Abstract

A mortar joint gauge comprises a gauging rod <B>3</B> which is slidably mounted in a bracket <B>1</B> which also forms a clamp suitable for a spirit level. The gauging rod <B>3</B> is inserted in a threaded rod <B>2</B> having a longitudinal bore and carrying a first bracket part <B>1a</B>. The threaded rod <B>2</B> is inserted in a second bracket part <B>1</B> and a wing nut <B>5</B> provided to clamp the two clamp parts <B>1a, 1</B> around a spirit level. A thumb screw <B>4</B> is provided to clamp the gauging rod in position within the threaded rod.

Description
The tool is called a Mortar Joint Gauge and it is pacifically used to measure the depth of the horizontal bed joint on brick and masonry work.
The device is a adjustable gauging rod that slides through a camp that is attached to a spirit level The way the tool works is by measuring the material to be laid say a brick 65mm plus a joint 10mm total 75mm measure 75mm from the inside of the bottom clamp (Ia) to the bottom of the adjustable gauging rod (3) tighten the gauging rod in position with the thwnb screw (4) then attach the MJG to the spirit level by tightening the clamp (1) with the wing nut (5)the hollow tube (2) that the gauging rod (3) slides through is secured to the clamp piece (la) and slides through clamp piece (1) When the mortar is spread for the first course of bricks and a brick is set on the mortar the gauging rod (3) is placed on the foundation with the spirit level over the new course of bricks when the bubble shows level there will be a 10mm mortar bed joint when this process is repeated as the wall is built and all bed joints will be the same 10mm
