Abstract
A single use cannula/needle system which includes a hub 10 movable within a sheath 11. There is an exit port at one end of the sheath through which the hub 10 can be withdrawn, and a blocking member 20 at the exit port. The blocking member 20 is designed to permit movement of the hub 10 out of the exit port but is so arranged that, when the hub 10 is moved out of the exit port, it moves (or is moved) into a blocking position in which re-entry of the hub into the sheath is prevented. The blocking member 20 may be a plastic flap that moves to its blocking position when the hub 10 is moved out of the exit port. This movement may occur as a result of a resilient bias in the flap 20 or due to engagement with the hub 10 on its exit.
Description
CANNULA/NEEDLE SYSTEMS
Field of the Invention
A cannula is a flexible tube which, when inserted into the body is used either to withdraw fluid or to insert medication. Cannulae normally come with a trocar (a sharp pointed needle) attached which allows puncture of the skin to get into the intended space.
Intravenous cannulae are the most common in hospital use.
As supplied to a hospital or other user, the cannula/needle will normally be mounted on a hub that is movable within a sheath.
Cross-infection or contamination can occur if a cannula/needle is used more than once and it is accordingly an object of the present invention to provide an improved cannula/needle system.
Summary of the Invention
According to the present invention there is provided a cannula/needle system that includes a hub movable within a sheath, an exit port at one end of the sheath through which the hub can be withdrawn, and a blocking member at the exit port, the blocking member being designed to permit movement of the hub out of the exit port but being so arranged that, when the hub is moved out of the exit port, it moves (or is moved) into a blocking position in which re-entry of the hub into the sheath is prevented.
The sheath is preferably formed as a plastic moulding and the blocking member is preferably in the form of a plastic flap or fin that moves (or is moved) into its blocking position when the hub is moved out of the exit port.
The plastic flap or fin may extend inwardly of the sheath from the exit port with the arrangement such that, when the hub is moved out of the exit port, the plastic flap or fin moves resiliently into its blocking position.
The plastic flap or fin may alternatively (or additionally) be arranged so that a part of the hub or cannula engages the flap or fin as the hub is being moved out of the exit port to displace (or assist in moving) the flap or fin into its blocking position.
The plastic flap or fin may alternatively extend outwardly of the sheath from the exit port with the flap or fin being biased resiliently towards its blocking position but being prevented, by engagement with the hub, from moving into its blocking position until the hub is moved out of the exit port.
The cannula/needle system can thus be used in the normal way, by removing the hub from the sheath but the hub cannot be reinserted in the sheath, thereby preventing re-sheathing of the cannula/needle and thus re-use of the cannula/needle.
Brief Description of the Drawings
Figure 1 shows the sheath of a cannula/needle system in accordance with a first embodiment of the present invention with the blocking member in the position that it occupies prior to withdrawal of the cannula/needle, Figure 2 is a view similar to Figure 1, but showing movement of the blocking member, Figures 3 (A) and (B) show the sheath and hub of the first embodiment of the present invention, Figure 4 shows the sheath and hub of a cannula/needle system in accordance with a second embodiment of the present invention, and Figure 5 shows the sheath of the embodiment of Figure 4 and illustrates the range of movement of the blocking member.
Description of the Preferred Embodiments
The first embodiment of the invention, which is shown in Figures, 1, 2, 3(A) and 3(B), includes a plastic hub 10 that fits inside a plastic cylindrical sleeve 11. The sleeve 11 has an exit end, through which the hub 10 can be withdrawn and, at the exit end, there is a circumferentially extending outwardly projecting flange 12.
At the exit end, there is also a thin substantially circular flexible fin or flap 13.
The hub 10 includes a body portion 14 that is a free sliding fit within the sleeve 11 and, at the outer end of the body portion 14 there is an outwardly projecting flange 15 arranged to abut against the flange 12 to limit the extent by which the hub 10 can be inserted into the sleeve 11. At the inner end of the body portion 14, a needle (not shown) may be provided. The body portion 14 of the hub 10 also includes a projecting hook or ridge formation 16.
When the hub 10 is within the sleeve 11, the fin or flap 13 is pressed resiliently into the position shown in Figure 1. When, however, the hub 10 is pulled outwardly relative to the sleeve 11, the projecting hook or ridge formation 16 will engage the fin or flap 13 and will cause it to pivot outwardly, as indicated in Figures 2 and 3(A). The size of the fin or flap 13 is such that, when the hub 10 has been fully withdrawn from the sleeve 11, the fin or flap 13 will return resiliently into a position in which it blocks the exit end of the sleeve 11 ensuring that the hub 10 cannot be put back into the sleeve 11.
In the second embodiment of the invention, shown in Figures 4 and 5, a resilient flap 20 is provided at the exit end of the sleeve 11 and is held in a position in which it projects outwardly away from the exit end of the sleeve 11 and rests on the flange 15 of the hub 10.
The flap 20 is so formed that it has a tendency to return resiliently to the position shown in Figure 5. Thus, when the hub 10 is taken out of the exit end of the sleeve 11, the flap 20 will move into the blocking position shown in Figure 5 preventing the hub 10 being put back in the sleeve 11.
The flap 20 shown in Figures 4 and 5 is in the form of a generally flat plate that is movable from the non-blocking position shown in Figure 4 into the blocking position, as shown in Figure 5. In a modification to the arrangement shown in Figures 4 and 5, the configuration of the flap corresponds to a mirror image of a figure "7", rotated through 900 and resting on the cannula hub 10 in its non-blocking position. The shape of the flap is such that it does not prevent withdrawal of the cannula hub 10 from the sleeve 11 but, once the hub 10 has been withdrawn, the flap will then move resiliently into a blocking position.
