Abstract
A video tape stretching machine, producing a single strand of elongated material by placing video tape between clamping unit 3 and clamping unit 5. Clamping unit 3 and clamping unit 5 will then be moved apart to stretch and elongate the video tape into a single strand of material 4. The machine may make use of clamping unit cams 8 and drum 10 to stretch the video tape into a single strand of elongated material. The machine is used to recycle video tapes.
Description
VIDEO TAPE RECYCLING MACHINE
This invention relates to a machine capable of changing and converting the existing video tape within a video cassette, by stretching the video tape so that it changes from its present tape form, into a single strand of elongated material which then becomes suitable to be woven into a fabric.
If you take a length of video tape between your hands and stretch it (this can be done at room temperature), the tape will form into a single strand of approximately 0.40mm diameter (0.016 thousandths of an inch) and will remain in this state, at the same time it will increase in length by approximately 20%. To do this in quantity and to produce consistent size of strand, a mechanical process will be required.
The recording of TV programs and the playing of films that are presently stored on video tape are rapidly becoming replaced by new methods of storage such as hard drive machines and DVD players. This means that many hundreds of thousands of existing video cassettes containing many meters in length of video tape will become obsolete and discarded.
The invention and method of stretching video tape so that it changes from its present tape form into a single strand of material will now be described with, reference to the accompanying drawings.
Figure 1 shows a side view of the video tape stretching machine.
Figure 2 shows a top view of the video tape stretching machine, and the effect of stretching and elongating video tape.
Figure 3 shows an alternative method of clamping the video tape before stretching the video tape.
Figure 4 shows a further alternative method of clamping, stretching and elongating video tape.
In figure 1 the invention proposes an extraction of the video tape 2 from its holding cassette 1, two clamping units 3,5 so that the tape can be stretched between the two clamping units by moving clamping unit 5 away from clamping unit 3, this action causing the tape to be stretched and form a single strand of elongated material 4. The clamping units 3,5 will then be unclamped and the tape/Strand of material moved along and spooled onto a bobbin 6, before the process is repeated.
Figure 2 is a view of figure 1 from above, this shows the effect upon the video tape when clamping unit 5 is moved away from clamping unit 3 and producing the single strand of elongated material.
Figure 3 shows an alternative clamping unit in which the tape is wound through two sets of offset cams 8 and 9. When the tape comes under tension the cams close together to hold the tape, and on moving clamping unit 9 away from clamping unit 8, the tape will be stretched to form a single strand of elongated material 4. The clamping units 8,9 will then be unclamped and the strand of elongated material moved along and spooled onto bobbin 6, and the process then repeated until all the video tape within the video cassette I has been removed and formed into a single strand of elongated materiaL Figure 4 shows a further alternative embodiment and method of stretching the video tape 2 in which a drum 10 is rotated around its central axis, and the single strand of elongated material 4 having been wound around the drum several times, produces a friction grip, this causes the video tape 2 to be stretched when clamping unit 8 is locked under tension.
FigureS is a view of figure 4 from above, this shows the effect upon the video tape 2 when clamping unit 8 is locked and the drum lOis rotated around its central axis causing video tape 2 to stretch and form single strand of elongated material 4.
Claims (4)
1. A video tape stretching machine, comprising means for removing video tape from its cassette, a clamping unit to clamp and hold video tape firmly as the video tape is stretched to form a single strand of elongated material, and a spooling bobbin for spooling and storing of the resulting single strand of elongated materiaL
2. A video tape stretching machine according to claim!, in which two video tape clamping units are moved apart to stretch video tape into a single strand of elongated material.
3. A video tape stretching machine according to claim!, where by a clamping unit, comprising of two cams having video tape wound between them, lock together and clamp the video tape when tension is aplied to the video tape by stretching.
4. A video tape stretching machine according to claim!, in which the video tape stretching means is caned out by clamping the video tape, the tape further wound around a drum, and the drum rotated about its axis, with the effect of gripping the strand of material and stretching the preceding video tape into a single strand of elongated material.
