Abstract
A construction toy comprises a plurality of interlockable tiles configured to be assembled together to form patterns. The tiles having a plurality of shapes to include a triangle (<B>figure 2</B>) having at least one concave or convex side and a petal (<B>figure 6</B>) formed of two concave arcs. Each tile has a flat top surface <B>17</B> and a down-turned rim <B>11</B> at the periphery of the flat surface <B>17</B>. Each tile includes at least one tongue <B>22</B> formed into at least one side of the down-turned rim <B>11</B> and at least one corresponding groove <B>21</B> formed into at least one side of the down-turned rim <B>11</B>, the tongue <B>22</B> and groove <B>21</B> not being formed in the same said down-turned rim <B>11</B>. The tongues <B>22</B> and grooves <B>21</B> may be formed in the bottom part of the down-turned rim, so that when assembled, the grooves <B>21</B> are hidden by the top surface <B>17</B>.
Description
CONSTRUCTION TOY ESPECIALLY FOR YOUNG CHILDREN
The present invention relates to an assembly toy, designed for young children, comprising a plurality of tiles having complementary concave and convex shapes, which are joined to each other by tongues and grooves to form patterns.
Vanous types of construction tiles using tongues and grooves are known. These tiles or blocks are used to create two or three dimensional shapes or structures.
An example of such known construction sets are those in FR 1242746 in which the construction set is provided with polygonal shaped tiles having straight peripheral side walls. The patterns created with this construction set have straight edges resulting in a tack of creativity and lack of interest especially when used by very young children.
The present invention provides with an improvement in assembly construction toy made especially for young children, comprising a plurality of fiat tiles, having shapes and features which are not present in the prior art to provide with a wide range of designs, shapes and patterns in two dimensional scope. These patterns have curved concave and/or convex edges resulting in more creative and more desirable and attractive shapes in order to entertain and progressively stimulate the ingenuity of very young children and develop their initiative and their imagination.
Accordingly It is an object of the present invention to accomplish these objections by providing a construction toy kit which is so simple that its appeal to a young child will be instant.
There is provided in accordance with a preferred embodiment of the present invention an assembly toy comprising a plurality of generally flat tiles provided in a varIety of dilTerent shapes and colors, whIch can be connected to each other by tongue and groove connections.
The tiles include a plurality of different shapes to include a triangle having one or more concave and/or one or more convex complementary peripheral side waits and a petal formed of two concave arcs; each said tile is provided with a horizontally disposed regular top flat surface and a plurality of upstanding side wails arranged at the periphery of said regular top flat surface; each said tile include one or more tongue into the bottom part of one or more peripheral side walls and one or more corresponding groove into the bottom base of one or more peripheral side walls so that tiles can be connected between each other to form an unlimited number of patterns.
Other objects, advantageous and novel features of the present invention will become more apparent from the following detailed description accompanying the following drawings, in which; FIGS.lto 5 show a top perspective view of the preferred embodiments taking part in the construction toy set of the present invention.
FIG.6 shows a bottom perspective view of the tile of FIG.3.
FIGS.7 to 15 illustrate patterns, at a reduced scale, made from combining and connecting tiles of the present invention.
FIGS.16 to 18 show pairs of tongues and corresponding grooves that may be used on the tiles of the present invention.
Refemng to the drawings: FIGS.1 toO, the preferred embodiments of the toy set of the pre'enL invention which are explained as follows.
The construction toy of the present invention comprises tiles 10,20, 30,40 and 50 of respectively FIGS.1 to 5 WhiCh are formed with a horizontally disposed regular top fiat surface 17 and upstanding concave and/or convex complementary peripheral side walls.
FIG. 1 shows a top perspective view of a tile 10 formed of triangular shape having three concave peripheral side walls 11. FIG.2 shows a top perspective view of a tile 20 formed of biangular shape having three convex peripheral side waIls 12.

FIG.4 shows a top perspective view of a tile 40 formed with a triangular shape having two convex peripheral side walls 12 and one concave peripheral side waIl 11. FIG.5 shows a top perspective view of a tile 50 which has a shape of a petal being formed of two concave arc peripheral side wails 11 which are complementary to the convex peripheral side walls 12 of the tiles of the present invention. The tile 50 may also be provided in an oval shape having two concave arcs. FIG.6 illustrates a bottom perspective view of tile 30 of FIG.3.
The tiles of the present invention may also be provided in any other polygonal shape having any combination of concave and convex complementary side walls.
The bottom side of the tiles of the present invention can be provided as hollow as shown from the tile 30 of FIG.6 or can be formed as a whole block.
Theconvexand concaveperipheratsidewallsofthetilesOfthePresefltiflVefltiofl are all complementary to each other.
In FIGS. I to 6 we can see that the lower part of some of the peripheral side walls of the tiles 10,20,30,40 and 50 are provided with a tongue 22 and the bottom base of the thea are provided with corresponding grooves 21w that two or more tiles can be frictionally and removably intedodced to form an unlimited number of patterns such as the patterns shown in FIGS.7 to 15.
Preferably the tongues 22 are provided on the convex peripheral side walls 12 and the corresponding grooves 21 are formed on the bottom base 19 of the concave peripheral side walls 11, but the tongues 22 and grooves 21 can be formed in both concave or convex peripheral side walls.
The bottom base 19 of the peripheral side walls can be provided with one or more grooves 21 so that the tiles can be connected from different positions one to another.
The tiles of the present invention are shaped and configured so that tongues and corresponding grooves are hidden by the upper part of the tiles when two or more tiles are connected to each other, therefore making the patterns coherent and regular.
The corners of the tiles of the present invention can be as well, formed with tongues or grooves.
The tongues and corresponding grooves can be formed having the shapes shown in FIGS.16 to 18 or could be formed from any other shape.
