Abstract

In a needle valve, the pressure with which a seal 3 is pressed against an abutting wall is adjustable using a grub screw 9 and toothed wheel 4 adjustment system, such as to increase pressure on the seal to counteract seal wear. The needle valve may reside in a spray gun body 1.

Description

ADWSTABLE NEEDLE SEAL
The invention provides a novel mechanism for adjusting the compression on a fluid needle seal. The invention has particular application in a spray gun.
In equipment subjected regularly to high internal pressures, seals are subjected to continuous wear. This can reduce the effectiveness of the seal over time. The problem is addressed by adjusting compression on the one seal to compensate for any erosion.
In the particular case of spray guns, this has been addressed by the provision of an adjusting nut adjacent the seal. This is an effective solution but disadvantageous in that it requires the provision of a large aperture through which access can be given to adjust the nut. This necessitates a certain volume of gun body to house the nut and aperture.
**: Alternative solutions include the use of spring or 0-ring energised seals (collectively described as "active U cup" seals. The latter, however have a relatively short lifespan, especially when exposed to abrasive materials, and when worn out, necessitate a complete strip down of the gun for replacement.
The present invention seeks to provide a seal adjustment arrangement I.....
* which Is simple and reliable to use, uses minimal space and minimises the need for stripping or parts replacement.
In accordance with the present invention, there is provided a body having a bore, the bore leading to an internal cavity of the body, the cavity being sealed by a seal located In the bore which seal Is compressible by a nut configured for axial positional adjustment in the bore, wherein the nut has a circumferential surface provided with an arrangement of teeth configured to engage with the thread of an adjustment screw located in a second bore of the body and driveable in a direction tangential to the circumferential surface thereby to rotate the nut causing said axial positional adjustment and compressing the said seal.
The arrangement provides for a particularly compact design of spray gun body where the compression on a seal, in particular a needle seal can be easily and accurately adjusted merely by turning a screw with an appropriate screw driver. Thus in a preferred option, the body is a compact spray gun. The body may comprise a single piece or multiple joined pieces.
Where the body is a spray gun, the seal may be associated with the needle of a needle valve used for on/off fluid control.
The arrangement may be configured to be reversible allowing release of pressure as well as compression of the seal. * S. * . S * S.
Conveniently the screw thread and teeth are configured such that a single S...
turn of the screw adjusts the nut by one tooth. The number and separation of teeth and pitch of the screw thread can be selected to provide a predetermined degree of compression per turn. S...
The screw thread is conveniently received in a blind hole of very marginally greater diameter than the outside diameter of the screw.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the following figures in which; Figure 1 shows a first sectional view of a body in accordance with the invention and in particular the detail of the engagement of the screw thread with the toothed circumference of the nut.
Figure 2 shows a second sectional view, orthogonal to the first and details the arrangement of the screw and nut with respect to the seal.
As can be seen from the Figures, a spray gun body 1 includes a bore 2 which leads to an internal cavity of the gun. Within the bore 2 sits a seal 3 which seals a cavity 11. The seal sits around a needle 6 of a needle valve controllable by means of handle 8 to operate the valve on/off at the spray head 7 of the gun.
A nut 4 carries the seal 3 and has a circumferential end which is provided with equally spaced teeth 4a. The teeth engage wfth a thread 5a of an adjustment screw 5 located in a blind hole 9. The screw 5 is rotatable in the blind hole 9 by means of a screw head 10.
Rotation of the screw 5 by means of screw head 10 causes the thread 5a of the screw to drive the teeth 4a of the nut 4 circumferentially. This * ** rotation drives the nut 4 by means of a screw thread 46, towards the spray head 7 increasing compression on the seal 3. I. S. *1 * * *
