Description

APPARATUS FOR CONTROWNG ENTRY OF
A DELIVERY VEHICLE TO A DELIVERY SITE
This invention relates to apparatus for controlling entry of a delivery vehicle to a delivery site.
When a delivery vehicle delivers to a delivery site, it is usually necessary for a driver of the delivery vehicle to report to security personnel at an entrance to the site. The driver is then required to give various details prior to being allowed access to the site to deliver the goods. The details required may relate to the goods being delivered to the site and/or details of the delivery firm. The time taken for the driver to get out of the cab of the delivery vehicle, walk to the security office, possibly queue to see a security person, complete necessary paperwork, return to the vehicle and drive onto the site, for example through a barrier, can occupy appreciable time, for example several minutes. In many large sites, security personnel have to allocate a specific bay for the vehicle, and direct the driver of the vehicle to the bay. The specffic bay may be determined by the goods being carried by the vehicle and/or the place in a building where the goods need to be handled or stored. This bay allocation and vehicle direction occupy further time.
Where the number of vehicles to a site is high, the time required by all of the vehicles becomes substantial and commercially unacceptable.
It is an aim of the present invention to reduce the above mentioned problem.
Accordingly, in one non-limiting embodiment of the present invention there is provided apparatus for controlling entry of a delivery vehicle to a delivery site, which apparatus comprises: (i) first reader means which is positioned at a loading site, which reads a radio frequency identification tag fitted to the delivery vehicle, which provides information on goods to be delivered by the delivery vehicle, and which transmits the information for use at the delivery site; (ii) memory means which receives the information from the first reader means; (iii) second reader means which is positioned at the delivery site and which reads the radio frequency identification tag when it arrives with the delivery vehicle; (iv) verification means for verifying the information which is in the memory means and which is from the first reader means with the information from the second reader means; and (v) entry means which is operated to permit entry of the delivery vehicle to the delivery site consequent upon the verification means obtaining a required verification.
When compared with the above mentioned existing systems of* admitting delivery vehicles to delivery sites, the apparatus of the present invention is able to speed up substantially the entry of the delivery vehicles to delivery sites.
The radio frequency identification tag may be fitted to any suitable and appropriate place on the delivery vehicle. Thus, for example, if the delivery vehicle is a tractor unit and a trailer, then the radio frequency identification tag may be fitted to the tractor unit of the delivery vehicle, or the trailer of the delivery vehicle. The delivery vehicle may be a truck with an integral truck body. The radio frequency identification tag may be fitted to a body of the delivery vehicle or to a chassis of the delivery vehicle. The radio frequency identification tag may be positioned in the driving cab of the delivery vehicle.
Preferably, the apparatus is one in which the memory means is located at the delivery site. The memory means may however be located elsewhere if desired, for example at a central control station remote from the delivery site.
The entry means may be at least one of a barrier, traffic lights, or flashing beacons. Generally, any suitable and appropriate type of entry means may be employed.
The apparatus may include a first touch screen for enabling operation of various site-specific functions. For example, the first touch screen may be operated by a driver of the delivery vehicle and/or security personnel at the delivery site. The site-specific functions may relate to access requirements, customer requirements, or site-operating requirements.
The first touch screen may enable a manual override of the entry means. This facility may be employed, for example, if the information from the first reader means has not been received by the memory means at the time of arrival of the delivery vehicle to the delivery site.
The apparatus of the invention may be one in which the first touch screen is provided in an installation and at a height and position which enable a driver of the delivery vehicle to access the first touch screen without getting out of the delivery vehicle.
The installation may be in a separate kiosk at the delivery site.
Alternatively, the installation may be in a security office at the delivery site.
Generally the installation can be of any design and at any suitable and appropriate position.
The memory means and the verification means may be in the installation. The memory means and the verification means may form part of the same piece of equipment.
Any suitable and appropriate memory means may be employed. Thus, for example, the memory means may be a computer, for example a desk top computer. Any suitable and appropriate verification means may be employed.
Thus, for example, the verification means may be a comparator device.
Any suitable and appropriate radio frequency identification tag may be employed. Radio frequency identification tags of various designs are known.
Two or more of the radio frequency identification means may be employed on the delivery vehicle.
The apparatus of the invention may include a second touch screen which is under the control of security personnel at the delivery site, and which is in communication with the first touch screen and/or is able to override commands from the first touch screen. The provision of the second touch screen enables the security personnel to have overall control of the apparatus. Thus, for example, the security personnel can instruct the driver of the delivery vehicle simply by using touch screen commands on the second touch screen to give the driver instructions on the second touch screen.
Alternatively, the security personnel can simply override information input by a driver of the delivery vehicle on the first touch screen. This facility helps to ensure that a driver not able to input the appropriate information into the first touch screen does not hold up entry of the delivery vehicle, and also the entry of other delivery vehicles that might be waiting.
The apparatus may be one in which the second touch screen enables a manual override of the entry means.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described solely by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawing which shows apparatus for controlling entry of a delivery vehicle to a delivery site.
Referring to the drawing, there is shown apparatus 2 for controlling entry of a delivery vehicle 4 to a delivery site 6. The apparatus 2 comprises first reader means 8 which is positioned at a loading site 10. The first reader means 8 reads a radio frequency identification tag 12 providing information on goods to be delivered by the delivery vehicle 4. The first reader means 8 transmits the information for use at the delivery site 6. The journey of the delivery vehicle 4 from the loading site 10 to the delivery site 6 is shown schematically by a broken line 14.
The apparatus 2 further comprises memory means 16 which receives information from the first reader means 8. The first reader means 8 sends the information to the memory means 16 as radio frequency information. The memory means 16 has an appropriate receiving device for receiving the transmitted information.
The apparatus 2 further comprises second reader means 18 which is positioned at the delivery site 6. The second reader means 18 reads the tag 12 when the tag 12 arrives with the delivery vehicle 4.
The apparatus 2 further comprises verification means 20 for verifying the information which is in the memory means 16 and which is from the first reader means 8, with information from the second reader means 18.
The apparatus 2 further comprises entry means 22 which is operated to permit entry of the delivery vehicle 4 to the delivery site 6 consequent upon the verification means 20 obtaining a required verification.
As shown in the drawing, the delivery vehicle 4is provided with two of the tags 12. More specifically, the delivery vehicle 4 has a tractor unit 24 and a trailer 26. There is one of the tags 12 on the tractor unit 24, and there is one of the tags 12 on the trailer 26. In alternative embodiments of the invention, just one of the tags 12 could be employed. The delivery vehicle 4 could be a truck with an integral truck body, in which case one or more tags 12 could be fitted wherever desired on the truck, for example in the driving cab and/or the truck body.
The entry means 22 is shown as a barrier which may raise under the control of the verification means when the required verification has been obtained.
The apparatus 2 includes a first touch screen 28 for enabling operation of various site-specific functions. The first touch screen 28 is normally for operation by a driver of the delivery vehicle 4, but the first touch screen 28 may also be operated by security personnel at the delivery site 6. The first touch screen 28 may be operated to cause a manual override of the entry means 22, for example if information from the first reader means 8 has not been received by the memory means 16 at the time of arrival of the delivery vehicle 4 to the delivery site 6. The first touch screen 28 may show a series of instructions or commands which the driver of the delivery vehicle 4 has to comply with or answer prior to the entry means 22 opening.
The first touch screen 28 and the second reader means 18 are provided in an installation in the form of a separate kiosk 30 at the delivery site 6. The first touch screen 28 is arranged in the kiosk at a height and position which enables the driver of the delivery vehicle to access the first touch screen 28 without getting out of the delivery vehicle. For ease of illustration, the delivery vehicle 4 is shown as a left hand drive delivery vehicle 4.
The apparatus 2 includes a second touch screen 32 which is under the control of security staff at the delivery site 6, and which is installed in a security office 34. The second touch screen 32 is in communication with the first touch screen 28 and/or is able to override commands from the first touch screen 28. Thus security staff in the security office 34 are able to send instructions from the second touch screen 32 to the first touch screen 28 for the driver of the delivery vehicle 4. If necessary, security personnel/staff in the security office 34 are able to use the second touch screen 32 to override data input into the first touch screen 28 by the driver of the delivery vehicle 2.
The first and second toUch screens 28, 32 may be associated with appropriate computer means for enabling the first and second touch screens 28, 32 to operate as stated.
When the barrier is raised, the delivery vehicle 4 is able to drive to one of the illustrated bays 36 in the delivery site 6. The first touch screen 28 may instruct the driver of the delivery vehicle 4 as to which specific bay 36 to drive to. The chosen bay 36 may depend upon the goods being carried by the delivery vehicle 4 and/or where in a building 38 the goods are required.
All delivery vehicle entry times at the delivery site 6 are able to be logged to a database for reporting purposes.
The delivery vehicle 4 is able to gain access to the delivery site 6 in an easy, speedy and efficient manner. A subsequent waiting delivery vehicle 40 having tags 12 only has to wait a minimum time.
It is to be appreciated that the embodiment of the invention described above with reference to the accompanying drawing has been given by way of example only and that modifications may be effected. Thus, for example, the delivery vehicles 4, 40 may come from different loading sites 10. Any suitable and appropriate transmitter and receiver means may be employed for transmitting and receiving the data from the reader means to the memory means and the verification means. As an alternative to the entry means being a barrier, it may alternatively be, for example, traffic lights or flashing beacons. The first touch screen 28 may operate in a simplified manner if desired and may simply require the driver of the delivery vehicle 4 to acknowledge a touch screen button in order to cause automatic operation of the entry means 22. Appropriate information from the radio frequency identification tag or tags can be stored and used as required.
