Description

I
An extrusion for a window assembly and a window assembly incorporating the extrusion This invention relates to an extrusion for a window assembly and, in particular, to an extrusion for an internally glazeable window assembly, which incorporates an outwardly opening sash.
The invention also relates to an internally glazeable window assembly incorporating said extrusion.
Unpiasticized polyvinyl chloride (uPVC) or aluminium extrusions for internally glazed window assemblies, which incorporate an outwardly opening sash, are known. Such window assemblies are constructed using a number of different extrusions, such that the fixed glazing unit is accommodated in a rebate to the outer side of the extrusions. Conventionally, the extrusions have on their outer sides fixed rebates for receiving a glazing unit and on their inner sides, formations for receiving beading. Thus, the window assemblies can be internally glazed and the fixed rebate prevents the glazing unit from being removed from the outside, therefore, making the window more secure.
However, the section of the known window assembly, which accommodates the outwardly opening sash, is constructed using extrusions having a fixed rebate on their inner side, so that the extrusions can accommodate the outwardly opening sash. Thus, the side of the window assembly bridging the fixed glazing unit and the outwardly opening sash has a fixed rebate to the outside for the fixed glazing unit and a fixed rebate to the inside for the outwardly opening sash. To achieve this construction, a length of an extrusion, having a fixed rebate to one side, must be cut, reversed and butt jointed so that the fixed rebate is to the outside for the fixed glazing unit and to the inside to accommodate the outwardly opening sash. As the side with the fixed rebate has a greater width than the side having the fonnations for receiving beading, when the extrusion is reversed, a "v" shaped cut out has to be made in the side of the extrusion in order that a transom can be welded to the extrusion. This process takes time and skill and furthermore, leads to unsightly butt joints on the window assembly.
It is an object of the present invention to overcome the disadvantages of the extrusions and window assemblies hereinbefore described.
Accordingly, the invention provides an extrusion for a window assembly, said extrusion comprising an elongate member having a generally rectangular cross section, and formations on one outer surface of the elongate member, said formations engageable with cooperating formations on a detachable beading so that said detachable beading can be positioned to either or both sides of the outer surface along the length thereof.
An advantage of the extrusion according to the invention is that detachable beading can be positioned to either side of the extrusion.
Preferably, when the window assembly is internally glazeable and incorporates an outwardly opening sash, lengths of the detachable beading when engaged with the formations on the elongate member provide a rebate to the inside of the window assembly to accommodate the outwardly opening sash and a rebate to the outside of the window assembly to accommodate a fixed glazing unit.
A further advantage of the extrusion according to the invention is that lengths of detachable beading can be positioned to either side of the extrusion in order to provide a rebate. This arrangement provides an extrusion with a flexible rebate which can be formed to either side of the window assembly depending on whether the rebate is to accommodate the outwardly opening sash or the fixed glazing unit. This is an improvement on conventional extrusions having a fixed rebate which must be cut, reversed and butt jointed in order for the fixed rebate to be positioned to the inside of the window assembly to accommodate the outwardly opening sash.
According to one embodiment, the extrusion is made of unpiasticized polyvinyl chloride (uPVC).
According to an alternative embodiment, the extrusion is made of aluminium.
Both unpiasticized polyvinyl chloride (uPVC) and aluminium are suitable materials for producing an extrusion according to the invention as they can be extruded and the resulting extrusion is strong and weatherproof and thus, suitable for use in window assemblies.
The invention also provides an internally glazeable window assembly which incorporates an outwardly opening sash, said window assembly comprising a framework of extrusions forming a first section to accommodate a fixed glazing unit and a second section to accommodate the outwardly opening sash, the extrusion spanning the first and second sections, along a side of the framework, having formations on the outer surface thereof, which outer surface faces towards the centre of the framework, said formations engageable with cooperating formations on a detachable beading so that said detachable beading can be positioned to either or both sides of the outer surface along the length thereof.
The use of the extrusion according to the invention, which can accommodate detachable beading on either or both sides of the outer surface facing towards the centre of the framework, offers greater flexibility in the design of the framework compared to known extrusions, which can only accommodate the beading to one side thereof.
Preferably, lengths of the detachable beading when engaged with the formations on the extrusion spanning the first and second sections provide a rebate to the inside of the window assembly to accommodate the outwardly opening sash and a rebate to the outside of the window assembly to accommodate the fixed glazing unit.
A window assembly according to the invention can be produced quickly as the extrusion, spanning the first and second sections along a side of the framework, does not need to be cut and mechanically jointed.
Furthermore, the finished window assembly has a cleaner look compared to conventional window assemblies, since there are no unsightly butt joints.
The invention will be further illustrated by the following description of embodiments of the extrusion and window assembly, given by way of example only with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Fig. 1 is perspective view of a length of an extrusion in accordance with the invention; Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the extrusion of Fig. 1 with an alternative detachable beading attached thereto; and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a window assembly in accordance with the invention.
Referring to Fig. 1 there is illustrated, generally at 10, a length of an extrusion in accordance with the invention. The extrusion 10 comprises an elongate member 11 having a generally rectangular cross section. The elongate member 11 has formations 12, 13 and 14 on an outer surface 15 thereof. The formations 12, 13 are engageable with a cooperating formation 16 on a detachable beading 17 so that said detachable beading 17 can be positioned to either or both sides 18, 19 of the outer surface 15 along the length of the elongate member 11. The extrusion 10 is made of unpiasticized polyvinyl chloride (uPVC) in this embodiment.
Referring to Fig. 2 there is illustrated a cross-section of the extrusion 10 of Fig. 1 with a length of an alternative detachable beading attached thereto. The detachable beading 20 has formations 21 and 22 which engage with formations 13 and 14, respectively, such that the length of detachable beading 20 can be positioned along side 18 of the outer surface 15 of the extrusion 10. The detachable beading 20 can also be positioned to side 19 of the outer surface 15, and the formations 21 and 22 will engage with formations 12 and 14 on the outer surface 15.
Referring to Fig. 3 there is illustrated, generally at 30, an internally glazeable window assembly in accordance with the invention, which incorporates an outwardly opening sash (not shown). The window assembly 30 comprises a framework 31 of extrusions 32, 33, 34, 35, 36 and 37 forming a first section 38 to accommodate, in this embodiment, two fixed glazing units 39 and 40 and a second section 41 to accommodate the outwardly opening sash (not shown). Extrusions 32, 34 and 35 are transoms and extrusion 36 is a mullion.
The extrusions (33, 37) spanning the first section 38 and second section 41, along the respective sides 42 and 43 of the framework 31 are lengths of the extrusion 10 of Figs. 1 and 2. In the first section 38, extrusion 37, together with a length of detachable beading 44, provide a rebate 45 to the outside of the window assembly 30 to accommodate the fixed glazing unit 40. Similarly, a length of detachable beading (not shown) forms a similar rebate (not shown) with the extrusion 33 to the outside of the window assembly 30 to accommodate the fixed glazing unit 39. In the second section 41, extrusion 37, together with a further detachable beading 46, provide a rebate 47 to the inside of the window assembly 30 to accommodate the outwardly opening sash (not shown).
Similarly, a length of detachable beading (not shown) forms a similar rebate (not shown) with the extrusion 33 to the inside of the window assembly 30 accommodate the outwardly opening sash (not shown).
The transoms 34 and 35 have fixed rebates to the outside, and thus, the fixed glazing units 39 and 40 cannot be removed from the outside of the window assembly, making the window assembly 30 secure.
