Abstract

Rig tubing 24 for fining around a fishing line near to the hook to assist in keeping the hook in one position on a lake bottom consists of a close wound metal helix 36 through which a fishing line 10 can be threaded. The helix may be constructed of stainless steel and can be coated on its outer surface with a coloured coating 38. The coating 38 may be provided by applying a shrink fit sleeve to the outer surface, by painting or by dipping the helix in liquid plastics. The tubing 24 may have an internal diameter of between 0.4 mm and 2 mm

Description

-1-2456332 Rig Tubing This invention relates to rig tubing using by anglers to induce their fishing line to lie on the bottom of a body of water.
It is important in angling, especially in still water like a lake, for the tackle which lies below the water to remain still and invisible to the fish. As the fishing line itself is very thin and relatively light in weight, it is conventional to thread the line through a length of tubing with the tubing lying close up to the hook and lead weight, so that the part of the line within the tubing is kept in a stable position, on the lake bottom.
According to the invention, there is provided rig tubing in the form of a close-wound helix of metal wire surrounding a bore of the tubing. *
S S. **
The helix will normally be of constant diameter along its length. Close wound means that the turns of the helix are each in contact with the adjacent turns.
*.*S SS S * The use of metal wire in the form of a helix gives a relatively high weight per unit length to the tubing, and also allows the tubing to follow the contours of an * ** :. * underwater surface. It is also easy to thread a line through the tubing.
S S * * S *.
The wire is preferably stainless steel.
The helix may be provided with a coloured outer surface, often desired by anglers to merge with the surface of a lake bed. The colouring can be provided for example by painting the outer surface, by dipping the helix in a coating material or by applying a shrink-fit sleeve to the outer surface.
The rug tubing is particularly intended for lake fishing, especially carp fishing.
The invention will now be further described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 shows diagrammatically the configuration of a fishing rig with rig tubing fitted in the line; Figure 2 shows the hook end of the rig in more detail; and Figure 3 is a cross-section, on a much enlarged scale, of the rig tubing of the invention, with a fishing line running through.
Figure 1 shows diagrammatically a fishing situation where the invention is being used. A fishing line 10 extends from a reel 12 on a rod 14 into a body of water 16.
The tackle 18 at the end of the rod rests on the bottom 20 and ends in a hook 22.
The invention is primarily intended for fishing in lakes where the water is still and * I. relatively shallow. In particular the invention is likely to be used for carp fishing.
The angler wants his baited hook to lie still on the bottom of the lake, waiting for a 4 fish to be attracted.
As can be seen in Figure 1, the tackle 18 includes a length of rig tubing 24 through * ** :. * which the line 10 is threaded. At the other end of the line, the line is attached to *S * *.: the hook 22 and to a lead weight 26. The rig tubing 24 has a significant mass per unit length (compared to that of the line 10) and is flexible so that it can drape over any irregularities on the lake bottom. In figure 1, it can be seen that the tubing is following the contours of a hump 28 on the lake bottom 20.
The tackle 18 comprises the hook 22, a lead clip 30, the lead 26, a swivel 32 and a tail rubber 34. The tail rubber 34 has a through bore and a tapered outer surface as shown. The rig tubing 24 is pushed into the narrow end of the rubber, and the wider end fits over the lead clip and holds the lead clip closed under normal conditions.
P548 1.A2 11 January2008 The tubing 24 is shown in more detail, and on a greatly enlarged scale, in Figure 3. The tubing consists of a close-wound wire helix 36, with no gaps between the turns of the helix. In essence, the helix is wound in the manner of a spring. The helix thus defines a bore through which the line 10 can be threaded. For example, the diameter of a typical fishing line may be 0.35 mm and the internal diameter of the bore can be between 0.4 mm and 2.0 mm. It is of course a requirement that the line can be easily threaded through the tubing, so the tubing inner diameter may vary according to the thickness of line being used.
The wire will be metal, and may be stainless steel or another grade of steel. It has been found that a close wound metal helix possess the desired characteristics of weight per unit length, the ability to drape itself over irregular surfaces and ease of threading a line through the bore.
* ..* Anglers also require their tackle to blend in with the underwater surface where *.S ** *... they are fishing. Consequently, the outer surface of the helix can be provided with * a coloured coating 38. This coating may be applied as a paint, but is more likely to 4 be in the form of a flexible plastics sleeve which can be applied either by dipping the helix in liquid plastics which then solidifies on the sheath, or by applying a shrink-fit sleeve to the helix. The coating can then be made in any desired colour, * ** :. * and it is anticipated that anglers will be able to purchase the rig tubing of the * S *. .: invention in one of a range of different colours depending on whether they will be fishing where the bottom is (for example) sandy, muddy or covered in weed.
The tubing may also be available in various different standard lengths.
The tubing of the invention thus has significant advantages over conventional extruded plastic tube in being heavier per unit length and better at following the contours of a lake bottom. Furthermore, it has been found that it is much easier to thread a fishing line through the tubing of the invention than through conventional tubing, and that no additional threading aids are needed.
