Abstract

An apparatus for collecting, storing and releasing solar energy comprises a combined solar heat storage and heat radiation system. The apparatus may capture solar energy using a solar energy collector 1. Preferably, the apparatus does not employ a separate hot water tank for heat storage and/or heat release, but advantageously releases solar energy to the surrounding environment by a heat radiator mechanism 5. Preferably, the apparatus transfers and stores solar energy in a heat retaining medium 7 integrated within the radiator, and then releases solar energy stored in the medium during periods of solar inactivity. The apparatus may further comprise a solar powered pump 10, connected into a closed fluid network distribution system, with mechanisms to control its operation.

Description

I
Solar energy collection, storage and release device.
This invention relates to a device for collecting, storing and releasing solar energy.
Solar energy can be collected using a variety of methods, for example direct radiated solar heat absorption. There are also a number of methods for storing solar energy once it has been collected, such as hot water storage tanks, and captured solar energy can then be released for example using mechanisms such as heat emitting radiators. Consequently there could be at least three distinct components to a solar energy capture system, namely collection, storage and release units, the complexity of some existing solar energy capture devices being due directly to the number of units required.
To overcome this problem, the present invention proposes that the solar energy storage and solar energy release systems are combined, the solar energy storage system being fed with solar energy carried from the solar energy collector by means of a closed fluid network. The integrated solar energy release system stores and distributes solar energy carried within the closed fluid network, stored in a heat-retaining medium and released through a heat radiator mechanism.
The combination of the solar energy storage and solar energy release systems reduces the complexity of the device, and by removing the requirement for a separate hot water storage tank, simplifies manufacture and installation.
The device is more self-contained than existing systems by reducing the number of separate components, and is self-powered by the inclusion of a solar powered circulating pump inserted into the closed fluid network.
The invention will now be described solely by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 shows the solar energy collector, solar powered pump and combined solar energy storage and radiator unit.
In figure 1 a solar energy collector 1 containing a closed fluid network captures solar energy using a tube arranged to maximise solar energy collection 2, in the drawing illustrated by multiple bends and returns of the tube. The closed fluid network outlet 3 is connected via a tube, which enters the combined storage/radiator unit 4. The casing of the storage/radiator unit 5 completely encloses the unit. The fluid circulating in the closed fluid network flows into the casing of the storage/radiator unit 6, and circulates in close proximity to a heat-retaining medium 7, which is integrated into the storage/radiator casing. Heat carried in the fluid and held within the heat-retaining medium is conducted to the surrounding environment through the casing of the storage/radiator unit. The closed fluid network outlet from the storage/radiator unit 8 is connected via a tube 9 to a solar powered pump 10 with mechanisms to control its operation. The closed fluid network outlet from the solar powered pump is connected via a tube 11 to the solar energy collector to complete the closed fluid network.
