Abstract

A compostable packaging material laminate comprises a layer comprising a natural-fibre cloth base 11 and a layer 12 comprising latex or a latex derivative. The natural-fibre cloth may be cellulose-based such as cotton or bast fibres e.g. jute, kenaf, hemp, flax, ramie, sisal or abaca. The latex or latex derivative may be natural rubber, non-vulcanized or vulcanized rubber or a synthetic rubber such as styrene-butadiene rubber, butadiene rubber, chloroprene rubber or ethylene-propylene-diene rubber. A layer comprising starch or cellulose derivative such as lactic acid derivative, polylactic acid or biopolymer derived from corn or maize may be present. Compostable adhesives may be used between layers. The packaging material may be metallised e.g. with aluminium and may comprise a printed layer. The packaging material may be in the form of a closeable, sealable or open container and may be formed by extruding and/or laminating a latex or a latex derivative to the cloth.

Description

PACKAGING MATERIALS
The present invention relates to packaging materials, in particular to compostable, biodegradable packaging materials.
According to a first aspect of the present invention, there is provided a packaging material comprising a compostable laminate comprising: i) a layer comprising a natural-fibre cloth; and ii) a layer comprising latex or a latex derivative.
According to a second aspect of the present invention, there is provided a package in the form of a closeable, sealable or open container, or bag comprising a packaging material comprising a compostable laminate comprising: i) a layer comprising a natural-fibre cloth; and ii) a layer comprising latex or a latex derivative.
According to a third aspect of the present invention, there is provided a process for manufacturing a packaging material comprising a compostable laminate comprising: i) a layer comprising a natural-fibre cloth; and ii) a layer comprising latex or a latex derivative; wherein the process comprises extruding and/or laminating latex or a latex derivative onto a natural-fibre cloth.
Suitably, the natural-fibre cloth is cellulose-based. Preferably, the natural-fibre cloth is cotton. Alternatively, the natural-fibre cloth is formed from bast fibres. Preferably, the bast fibres are obtained from at least one of the group comprising jute, kenaf, hemp, flax, ramie, sisal or abacá.
Suitably, the latex or latex derivative is a natural latex rubber, in particular a non-vulcanized rubber. Preferably, the latex derivative is natural rubber. Alternatively, the latex or latex derivative is vulcanized.
Suitably, the latex or latex derivative comprises a filler oil.
Alternatively, the latex derivative is a synthetic rubber formed by polymerisation of a monomer or a mixture of monomers. Suitably, the synthetic rubber is styrene-butadiene rubber, butadiene rubber, chloroprene rubber or ethylene-propylene-diene rubber.
Optionally, the laminate further comprises a layer comprising a starch or cellulose derivative. Preferably, the starch or cellulose derivative is a lactic acid derivative, such as polylactic acid, or a biopolymer derived from corn or maize, for example biopolymers as sold under the trade mark Mater-Bi (Novamont) and Biograde (FKuR Kunststoff GmbH). Suitably, the starch or cellulose derivative is at least partly derived from corn or maize.
Optionally, a surface of the packaging material is metallised. Preferably, the metallised surface is formed from aluminium. Suitably, the surface of the packaging material is metallised by vacuum deposition.
Optionally, the packaging material further comprises a printed film. Preferably, the printed film is formed from a compostable polymer. Preferably, the printed film and packaging material form a laminate. Alternatively, the starch or cellulose derivative comprises a printed layer.
Optionally, a compostable laminating adhesive is interposed between the natural-fibre cloth layer and the layer comprising latex or a latex derivative.
The above and other aspects of the present invention will now be described in further detail, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a schematic sectional view of a packaging material according to the first aspect of the invention.
Referring to Figure 1 there is shown a packaging material 10 formed from a natural-fibre cloth base 11 and latex or a latex derivative 12. Packaging material 10 may be formed by any suitable technique, such as by extrusion or lamination. Lamination is the preferred process. Conventional lamination techniques include applying the latex or latex derivative 12 as a film to the natural-fibre cloth base 11 using heat and/or pressure to bond the components. Optionally, an adhesive may be used to bond the cloth base 11 and latex or latex derivative, and this will also preferably be
compostable.
The latex or latex derivative may include a filler oil.
Additionally, the latex derivative 12, in the form of a film, may be metallised by vacuum deposition. A suitable metal for forming the metallised surface is aluminium.
In a container made from the packaging material according to the present invention, the metallised surface will generally cover the interior surfaces of the container to act as a barrier between an item located within the container and the starch derivative 12.
In preferred embodiments, the starch derivative is a lactic acid derivative, such as polylactic acid, or a biopolymer derived from corn or maize. Suitable biopolymers include those sold under the trade mark Mater-Bi (Novamont) and Biograde (FKuR Kunststoff GmbH).
The packaging material may also be covered with a printed film (not shown), which is preferably formed from a compostable polymer. In preferred embodiments, the printed film and packaging material form a laminate. In an alternative embodiment, the film formed from the latex derivative of the laminate can be directly printed upon.
The laminated packaging material produced in accordance with the present invention provides a versatile material which has excellent barrier properties, and which can be used in a wide variety of applications. In particular, these materials are considered to be excellent alternatives to oil-based packaging materials commonly used for food containment and preservation. Due to their excellent barrier properties, these laminate materials are suitable for use in containing liquids, and particularly suitable for forming bags such as reusable or disposable carrier bags which are biodegradable.
