Abstract

A ground source heat pump arrangement has a compost store as a source of heat, and the heat pump provides heat for space heating and/or a hot water supply. The compost store is arranged to supply heat in addition to an underground heat source provided by a flexible pipework through which a water and antifreeze solution flows. The compost store enclosure may be constructed of a concrete block base 7 and end-panel, a timber planks (19 fig 4) end-panel retained by corner support sections (18 fig 3), and side panels 9 of rigid plastics material retained by struts (10 fig 3). The side panels may include a plurality of holes 11 which provide ventilation for the enclosed composting material. The compost enclosure may also include an insulated hinged concrete lid 12, fitted with dampers (13 fig 1) to assist in both opening and closing. The water and antifreeze solution may be transported in close proximity to the compost via serpentine conduits (16 fig 2), 17, arranged in the lid and the base, and adjacent the side panels.
