Abstract
245,307. Armstrong, J. J. V., (Union Special Machine Co.). Feb. 26, 1925. Sack-sewing machines. - The sewing-head is mounted to be traversed on a bracket arm extending from a standard and means are provided for automatically reversing its motion after sewing up a sack so as to bring it back to the starting point. The motor is mounted independently of the sewing head and is stationary. A sleeve 3 slidable on a column 1 carries a bracket 12 from which project tracks 39, 40. The sleeve and bracket are counter-balanced by a weight 5 the connecting cord 6 making several turns round a pulley 7 which may be rotated by a hand-wheel 11 to raise and lower the sleeve. A screw-threaded shaft 18 is mcunted between the tracks 39, 40 and is driven in alternative directions by a motor 13 mounted in the bracket 12 and having a pulley 14 over which pass direct and crossed belts 15, 16. These belts run over pulleys 17, 19, freely rotatable on the shaft 18 and arranged to be alternatively clutched to discs 22, 23 fast on the shaft, the requisite movement of the pulleys being effected by a yoke 24 operated by an arm 25 stressed by a spring 30 to move the pulley 19 normally into engagement with the disc 23. A flexible connection 31 is attached to the arm 25 and is operated by a treadle 34 to move the pulley 18 into engagement with the disc 22. A rod 28 carrying stops is connected to the arm 25. The sewing-head, which is of known construction, is mounted on a truck having four wheels 48 and a depending lug 59 with a threaded orifice 60 which engages the thread of the shaft 18. A pulley 65 for driving the sewing mechanism is mounted in a recess 61 in the lug 59 and is driven in one direction only, through a roll clutch 71 operated by a sleeve 62 splined to the shaft 18. The sleeve is held in position by a nut 64 which abuts against a hub portion 66 of the sleeve. A belt 73 passes over the pulley 65 and over a driving pulley on the sewing head. The sewing-head is moved outwards from the column to stitch a sack unti a stop 78 on the carriage engages a stop on the rod 28 to move the rod in a direction to shift the clutch mechanism and reverse the rotation of the shaft 18 so that the sewing-head is returned to starting position.
