protected by a waterproof covering.
