The third plate 3 being in its folded-out position and the first and the second plate 1, 2 being in the initial position define a second position of use for the laptop stand.
Description
Laptop Stand The present application concerns a laptop stand comprising a first plate, a second plate which is hingedly connected to the first plate and pivotable in relation to the first plate between an initial position, in which the first and second plates are essentially parallel and superimposed, and an end position, in which the first and the second plates are arranged in an angle in relation to each other, a support leg which is hingedly connected to the second plate and which in a locking position releasably locks the second plate to the first plate in an intermediate position, in which the first and the second plates are arranged in an angle of less than 90° in relation to each and define a first position of use for the laptop stand.
There are two kinds of laptop stands. The laptop stand mentioned by way of introduction is of a first kind and is known from for example WO 2006/012108 and US 2004/0007649. This type of stand is used when a person is working at a table or a desk and has separate keyboard for the laptop. The stand has a base plate to be placed on the table and a laptop supporting plate angularly adjustable in relation to the base plate. With a laptop placed on said stand in its position of use the user has the laptop screen at an comfortable height above the table so that he/she doesn't have to bend his/hers neck in order to look at the screen, thus achieving a more ergonomic work position.
This kind of stand is usually collapsible and portable as it is often used at temporary work tables and hence is to be brought along with the laptop.
In US 7 121 214 is shown a laptop stand of a second kind. This is a portable laptop desk, which is to placed on the user's legs when in use and provide a stable work surface. It further includes a mouse pad secured to the desk by a flexible hinge section.
A person using his/hers laptop In different places should accordingly bring along both kinds of stands In order to work comfortably.
Hence the object of the invention Is to provide a collapsible laptop stand with a lightweith construction which stand could be used both on a table and on the lap of the user without compromising the ergonomic aspects.
This object is achieved by means of a laptop stand of the by way of introduction mentioned type characterized in that the leg Is comprised by a third plate which is pivotable between a folded-in position, in which the third plate is essentially parallel to the second plate, and a folded-out position, in which the third plate is essentially parallel to the second plate and projecting beyond said plate to form a mouse plate, wherein the third plate being in its folded-out position and the first and the second plate being in said initial position define a second position of use for the laptop stand. This provides for a ergonomic, flexible and stable laptop stand, useable both on a table and on the lap of the user.
The second plate has preferably an opening, the shape of which corresponds to the shape of the third plate such that the third plate is received in said opening when it is in said folded-in position. With this construction the third plate when the stand is in the initial position doesn't add width to the stand. The opening further provides for heat dissipation when the stand is in its first position of use.
For easy angular adjustment the first plate preferably has a plurality of slits and the third plate has protrusions at its free end which are received in arbitrary slits when the laptop stand is in said first position of use.
The first plate has advantageously a cutout for receiving a part of the third plate in said folded-out position when the laptop stand is in said second position of use. This cutout provides for a levelled surface of the mouse pad and the laptop supporting surface in this position.
The third plate is preferably covered with a friction material suitable for working with a mouse.
One of the first and the second plate is advantageously covered with a heat isolating material for protecting the user from heat dissipating from the laptop in the second position of use.
Preferably the first plate is forming a base plate and the second plate is forming a laptop supporting plate when the laptop stand Is in Its first position of use. Advantageously the base -3.
plate on its surface opposite to the laptop supporting plate has anti-slide projections preventing the base plate from moving when placed on a table.
Further at least one tab is hingedly connected to the base plate and pivotable from a folded-rn position, in which it is essentially parallel to the base plate, towards the laptop supporting plate, wherein the tab has such a length that It in the first position of use for the laptop stand is received in and protruding from a slot in the laptop supporting plate, so that the protruding tab forms a laptop support stop in said first position of use. Hence, with a laptop on the stand the connection between the tab and the base plate is not directly loaded by the laptop as the tab is supported by the laptop supporting plate, which minimises the risk of fracture of the connection.
More preferably one tab is provided at each side edge of the base plate for providing an even load distribution of the laptop.
An embodiment of he invention will now be described in more detail, by way of example, and with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Fig. 1 is a plan view and shows a laptop stand in an initial position used for transport and storing; Fig. 2 is a plan view and shows the laptop stand in a second position of use with an unfolded mouse pad; Fig. 3 is a plan view and shows the laptop stand with a first and a second plate arranged side by side; Fig. 4 is a perspective view and shows the laptop stand with a laptop in the first position of use; and Fig 5 is a perspective view and shows the laptop stand in the first position of use with a laptop.
A laptop stand according the invention is a foldable, portable stand which can be used when working at a desk as well as with the laptop in the lap. The term laptop is to include portable computers, notebook computers, electronic data organizers etc. *4, The stand comprises a first plate 1 hingedly connected to a second plate 2. The second plate 2 is pivotable in relation to the first plate 1 between an initial position, in which the first and second plates 1, 2 are essentially parallel and superimposed, as is shown in Fig. 1, and an end position, in which the first and the second plates 1, 2 are arranged in an angle in relation to each other.
The stand further comprises a support leg in form of third plate 3, which is hingedly connected to the second plate 2. The third plate 3 in a locking position releasably locks the second plate 2 to the first plate 1 in an intermediate position, in which the first and the second plates 1, 2 are arranged in an angle of less than 900 in relation to each other, as is shown in Fig. 4 and 5. This position defines a first position of use for the laptop stand. In this position the first plate is forming a base plate 1, to be put on a table, and the second plate is forming a laptop supporting plate 2, on which the laptop is to be placed for achieving a comfortable position of the laptop screen.
For adjusting the angle between the base plate I and the laptop supporting plate 2 the base plate 1 has a plurality of slits 5 and the third plate 3 has protrusions 6 at its free end which are received in arbitrary slits when the laptop stand is in said first position of use. The angle between the base plate and the laptop supporting plate in said first position thus depends on in which slits the protrusions 6 are inserted. The largest possible angle to lock the base plate in relation to the laptop supporting plate is achieved when the protrusions are inserted in the slits closest to the hinge between the base plate and the laptop supporting plate, and vice versa, the smallest possible angle is achieved when the protrusions are inserted in the slits most distant from the hinge between the base plate and the laptop supporting plate.
It is of course possible that the third plate is hingedly connected to the base plate and inserted in slits in the laptop supporting plate instead.
A tab 8 is arranged on each side edge of the base plate 1. Each tab 8 is hingedly connected to and pivotable from a folded-in position, in which it is essentially parallel to the base plate 1, towards the laptop supporting plate 2. The tab 8 has such a length that it in the first position of use for the laptop stand is received in and protruding from a slot 9 in the laptop supporting plate 2, forming a support surface for the laptop to bear against In said first position, as is shown In FIg. 4.
The base plate I has an opening 10 on each side edge, the shape of which corresponds to the shape of the tab 8 such that the tab Is received in said opening when the tab is in its folded-rn position, flush with the base plate.
The base plate 1 has on its surface opposite to the laptop supporting plate anti-slide projections for preventing the base plate from sliding in the first position of use for the laptop.
The third plate 3 is further pivotable between a folded-in position (Fig. 1 and Fig. 3) and a folded-out position (Fig. 2).
In the folded-in position the third plate 3 is essentially parallel to the second plate 2 and received in an opening 4 in the second plate 2 with a shape corresponding to the shape of the third plate 3.
In the folded-out position the third plate 3 is essentially parallel to the second plate 2 and projecting beyond said plate to form a mouse plate 3.
The third plate 3 being in its folded-out position and the first and the second plate 1, 2 being in said initial position defmes a second position of use for the laptop stand. In this position of use the laptop stand is to be placed on the lap of the user.
The first plate 1 further has a cutout 7 for receiving a part of the third plate 3 in said folded-out position when the laptop stand is in the second position of use. The third plate 3 and the second plate thus form a comfortable flush work surface including a mouse plate in the second position of use for the laptop stand.
The mouse plate 3 is covered with a suitable friction material for sliding a mouse.
The first plate I is covered with a heat isolating material for protecting the user against heat dissipating from the laptop in the second position of use.
For locking the plates in the initial position the first plate 3 and the mouse plate 3 or the second plate 2 have mating Velcro strips on their surfaces facing each in the initial position.
In the preferred embodiment described above the laptop stand in its initial, collapsed position only takes space of two thin plates. The user can swiftly fold and unfold the stand. The laptop stand Is easy to bring along and provides the user with a convenient workplace anywhere.
