Abstract
A packaging carton has a frontal opening for removing items from the carton, and a sliding member having a portion 21 locatable behind items in the carton and an elongate handle 27. The sliding member is slidable forwardly in the carton for moving the items forwardly, e.g. by pulling the handle 27 through a slit 17. A set of blanks for forming the carton is disclosed. The purpose of the sliding member is to bring items in the carton forward to the front of the carton to improve their visibility and accessibility. The handle 27 may extend through a hole 17 in the front wall of the carton, and bear graduations for indicating the number of items remaining in the carton. The graduations on the handle 27 may be perforated, such that they can be torn off after use.
Description
CARTON AND BLANKS THEREFOR
[0001]This invention relates to a packaging carton and to a set of blanks for forming the carton.
[0002] It is known to provide a paperboard carton for storing and transporting items, e.g. packaged food or household products, the carton having a removable portion such that the items can be removed from the carton when it is placed on display on a shelf in a store.
[0003] After products are removed from the front of the carton, it is often desirable to move the remaining products forward to improve their visibility and accessibility. This action may be required several times a day and is labour intensive.
[0004] With the aim of alleviating this disadvantage, the invention provides a packaging carton having a frontal opening for removing items from the carton, and a sliding member having a portion locatable behind items in the carton and a handle, the sliding member being slidable forwardly in the carton for moving the items forwardly.
[0005]In an embodiment of the invention, the handle extends forwardly of the front of the carton. It may in particular extend through a hole in a front wall of the carton. It may extend along a bottom wall of the carton, the hole being located at the bottom of said front wall. The sliding member may be formed from stiff but foldable board material, the handle being formed as an elongate part. The handle may bear graduations for indicating the number of items remaining in the carton. Said portion of the sliding member may have a width substantially equal to that of the carton. The sliding member may have wings for extending on either side of the items.
[0006]The invention also provides a set of blanks of stiff but foldable board material for forming a packaging carton, comprising a carton blank including * 2 panels for forming side, top, base, front and rear walls of the carton and having a removable portion for forming a frontal opening in the carton; and a sliding member blank including a portion for locating behind items contained in the carton and a handle part.
[0007] The carton blank may be formed with a hole in the front wall panel configured to admit the handle part. The panels for forming the base of the carton may be formed such that the interior of the base is smooth.
[0008]Said portion of the sliding member blank may have a width substantially equal to that of the carton. The sliding member blank may have wings for extending on either side of the items.
[0009] The handle part may be formed as an elongate part extending centrally at the bottom of said portion and may bear graduations for indicating the number of items remaining in the carton.
[0010]A particular embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: [001 1]Figure I is a plan of a carton blank according to the invention; [0012] Figure 2 is a plan of a sliding member blank; [0013] Figure 3 shows a sliding member formed from the blank of Figure 2; [0014] Figure 4 shows a carton formed from the blank of Figure 1; and [0015] Figure 5 is a schematic view showing the sliding member inside the carton.
[0016]Figure I shows the "inside" of a blank of stiff but foldable material such as double-faced corrugated paperboard. The blank has a series of panels joined in a series at fold lines, namely a right side panel 1, a front panel 2, a left side panel 3 and a rear panel 4. A tab 5 is provided at one end of the series. Top flaps 6, 7, 8 9 and bottom flaps 10, 11, 12, 13 depends from each of panels 1, 2, 3, 4 respectively.
[0017] An openable part of the eventual carton is defined by a perforated line 14 running across each of right and left top flaps 6, 8 and into each of right and left side panels 1, 3 as well as cut lines 15 extending obliquely across the right and left side panels and across front panel 2. A finger hole 16 is formed where the cut line 14 extends across front panel 2.
[0018]A horizontal slit 17 is formed centrally at the bottom of the front panel 2.
[0019] Figure 2 shows the "inside" of a sliding member blank. The blank has a rear panel 21, formed with dog-leg cuts 22, and a base panel 23 depending from the rear panel at a fold line. Side flaps 24 extend on either side of the base panel 23 and a rear tab 25, formed with an ear 26, extends from each side flap 24.
[0020] An elongate handle 27 extends from the free edge of the base panel 23 and is marked with graduations 28 at regular intervals.
[0021]In order to form the sliding member, the rear panel 21 and side flaps 24 are folded upwardly through right angles. The rear tabs 25 are then folded forwardly and the ears 26 are tucked into the cuts 22. The sliding member then appears as shown in Figure 3.
[0022] In order to form the carton from the blank of Figure 1, the panels 1, 2,3, 4 are folded to form a tube, and the tab 5 is attached, e.g. by gluing, to the rear panel 4. The bottom flaps 10, 11, 12, 13 are folded upwardly and attached together to form a base of the carton. Remarkably, the shorter front and rear bottom flaps 11, 13 are attached to the outside of the longer side bottom flaps 10,12.
[0023] The sliding member is inserted into the carton with the base panel 23 at the rear of the carton and the free end of the handle 27 just protruding through the slit 17. Products are then placed in the carton and the top flaps 6, 7, 8, 9 are folded and sealed.
[0024]Figure 5 is a schematic view showing the sliding member inside the closed carton. The filled and sealed carton is placed on a shelf and the openable part is removed by using the finger hole 16 and pulling to tear along the perforated lines 14. Products can then be removed one by one through the opening so formed.
[0025] In order to tidy the remaining products and move them forwards, the handle 27 is pulled through the slit 17 so that the rear panel 21 of the sliding member moves the products forwards.
[0026]The uppermost one of the right and left bottom flaps 10, 12, provides a smooth internal base of the carton. This avoids snagging and provides a clear passage for the base panel 23 of the sliding member.
(0027]The graduations 28 can be numbered to provide an indication of the number of products remaining in the carton. The free end of the handle 27 can be torn off after use, the graduations optionally being perforated. The free end can alternatively be folded and tucked in under the bottom of the carton. It is also possible to push the handle back into the carton and replenish a rear part of the carton.
[0028] The carton of the invention is suitable as an outer package for cartons, sachets, bottles, bags, blister packs etc. * 5
