Abstract

A tape disconnect link suitable for disconnecting a tape 3,5, to allow a powered spreader bar in a patient hoist to be removed from an overhead track (not illustrated), comprises in the first of two rigid link members 1 and 2 an irregular shaped hole 10 formed therethrough of such a shape that it can accept a projecting member 11,12 on the second of the two links, the projecting member being formed in such a way that it can pass through the hole 10 in one position of rotation but is retained by the hole in a rotated position due to the irregular and overhanging shape of the projecting member.

Description

A TAPE DISCONNECT LINK
The use of tapes in the rehab industry to lift patients is well known.
The use of powered spreader bars is also well known. One of the main benefits associated with the use of a powered spreader bar is the ease with which they can be removed from a track and re-sited on another track. A conirnon method of removing the powered spreader bar from the track is to unhook the tape from a trolley hook at track level. This involves accessing the tape connection at track level.
The present invention relates to a method of disconnecting the tape from the powered spreader bar at a point in the lower end of the tape such that when the powered spreader bar is removed most of the tape remains attached to the track.
In order that the invention may be better understood reference will now be made to the accompanying drawings where: -Fig #1 shows the invention in three dimensions in the straight and latched condition.
Fig #2 shows the invention in three dimensions and rotated to the position where the two parts can be disconnected.
Fig #3 shows the invention in three dimensions and with the two parts disconnected.
Fig #4 shows the invention in three dimensions with the two parts disconnected and in line with the tape.
Now referring to the figures.
A fixed tape (5) has its free end attached to a tape drum within the powered spreader bar and is of such length that enough tape can be wound outside the powered spreader bar to enable the tape disconnect link to be operated. This length of tape can be lengthened to any length that is longer than the minimum if required. The fixed tape (5) is fed through a fixed tape slot (9) to provide a folded fixed tape (6). The folded fixed tape (6) is sewn or otherwise attached to the fixed tape (5) in order to retain it within the fixed tape slot.
A removable tape disconnect member (1) is attached to a removable tape (3) by threading the removable tape (3) through a removable tape slot (8) to form a folded removable tape (4) that is stitched or otherwise attached to the removable tape (3).
Fig #1 shows the tape disconnect link in its attached condition. In order to disconnect the link it is necessary to rotate the removable tape disconnect member (1) relative to the fixed tape disconnect member (2) as shown in Fig #2 and then move the two parts vertically as shown in Fig #3. The tape disconnect link is joined by reversing the disconnect procedure.
When joined the two disconnect members (1) (2) are held together by a retaining member (11) that is attached to the fixed tape disconnect member (2) by means of a retaining attachment pillar (12) said retaining member being trapped in an attachment hole (10) which is formed in the removable tape disconnect member.
In use the entire tape disconnect link is wound on to the tape drum. This drum may have a circular core or it may have a flat at the position that the tape disconnect link takes up when it is wound on the drum. When the tape disconnect link is wound on the drum and a load is applied to the tape (4) the tape disconnect link may try to take up an arc shape from its flat starting shape. In practice there can be some bending, and this bending can be most
S
prevalent at the points where slots (8) (9) are cut in the tape disconnect members (1) (2). Such bending is not important if it only happens one time. It can be assumed that the fixed tape disconnect member (2) is always the same way around as the user cannot remove it from the tape drum. The user could however assemble the removable tape disconnect member (1) on in two possible ways. If this were done regularly then the bend in the removable tape disconnect member (1) would be first in one direction and then in the other, such bending actions would ultimately cause metal fatigue and the removable tape disconnect member (I) would break. In order to overcome this problem a connection key (7) is formed on the removable tape disconnect member (1) such that it cannot be fitted upside down on the fixed tape disconnect member (2). By this means any bending of the parts is always in the same direction and thus no metal fatigue will be experienced.
Both disconnect members (1) (2) have one side tapered such that when the two members are connected and are rotated relative to each other, they can be parted before their sides foul the projecting tapes (3) (4) (5) (6). The amount of metal removed to form the tapered sides is kept to a minimum by having the retaining member(l 1) offset from the centre line of the tape (3) (4) (5) (6).
Accordingly the present invention comprises a tape disconnect link comprising two rigid link members, each attached to one end of the two tapes to be connected, said first link having an irregular shaped hole formed through it and of such a shape that it can accept a projecting member on said second link, and said projecting member being formed such that it can pass through the hole formed in the said first member, and when the two members are rotated to their operating position then the projecting member on said second link is prevented from being removed from the hole in said first member due to the irregular and overhanging shape of said projecting member on said second member.

Claims (5)

  1. I) A tape disconnect link comprising two rigid link members, each attached to one end of the two tapes to be connected, said first link having an irregular shaped hole formed through it and of such a shape that it can accept a projecting member on said second link, and said projecting member being formed such that it can pass through the hole formed in the said first member, and when the two members are rotated to their operating position then the projecting member on said second link is prevented from being removed from the hole in said first member due to the irregular and overhanging shape of said projecting member on said second member.
  2. 2) A claim as claimed in claim 1 and generally as shown in the attached drawings.
  3. 3) A claim as claimed in claims 1 and 2 where a connection key is attached to one or both the rigid link members to ensure that they can only be assembled with particular faces in contact.
  4. 4) A claim as claimed in claims I and 3 where part of one or both the rigid link members is cut away in order to miss the connected tape when the two members are rotated in order to separate them from each other.
  5. 5) A claim as claimed in claims I to 4 where the irregular shaped retaining member is offset from a central position. c
