Abstract
A leg/foot support 10 comprises a plurality of cushion parts 11, 12, 13 which can be assembled in either a side by side single layer configuration or in a multi-layer stacked configuration (see figure 4), both configurations providing a sloped upper surface for the support of the legs/feet. The members 11, 12, 13 may be wedge-shaped parts and pivotally interconnected 26, 27 so that they fold relative to each other. The parts may be secured together in their two configurations by zips, tapes or other fasteners which may be provided on loose covers. The parts may be made of foam, may be inflatable or they may be hollow to provide storage or travel bags.
Description
hue Uectual D Property Office Fc mi AppilLatlon No GB()7 8509 RrI'M I)aie 7 November 2007 The following terms are registered trademarks and should he read as such wherever they occur in this document: Velcro UK Intellectual Property Office is an operating name of the Patent Office dt LEG/FOOT SUPPORTS This invention relates to leg/foot supports for supporting a user's legs/feet in an elevated position.
It is well know to use such supports for elevating the legs/feet to alleviate, for example swelling of the legs or feet during pregnancy, poor circulation and varicous veins etc. It is an object of the present invention to provide a cheap and convenient leg/foot support which can be used in a variety of locations.
Thus according to the present invention there is provided a leg/foot support comprising a plurality of members which can be assembled in either a side by side single layer configuration or in a multi-layer stacked configuration, both configurations providing an upper surface for the support of legs/feet.
Preferably the plurality of members are wedge-shaped and can be assembled into either a single layer sloping wedge-shaped configuration or into a stacked configuration, both configurations providing an inclined upper surface for the support of legs/feet.
Conveniently the wedge-shaped members may be pivotally interconnected so that they fold relative to each other as they are moved between the two configurations.
Alternatively, the wedge-shaped members may be secured together in their two configurations by zips, Velcro type fasteners or tapes.
Conveniently the wedge-shaped members are formed from foam material.
Alternatively the wedge-shaped members are inflatable to allow easy storage and transportation. Such an arrangement is particularly useful for taking on holiday etc as it is easily transported.
When the wedge-shaped members are pivotally interconnected the wedge-shaped members may have removeable covers which are interconnected along one edge to provide the pivotable connection.
In a further form of the invention, the wedge-shaped members may comprise individual wedge-shaped travelling bags or suitcases which can be assembled into the two configurations. Such a construction is particularly suitable for holiday or business travel use.
The wedge-shaped members could alternatively be provided as individual wedge-shaped storage boxes with cushioned surfaces for the legs/feet which can be assembled into the two configurations.
Alternatively, the wedge-shaped members may comprise individual wedge-shaped open sided frames with cushioned surfaces for the legs/feet which can be assembled into the two configurations.
The invention also provides a leg/foot support which provides an upper surface which slopes towards a user for the support of the user's legs/feet.
The present invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:-Figure 1 shows a perspective view of a leg/foot support in accordance with the present invention in its sloping wedge-shaped configuration; Figure 2 shows the leg/foot support in the configuration of figure 1 used by the user lying on a bed; Figure 3 shows the leg/foot support of figure 1 used by a user sitting on a settee; Figure 4 shows the leg/foot support of the present invention in its stacked configuration used by a user sitting on a settee, and Figure 5 show the leg/foot support being folded between the Figure 1 and Figure 4 positions.
Referring to the drawings, a leg/foot support 10 comprises a number of individual wedge shaped members 11,12 and 13 which can be assembled in a sloping wedge-shaped configuration as shown in Figure 1 in which the wedge shaped members abut each other to produce a continuous sloping upper surface 14 on which a user can rest their legs/feet as shown in Figures 2 and 3.
Figure 2 shows the leg/foot support used on a bed 15 with a user 16 having their legs 17 inclined upwardly resting on the upper surface 14 of the support 10.
The leg/foot support has many other applications when in the Figure 1 configuration.
For example, a user 18, as shown in Figure 3, can position the support lOon a settee 19 so that the user's back can lean against one of the arms 20 of the settee whilst the legs 21 are again supported in an inclined elevated position along the upper surface 14 of the support 10.
The wedge-shaped members 11, 12, and 13 are shaped so that they can alternatively be assembled in a stacked configuration as shown in Figure 4. When in this configuration the stack has an upper inclined surface 22 which, as shown in Figure 4, slopes towards a user 24 and can be used to support the legs 23 of the user 24 whilst sitting on, for example, a settee 25.
Whilst the wedge-shaped support members 11,12 and 13 may be separate from each other and simply placed in the alternative configurations shown in Figures 1 and 4, the wedge-shaped members can be pivotally connected to each other so as to pivot about effective axes 26 and 27 shown in Figures 1 and 4. This pivotal interconnection of the wedge-shaped members 11, 12 and 13 can most conveniently be provided by lose covers on the members 11, 12, and 13 which are interconnected along edges lla,12a andl2b,13b as best seen in figure 5 which shows the three wedge-shaped members being folded between the Figure 1 and Figure 4 positions.
In a typical arrangement each wedge-shaped member has a width W of say l6inches, a depth D of say 13 inches. The heights E, F, G and H of the members as shown in Figure 1 are typically 1.5, 5.5, 75 and 10 inches respectively.
Also, although the invention has been described above in relation to a support having three wedge-shaped members, it will be appreciated that other numbers of wedge-shaped members may be used if desired.
The wedge-shaped support members can be conveniently manufactured from a medium density foam material so that they retain their shape when supporting the user's legs but at the same time provide some cushioning effect.
Alternatively the wedge-shaped support members could be inflatable thus allowing the leg/foot support to be easily stored and transported which makes the leg/foot support particularly suitable for use on holiday to alleviate any leg/foot condition from which the user may be suffering.
In a yet further form of the invention, the wedge-shaped support members are provided as wedge-shaped travelling bags or suitcases in which the users belongings can be transported and which can be assembled into the two configurations.
The wedge shaped members could also be provided as storage boxes, for example moulded from plastics material, with one or more opening flaps for access to goods stored in the boxes In such an arrangement the boxes can be provided with suitable cushioned surfaces for the support of the legs/feet.
In a yet further alternative construction, the wedge shaped members could be provided as open sided frames made from wood, metal or plastics material with suitable cushioning for the legs/feet.
As will be appreciated from the above, the present invention thus provides a leg/foot support which is of a simple construction and which is relatively cheap to manufacture and convenient to use in a variety of different locations.
