Abstract

245,991. Wade, H., (Karpen & Bros., S.). April 27, 1925. Chloroform; carbon, tetrachloride.- Chlorine and methane are continuously fed to a reaction chamber maintained at elevated temperature, the higher chlorination products are separated from the resulting gases and the unattacked methane and the methyl chloride returned to the chlorinator. In the apparatus shown, chlorine and methane are fed to a mixer H, preferably in the ratio of two to one by volume, the mixture passes to a chlorinator B, and after removal of hydrochloric acid in a rubber C, the resulting gases are collected in a gasometer D. By means of a compressor E the higher chlorides, are condensed and are passed to a receiver G, while. the methane and methyl chloride are conveyed to a gasometer H. The higher chlorides are introduced into a still L in which they are freed from small quantities of methane and methyl chloride and then pass to storage M. The methylene. chloride produced may contain 15 per cent of chloroform and 5 per cent of carbon tetrachloride.
