Abstract

A method, device and arrangement for the verification of a signal input to the electronic taximeter 1 of a vehicle as supplied by a distance pulse sensor 2 by comparison with the vehicles velocity and acceleration as provided by an external accelerometer. Such verification is performed by the taximeter's microcontroller 4 in conjunction with its internal clock 5 and may be used to detect and prevent falsification of the distance pulse signal and also to detect malfunction of the distance pulse sensor; either of these conditions may be subsequently acted upon by the taximeter's microcontroller. A malfunction of the distance pulse sensor 2 may be as a result of fraudulent activity and so upon detection of said malfunction, a visible or audible alarm may be raised, and/or the taximeter may function with limited functionality.

Description

Description of the invent km
This invention relates to the detection of fraudulent use of an electronic taximeter by continuous comparison of the vehicle's apparent acceleration as calculated using the vehicle's distance pulse sensor with the vehicle's actual acceleration as measured by a dedicated accelerometer.
In a vehicle fitted with an electronic taximeter, the distance pulse sensor enables the taximeter to measure the distance travelled by said vehicle.
The taximeter's internal clock enables the elapsed time to be measured.
The apparent velocity of the vehicle is computed on the basis of the distance travelled by the vehicle and the elapsed time.
The apparent acceleration of the vehicle is computed on the basis of the rate of change of the vehicle's apparent velocity.
Comparison is made of the vehicle's apparent acceleration with measurements of the vehicle's actual acceleration as supplied by a dedicated accelerometer.
As a result of said comparison, deviation from an allowable range of threshold values may be interpreted as either falsification of the distance pulse signal or failure of the distance pulse sensor.
Subsequently the taximeter's microcontroller may act upon this indication in any manner desired, which may include the raising of a visible or audible alarm, the addition of an entry to the taximeter's internal event logging system or the changing of the taximeter's charging scheme such as charging by waiting time, causing the taximeter to stop functioning or other similar means of discouraging potentially fraudulent activity.

Claims (10)

  1. Claims 1. Falsification of the distance pulse signal may be detected and acted upon.
  2. 2. Malfunction of the distance pulse signal may be detected and acted upon.
  3. 3. Any of the many commercially-available accelerometers may be used to communicate acceleration measurements to the taximeter's microcontroller.
  4. 4. The accelerometer may be implemented as an integrated circuit (micro-machined) type assembled onto the taximeter's printed circuit board within the taximeter or as a type fitted external to the taximeter.
  5. 5. The rate of change of velocity, represented by the rate of change of distance pulse frequency will relate to changes in acceleration measurements; this relationship may be calculated by mathematical differentiation techniques or more simply by software lookup
    table.
  6. 6. Fraudulent distance pulse signals may be detected by the taximeter's microcontroller by comparing the vehicle's apparent velocity and acceleration as indicated by the distance pulse sensor with the vehicle's actual velocity and acceleration as indicated by the accelerometer whereupon the microcontroller may act upon the detected condition.
  7. 7. Malfunction of the distance pulse sensor may be detected by the taximeter's microcontroller by comparing the vehicle's apparent velocity and acceleration as indicated by the distance pulse sensor with the vehicle's actual velocity and acceleration as indicated by the accelerometer whereupon the microcontroller may act upon the detected condition.
  8. 8. A detected potentially fraudulent condition may be acted upon by the taximeter's microcontroller either immediately or after a number of similar conditions have been counted and may include the raising of a visible or audible alarm, the display of a suitable message on the taximeter's user interface, the addition of an entry to the taximeter's internal event logging system, the changing of the taximeter's charging scheme such as charging by waiting time only, causing the taximeter to stop functioning or to function with restricted functionality or communicating through any of the taximeter's interfaces.
  9. 9. The distance pulse signal input to the taximeter may be generated by a transducer in the vehicle and communicated to the taximeter by any means.
  10. 10. The described method for the detection and prevention of fraudulent distance pulses may also be applied to a vehicle Tachograph.
