Abstract

A container 10 for keeping electronic devices such as syringe drivers dry and allows a tube (42, Fig. 3) extend from the interior of the container 10 to the exterior. The container 10 keeps the devices within dry by having a constricting means 30 that radially reduces the opening 26 of the container 10 and has a sealing means 38, 39 between the constricting means 30 and tube (42, Fig. 3) that provides a watertight seal. The sealing means 38, 39 can be formed of a resilient material such as neoprene. The constricting means 30 can be a cord or string around the periphery of the container opening and is disposed within a guide 28. The guide 28 can be a continuous loop or a plurality of smaller loops around the circumference of the opening 26. Once a seal has been produced a locking means 37 disposed on the constriction means maintains the watertight seal.

Description

S
A container for keeping an article dry The present invention relates in general to a container for keeping an article and more specifically to a container for keeping an electronic device, such as a medical device, dry.
Manufacturing and use of electronic devices is increasing each year. This is particularly the case in the medical and health technical fields. However, electronic devices are sensitive to water, exposure to which can damage them, often irreparably.
For leisure devices such as, for example, mp3 players, this is an inconvenience.
However, for medical devices, such as, for example, a syringe driver, damage may not only be an inconvenience but is likely to also be potential dangerous.
There are a number of known waterproof cases, pouches and containers in which electronic devices can be kept in order to protect them from water. However, electronic medical devices, such as, for example, syringe drivers, have a tube extending from the device to the patient. Furthermore, such devices may be exposed *:* :, to water when, for example, the patient takes a shower. * * **** *.S.
Prior art patent document W02007/007046 discloses a container for protecting a S..
device from water damage. The container has a housing which is capable of being * ..
.:; repeatedly opened and hermitically sealed. The housing also has a portal through which a wire can be extend from the electronic device inside the container to the outside of the container. The housing also has a slide mechanism which clamps the housing onto the wire, thereby providing a hermetical seal around the wire. The container described in this prior art document is primarily designed for electronic leisure devices having wires extending therefrom. The clamp therefore does not provide sufficient sensitivity to provide a seal around a tube supplying vital fluid to a patient. Such a tube may be excessively clamped such that its bore diameter is reduced or blocked thereby preventing the vital fluid reaching the patient.
Furthermore, the housing described in this prior art document is relatively expensive to manufacture and relatively complicated to use for patients who are ill or health practitioners who require speed and ease of use.
It is therefore desirable for there to be a container for keeping an electronic device dry which additionally provides a watertight seal around medical tubes. Furthermore, it is also desirable for there to be a container for keeping an electronic device dry which is relatively easy to use.
According to the present invention there is provided a container for keeping an article dry, the container having an opening, constricting means, disposed proximate to the opening and operable to radially reduce the respective opening around a tube *: * extending through the respective opening, between the inside and outside of the **** * container, and sealing means, disposed proximate the opening and operable to provide S...
a watertight seal around a said tube upon operation of the constricting means. S..
S S S.
:.:; The sealing means may comprise at least one seal. Advantageously, the sealing means comprises a pair of seals disposed at least substantially in the region of the opening.
The seals are advantageously disposed such that they are opposed to each other.
The, or each, seal is advantageously formed from a resilient material. The resilient material may be neoprene.
The constricting means is adapted such that it provides sufficient force to form a watertight seal between the sealing means and the tube, without substantially constricting the tube. The constricting means preferably comprises a cord, or the like, disposed around the periphery of the respective opening. Alternatively, the constricting means may comprise a belt, or the like.
The cord, or belt, is advantageously disposed within a guide. The guide may comprise a continuous ioop around the circumference of the opening. Additionally, or alternatively, the guide may be comprise one or more loops.
The constricting means advantageously further comprises locking means operable to lock the sealing means around a said tube in a watertight sealed manner. The locking means is preferably disposed on the constricting means. * S.
The container preferably comprises a closing portion, wherein the closing portion is **. * . S..
formed from a flexible material. The container preferably further comprises an article I...
storage portion, wherein the article storage portion is formed from a rigid or semi-S..
rigid material.
At least a portion of the container is preferably transparent; such that controls and displays of the device kept inside the container are visible from the outside of the container. At least a portion of the container is capable of transferring the touch of a user on an outside surface of the container to the controls of the device kept therein.
The portion of the container capable of transferring the touch of a user on the outside surface to the controls of a device kept therein may be the same portion of the container which is transparent.
A preferred embodiment of the present invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a schematic drawing of a container in an open unsealed state according to the present invention; Figure 2 is a schematic drawing of the container of Figure 1, viewed towards the opening; Figure 3 is a schematic drawing of the container of Figure 1 in a closed state; and Figure 4 is a schematic drawing of the container of Figure iviewed towards the * ** * opening in a closed state. I... * a **.* a...
Referring to Figures 1 and 2, a container 10 comprises an article storage portion 12, in * : which a water sensitive device, such as an electronic medical device, may be kept, and an closing portion 14.
The storage portion 12 has a front wall 16 and a back wall 18. The storage portion 12 is formed from a waterproof material, which preferably also provides at least some impact protection for a device kept therein. The storage portion 12 may be formed from a single piece of flexible, or semi-rigid material, such as, for example, neoprene, folded and stitched to provide a waterproof hem 20. Alternatively, the storage portion may be formed from two or more pieces of material and stitched to form waterproof hems therebetween. It will also be appreciated that the storage portion 12 may alternatively be formed from a solid waterproof material such as, for example, a plastics material. . It will be appreciated that other forms of providing a waterproof joint, such as gluing and taping, are equally applicable within the meaning of the present invention.
The storage portion 12 has an opening 22 through which a water sensitive device can be placed therein. A transparent waterproof window 23 is formed in the front wall 16 of the storage portion 12 and is suitably disposed therein such that a user is able to view the controls and/or display screen of the water sensitive device when it is being kept in the storage portion. The window 23 may be formed from a material which allow the transference of the touch of a user such that the user is able to control the water sensitive device kept inside the container from outside of the container. * ** * S S * ** S... * S *
The closing portion 14 is formed from a waterproof flexible material which is capable S...
of being gathered. The closing portion 14 is tubular and has an inner opening 24 and
S
* an outer opening 26. The inner opening 24 is stitched to the storage portion opening 22 to form a waterproof seal therebetween. It will be appreciated that other forms of providing a waterproofjoint, such as gluing and taping, are equally applicable within the meaning of the present invention. At the outer opening 26 a hem is formed around the circumference thereof to form a continuous ioop guide 28 in which a cord 30 is threaded to extend around the opening 26 and act as constricting means. It will be appreciated that the continuous loop guide may be replaced by two or more discrete guide loops which may be suitably placed to guide the cord around the opening 26.
The cord 30 has two ends, 32 and 34 which extend out of the guide 28 through an aperture 36. Locking means in the form of a spring-loaded lock 37 may be used to lock the cord in a desired position relative to the desired size of opening 26. The closing portion 14 further comprises sealing means in the form of a pair of opposing seals 38 and 39. The seals are formed from neoprene. However, it will be appreciated that other resilient materials capable of forming a watertight seal may be equally applicable within the meaning of the present invention.
Referring also to Figures 3 and 4, a water sensitive device, in the form of an electronic medical device, is placed inside the container 10 through the openings 26, 24 and 22 and positioned in the storage portion 12. As can be seen in Figure 3, the window 23 allows a user to view and control the device control panel 40 of a water sensitive device kept in the storage portion. * **
The electronic medical device has a tube 42 extending therefrom to a patient for * * **** carrying fluid to the patient. It is important that the flow of fluid through the tube is 20 not blocked or hampered in any way as this leads to the fluid being administered at *** * the wrong dose, the wrong time or not at all.
In order to protect the medical device from water, or the like, the cord 30 is pulled by both ends, 32 and 34, whilst the lock 37 is open (de-activated). Pulling of the cord ends gathers the guide 28 and draws the seals, 37 and 38, towards each other and
I
against the tube 42. Because of the resilient nature of the seals, 38 and 39, the tube 42 is accommodated between them and a seal is thereby formed around the tube 42. Also because of the resilient nature of the seals, 38 and 39, and the linear adjustment of constriction available, by way of the cord 30 and lock 37, a watertight seal can be achieved without interfering with the integrity of the flow rate of the tube 42.
Once the seals, 38 and 39, have formed a seal the cord 30 is locked using the lock 37.
The electronic medical device, being protected by the waterproof container 10, can then be used in an environment in which it would otherwise be exposed to water, such as, for example, in the case of a patient having a shower, The container 10, according to the present invention, provides protection for water sensitive devices which is relatively inexpensive to manufacture, simple to use and provides a watertight seal around a tube, extending from the device, without interfering with the integrity of the tube. * ** * * 0 * ** S... * S *.-.
