Abstract

A device for storing old newspapers and then binding them with string ready for recycling includes a number of features mounted on a flat board. These include two arms at an angle to the board suitable for supporting the papers, a holder for a roll of string, and a cutter for the string. The board may be mounted on a wall by means of screws through holes in the backing board.

Description

1 2458733 The Elephant Binder (for binding newspapers at home before recycling) escription The need for this invention is apparent when observing the piles of paper in plastic bags lying by the road side waiting to be picked up by the Local Authority recycling Schemes.
In future we will not have so many bags. The government is encouraging shops to end the use of most plastic shopping bags. The idea of wasting plastic bags in order to save paper is ridiculous. This apparatus meets the needs of every household to store and bind their waste newspaper and magazines before they are put out for recycling.
The apparatus combines a number of features and devices mounted on a flat piece of board to fulfil the following functions: * A place to store old newspapers and paper for recyling.
* A holder for a ball of string.
* A cutter to cut the string.
* Screw holes for fixing the board to a wall.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way ofexample with the following drawinas and photograph: Summary of the invention in this specific form (see figure 1 and hotograph1j The embodiment of the invention described here uses plywood for the board, wooden dowels for the tusks" to hold the paper, and a metal and plastic holder for the string.
Two arms C'tusks') are fixed to a board at an angle of 60 degrees and near to its base. At the top of the board is a holder for a reel of string. The holder is of a similar design as many toilet paper holders and the central spindle can be taken off easily to replace the ball of string. The arms are spaced apart in a way that critical to the apparatus as the spacing provides enough support for the folded newspapers and allows the string to be passed behind the papers and later tied at the top to bind them securely in a bundle.
The string needs to be of a natural material which does not get in the way of the recycling process of the paper. (Plastic string must not be used.) At the top of the board is a fixing for a standard craft knife blade.
This is designed with a blade protector in which there is a "V' shaped notch into which the string can be passed to cut it after the papers have been bound.
The board has two screw holes along the top edge which enables it to be fixed to a wall at a convenient height.
The arrangement of the string and the arms is such that the cut string will lie at the back of the papers as they are being stacked and before binding. This means that the papers can be bound on the device without the problems of moving them and puffing them on a surface to tie them together. This device means that one person can easily and quickly bind together the news papers.
The string held on holder at the top centre of the apparatus and the section of string hanging down is the trunk" of the elephant. The cutter on the top edge is designed to enable the string to be cut and to protect the users from the cutting edge of the blade with a flv" shaped notch in the guard for the cuffing blade.
Figure 2 shows the relative dimensions of the backing board, the tusks for holding the papers, the holder for the string and the position of the cuffing device. It also shows the location of the two fixing screws which are positioned to hold the apparatus firmly to a wall by conventional fixing screws wall fixing plugs.
The way in which the string can be tied round the papers is as shown in Figure 4.
The dangling end of the string is brought up and round to the top of the papers and tied in a simple slip knot around the string by the string holder. The string is pulled tight, the string cut at a point near to the end where it joins the string holder tied again to make the bundle secure.
