DISPLAY OF MOBILE COMMUNICATION DEVICE CONNECTION
INFORMATION
Field of the Invention
The invention relates to a method and apparatus for displaying connection 5 information for a mobile communication device on that device, such as display of connection to a network.
Background of the Invention
Mobile communication systems operate on a cellular basis in which transmitter and receiver base stations coupled to a network provide 10 transmission and reception to user equipment (UE) such as mobile telephones in each cell in the network. There is usually a single base station in each cell. The base stations themselves are usually referred to as macro base stations and the cells are as Macro Cells.
Smaller cell sites called pico cells have been proposed. These cover 15 smaller areas such as a complex of buildings. Still smaller cell sites named Femtocells are also proposed. This term refers to cell sites of the type, which attempt to solve the often expensive problem of providing complete in-building coverage. Pico cells can have problems with low signal levels or multi-path distortion etc. when they are used to provide 20 coverage to a complete building.
The Femtocell is often referred to as a access point/home gateway. It is a small plug and play device, which communicates with user equipment such as mobile handsets using standard 2G or 3G transmission and reception. It is connected to the cellular network via a broadband service 25 using, for example, but is not limited to Xdsl (digital subscriber loop) or Wimax technology. Optionally a Femtocell can incorporate the functionality of a broadband router so that a user has a completely integrated device. It is of course essential that it integrates seamlessly
1
with the core network of the mobile communication system so that it can be remotely managed and updated.
When a communication device registers with a network it obtains what is known as the public land mobile network (PLMN) identification code from 5 the network. This PLMN ID is then mapped to a suitable text string stored in either the SIM/USIM card or permanent memory of the mobile communication device. This text string is retrieved for display on the display device of the mobile communication device to indicate the identity of the network with which the device is registered to the user.
10 If the text string is stored in user equipment (UE) memory it cannot be changed once the UE is with the end user. If it is stored in the SIM/USIM, then it is stored in a field called the elementary field service provider name (EF-SPN), which can be updated over the network to store a different text string. There is at present no mechanism to display on user equipment an 15 indication that it is in communication with a Femtocell, or the identity of the service provider for that Femtocell. Therefore, a user is not able to identify when he is registered with a Femtocell, and whether that Femtocell is provided by his home network or some other network. He is therefore unable to determine whether any of the services he receives from his 20 Femtocell, such as cheaper calls are available.
Summary of the Invention
Preferred embodiments of the present invention provide a user with an indication on his mobile communication device when that device is registered with a Femtocell and when the device is registered with a Macro 25 Cell in the cellular network, and with the identity of the network to which the Femtocell is coupled.
2
Preferably, embodiments of the invention store text data relating to a Femtocell for display in an elementary field service provider (EF-SPN) name location in an SIM/USIM card installed in the device.
A preferred embodiment of the invention provides a method for indicating 5 user equipment (UE) that the UE is registered with a Femtocell comprising the steps of reading a PLMN identification code from the Femtocell to the UE, retrieving a text string stored in an SIM/USIM card of the UE in response to the PLMN ID, and displaying the text string.
The preferred embodiment of the invention also provides an apparatus for 10 use in mobile user equipment (UE) for indicating when the UE is registered with a Femtocell comprising means for reading a PLMN identification code from the Femtocell to the UE, means for retrieving a text string stored in an SIM/USIM card of the UE in response to the PLMN ID, and means for displaying the thus retrieved text string.
The preferred embodiments of the invention also provide a cellular mobile communication system comprising a plurality of Macro cells and at least one Femtocell covering a small area within a Macro cell and registered to a subscriber, the subscriber having at least one mobile user equipement (UE) containing an SIM/USIM card, the SIM/USIM card containing a text string which will be displayed when the mobile communication device is registered with a Femtocell, the mobile communication device storing additional text strings corresponding to a plurality of service providers for display when the mobile communication device is registered with a Macro cell of that service provider, the mobile communication device being responsive to a PLMN identification code received from a Femtocell or a Macro cell to retrieve a text string corresponding to that PLMN identification code, and means for displaying the thus retrieved code.

Brief Description of the Drawings
A preferred embodiment of the invention will now be described in detail by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 shows schematically a Femtocell and a device with which it may 5 communicate;
Figure 2 shows data storage within a SIM/USIM card embodying the invention.
Detailed description of preferred embodiments
Figure 1 shows an access point 2 (Femtocell), which is coupled to a 10 network. This comprises an antenna 4 coupled to, or integrated into a controller and a transmit/receive unit. This is the basic configuration for a Femtocell and the transmit/receive range of the unit will be relatively short so that it can cover a small area such as a house. User equipment such as a mobile phone 6 or a laptop with a data card 8 may be positioned within 15 or very close to the house and will therefore be capable of communicating with the access point 2. In a larger area such as an office environment there may be a number of different pieces of equipment capable of communicating with the access point 2.
When a piece of user equipment initially comes within range of the access 20 point 2, it registers with the access point as being a primary access point on a network for transmission and reception of data. Thus, when the user equipment next tries to communicate such as by making a telephone call, it will attempt to use the access point 2 to access the network.
The Femtocell may be connected to the network via the Macro Cell within 25 which it is positioned or directly to the network via a landline or by using an Ethernet interface. In a preferred embodiment of the invention, a piece of user equipment such as a mobile phone 6 includes an SIM/USIM card

issued by the user's service provider. When the UE is registered with a Macro Cell, it displays the identity of the network providing the Macro Cell. This is done as described above by matching the PLMN of the Macro cell to a text string stored within the memory of the UE. The text string is then 5 displayed on the UE.
In an embodiment of the invention, the SIM/USIM card stores in its EF-SPN location a text string, which indicates that the device is registered with a Femtocell. This may simply be the text string Femtocell. The EF-SPN is responsive via a display condition comparison with an incoming 10 Elementary Field International Mobile Subscriber Identifier (EF-IMSI), within this the HPLMN is provided from the SIM within the UE. This EF-IMSI identifier includes display condition bits to retrieve the correct text string In the examples shown in figure 2, if the bit b1=0 and bit b2=1 then the text Femtocell stored in the memory of the SIM/USIM card is provided 15 for display on a user's mobile communication device.
In order to achieve this, it is necessary to distribute new SIM/USIM cards to Femtocell subscribers to ensure that when they use their mobile communication devices with a Femtocell, that their devices display the fact that they are registered with a Femtocell. Thus, the home PLMN ID in 20 these SIM/USIM cards causes the UE to match the HPLMN text with the SPN text that is Femtocell. This is displayed in the UE when the display condition bits of the EF SPM are set as bits b1 = 0 and b2 = 1. Thus, when the user equipment comes in range of a Femtocell, it will register with that Femtocell and will receive the EF-IMSI from the Femtocell. The display 25 condition bits are the compared and the text "Femtocell" is retrieve from the SIM/USIM card for displays.
When the UE registers with the home Macro Cell, then a PLMN ID from that Macro Cell will be received and will cause the device to retrieve an appropriate text string from hard memory and not use the SPN field. The 30 hard memory string will be displayed to the user. Thus, the UE will display
5
Femtocell when the UE is registered with Femtocell and Macro cell, when the UE is registered to the home Macro cell network. This is not limited solely to text strings Femtocell and Macro cell and other strings could be used. The operator's name can still be used for Macro cell coverage.
5 When the UE is registered with the HPLMN (Femtocell) then the SPN is retrieved and displayed. When the UE is registered with another PLMN which is stored in the UE memory then text is retrieved from memory and displayed. The device may register with a number of different service providers and therefore the memory of the device stores text relating to 10 these. Thus, the device may display text indicating that it is registered with a Femtocell and text indicating the name of the service provider with which the Femtocell is registered.
