Abstract

The tool 8, for the removal of security grub screws 6, includes an elongate body and a profiled end 7. The profiled end engages with the grub screw when an external force is applied. The profiled end may have an internal recess for engaging with the inner security profile of the screw with the diameter of the recess less than the external dimension of the inner profile. The profiled end may also have an outer diameter greater than the external diameter of the inner security profile and less than the external diameter of the outer security profile. An internal recess 9 may allow for the tool to engage with the screw over a raised, hardened pin 2. A rubber washer 10 may additionally be attached to centralize the engagement of the tool with the screw. A spanner or other rotary motion tool can be attached to a hexagonal body of the tool.

Description

Security Grub Screw Removal Tool This invention relates to a device for removing Security Grub Screws.
Background of the Invention
A leading caravan chassis manufacturer provides a receiver for the attachment of a caravan anti theft device, the receiver is designed for use with their own locking device to prevent the theft of a caravan, it is available as standard fitment or as an optional extra when the caravan is purchased.
The receiver is a threaded boss that is accessible through the spoke of the wheel and was initially fitted with a yellow dust cap to prevent the ingress of dirt and road grime, since introducing the product a number of security manufacturers have utilised the receiver in the design of their own products.
To restrict the use of the receiver, the chassis manufacturer have now installed a security grub screw into the receiver of all the caravan chassis that are provided with the security option. There are a number of security profiles used in the head of the grub screw all of which rely on two internally shaped profiles that differ from code to code, one profile is central to the centre point of the grub screw, the second is toward the extent of the outside diameter of the grub screw, when tightened in place, the grub screw is recessed into the receiver leaving no external features protruding. The security of the screw is further enhanced with a centrally mounted raised hardened pin. Presently, the screw can only be removed with the correctly coded key when it is available, and the code known, once removed both key and security screw are discarded.
Devices for removal of security bolts and screws are common and generally rely on the use of cutting blades within the device to be driven into the face of the fastener to create an edge or projection to allow for the removal of the fastener with an impact driver device, many are dependent on the amount and depth of projections or edges created if the removal of security bolts or screws is to be successful. Such devices can rely on the necessity of the central point of the bolt or screw being capable of receiving an indentation for the tool to centre around.
A disadvantage to this type of device is when a hardened central pin exists within the design of the security fastener as it will now allow the creation of an indentation for the device to work. Further problems can occur when the central pin is raised as this will not allow the cutting blades to come into contact with the face of the fastener to create the required edge or projection for the tool to DgraspD to allow its release from the work piece.
Yet another problem can occur when the security screw is located in a recessed aperture and two internal profiles exist Within the design of the security screw as bladed devices that rely on cutting a projection or edge to the inner face will be unable to do so.
Summary of Invention
It is an object of the present invention to provide a device for the removal of security grub screws overcoming many of the disadvantages previously stated in the previous section titled Background of the Invention. 2.
A principal object of the present invention is to provide a device that allows for the removal of security grub screws where the integrity of the fastener relies on two mternaUy shaped proffles as the key. A feature of the device is an elongated profile on the lower portion of the device that co-operates with the integral shape of the fastener when struck several times with a hammer. An advantage of the device is that there is a greater contact area formed between the device and fastener. A further advantage of the device is that no damage is caused to the fastener. Another object of the present invention is to provide a device that allows for the removal of security grub screws where centrally mounted raised hardened pins feature within the integrity of the fastener. A feature of the device is a recess in the elongated profile of the lower portion of the device to fit over the centrally mounted raised hardened pin. An advantage of the device is that it can accommodate security fasteners where centrally mounted hardened pins exist.
Yet another object of the present invention is to provide a device that when repeatedly struck on the end to engage the elongated proffle to the fastener, the end does not distort in such a manner as not to allow a spanner or other rotary motion hand tool to be used to release the fastener. A feature of the device is a through hexagonal section with a relieved section at the opposite end to the elongated profile. An advantage of the device is that the damaged or deformed end will not impair the used of a spanner or other rotary motion hand tool.
Yet another object of the present invention is to provide a device that positions the lower portion of the device equally around the head of the fastener. A feature of the device is a rubber washer that is positioned on the very edge of the elongated portion of the device. An advantage of the device is that it negates the requirement to centre punch the security fastener prior to engagement. A further advantage of the device is as the device engages with the fastener, the rubber washer will be forced along the elongated profile to a shoulder on the device, when it reaches this point, it is an indication that the device is fully engaged.
Introduction to drawings
The invention will now be described solely by way of example and with reference to accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 shows an example of the receiver for the attachment of anti theft devices found on many current models of caravan.
Figure 2 shows a sectional side elevation of the receiver together with the security screw removal device.
Detailed description
Figure 1 details the receiver 1 and a typical example of the type of fastener 6 which is screwed into it is shown. The fastener 6 consists of two internally shaped profiles 3 and 4, these can differ from code to code and are centred around a hardened pin 2. When installed, the fastener 6 fits inside the recess 5.
Figure 2 shows the general arrangement of how the device 8 is to work. The deviceS is centralised into the receiver 1 by means of a rubber washer 10, the hardened pin 2 lies inside the recess 9. A force is applied to the end of the device so that the elongated profile 7 is forced between the area of the two shaped profiles 3 and 4. The device 8 is fully engaged into the fastener 6 when the rubber washer 10 is touching the shoulder 12. A spanner or other rotary motion hand tool can be attached to the hexagonal body of the device 8 to loosen the fastener from the receiver. The profile 11 is such that any distortation created by the use of force does not affect the fitment of band tools. 3.
