Abstract

Universal-feed sewing-machines; work supports. - A machine, for embroidering, darning and ordinary sewing, of the kind in which a needle operates from below the work and cooperates with a bobbin thread supply above the work, is provided with a guide for the needle bar of the smallest possible diameter the upper end of which serves as a support for small articles such as glove fingers. The needle-bar 6 is driven by a lower shaft 3 on which is a cam 5 for actuating the needle thread take-up 7. A narrow cylinder 10 surrounds the needlebar and serves as a guide therefor and a work support for small articles. A larger cylinder 12 may be employed for larger articles and may be moved bv hand or automatically. When ordinary sewing is to be done a work-plate 15 carried by a detachable bracket 16 is substituted for the cylinder 12. Feed by dogs.-For ordinary sewing there is employed a feed-dog 20 carried by a lever 19 mounted at 21 on the bracket 16 and actuated by two cams 24, 25 engaging bars 22, 23 on the lever to give it a vertical and pivotal displacement respectively against the tension of a spring 28.
