Abstract

The syringe unit comprises a needle holder, with a needle, spring and seal assembled inside, and a plunger. The plunger has a built in seal at the top and hollow section in the inside diameter and has a vacuum created to eliminate oxygen in order to prevent it reaching the blood stream. The needle holder is taper locked to the barrel and the needle and spring is held in position with clips inside the needle holder.

Description

AUTO RETRACT SYRINGE
DESCRIPTION
This invention relates to a syringe that automatically retracts the needle when the plunger is fully pushed into the syringe barrel. When a syringe is used for injecting the medicine, the safe disposal of the syringe becomes a serious issue in terms of cross contamination, poisoning, infection and serious injury.
Syringes in everyday use pose the above mentioned problems if left unattended and not disposed of in a correct manner. To overcome the issues mentioned above the present invention can contribute significantly towards addressing the safety issue. The new invention looks and operates in the same manner as a normal hypodermic syringe, except when the new invented syringe is used, the needle automatically retracts into the barrel during the last stage of the injection procedure.
The invention is now being described in a way of examples and references to the drawings.
Page 1 -figures A, B, C, D and E show the components of the syringe.
Each component is drawn on paper at different angles for easy understanding.
Page 2-figure A shows the needle body, rubber seal and spring. The drawings are positioned in order of assembly as the arrows show.
Figure B shows the assembled components inside the needle holderD Pca Pl-°r rct Ntd)e cp oc t*Jo.rrJ' (F,c. i4.i.ç) The hollow plunger is vaccum sealed to eliminate the risk of oxygen entering the blood system. -y4 / I trz'4c'i Qv Page 4 -figures A and B show the needle holder with the needle, sea! and spring ready assembled before and after insertion into the barrel by way of a taper lock.
Page 5 -figures 1 and 2 show the plunger position before the seal is punctured and the needle retracted into the plunger. Figure 3 shows the plunger seal broken and the needle released by the spring into the plunger.
The following information describes how the syringe works.
The needle holder is pushed firmly into the top of the barrel. The needle holder is taper locked into the intended position. The plunger is pushed into the bottom end of the barrel as with standard injections. The fluid is drawn and dispensed in the same manner as a normal syringe.
During the plunger push action the seal at the top of the plunger is being punctured by the bottom end of the needle body and at the same time the clips of the needle holder are pushed outwards. This action releases the compressed spring which allows the needle to be retracted into the plunger.

Claims (4)

  1. AUTO RETRACT SYRINGECLAIM1) The syringe is made up of 3 components. The barrel, needle holder and the plunger. The needle holder remains separate from the barrel until it is pushed and taper locked into the barrel. The needle holder has a needle spring and seal assembled inside. These components are held in position by clips in the inside diameter of the holder.
  2. 2) The hollow plunger has a thin seal at the top in order to maintain the vacuum and stop fluid entering be plunger during injection.
  3. 3) According to Claim 1, the compressed spring can only be released when the top end of the plunger pushes the clips outwards.
  4. 4) According to claim 2 the seal at the top of the plunger is broken by the sharp pointed end of the needle body when the contact is made (by the pointed end).
