Abstract

There is provided a corner protector 12 for glazing units comprising two arms 14, 16 permanently fixed to each other at substantially 90 degrees, wherein each arm tapers in thickness along its length to provide an integral wedge. Each arm 14, 16 comprises two arm portions 14a, 14b: 16a, 16b joined laterally by one or more deflectable webs 20. The webs allow the spacing of the arm portions to vary to accommodate variations in thickness of individual units.

Description

1 2452926 Title: Corner Protector for glazing units
Field of the Invention
The invention relates to a corner protector for glazing units, such as sealed double-glazing units.
Background to the invention
Rigid corner protectors are used to protect the corners of glazing units both from damage and from causing damage. In a simple form, they can be rigid plastic triangular pockets which loosely grip the corners of the unit. The corner protectors often come loose in transit so allowing the units to become damaged. Some corner protectors rely on springs to provide a tighter grip, but this adds considerably to the cost which for a disposable item of packaging is undesirable.
It is an aim of the present invention to provide a corner protector that protects the corners of glazed units adequatel)i and also assists in installation of glazed units into frames.
Summary of the invention
In accordance with the invention, there is provided a corner protector for glazing units comprising two arms permanently fixed to each other at substantially 90 degrees, wherein each arm tapers in thickness along its length to provide an integral wedge. The corner protector can be fixed to glazing units, such as sealed double-glazing units, to provide protection during transit and so stop the corners of the units from being damaged and to stop the corners of the units scratching objects such as other units. The integral wedge is of particular advantage as it ensures that the corner protector can not only provide protection during transit but also forms part of the packing needed to ensure the glazing unit sits within a frame. The corner protector according to the present invention thus provides a useful function both before and during installation of the unit in a frame.
Preferably each arm tapers along its outermost face from one end to where the arms jo in each other, the wedge being thicker near the join.
Depending from the sides of each arm is one or more protrusions. These assist in locating the arms around the corners of glazing units, also assisting the arms to grip the unit, and provide a protective edge for the case of the unit, acting as a lateral spacer when units are stacked together.
Each arm may comprise two arm portions joined laterally by one or more deflectable webs.
The webs allow the spacing of the arm portions to vary to accommodate variations in thickness of individual units, such as those that result from manufacturing tolerances and from including additional layers, such as lamination, in some units. This ability to vary spacing is particularly useful when the corner protector incorporates the feature of the protrusions.
Preferably the outermost face of each arm has a plurality of serrations. These serrations engage with a frame and packing wedges when the units are being installed.
The innermost and outermost faces of the arms may be provided with one or more t-shaped barbs, ribs or other protruding features as required to assist with fixing to the unit or a frame into which the unit is to be installed.
The corner protector will typically be manufactured in one piece from plastics material, such as polypropylene or other rigid plastics material.
The invention also lies in a glazed unit to which are fixed four corner protectors as aforesaid.
The invention will now be described by way of example, and with reference to the accompanying drawings in which; Figure 1 is a perspective view of a glazing unit with corner protectors in accordance with the present invention; Figure 2 is a perspective view of a corner protector; Figure 3 is a cross section through an arm of the corner protector; and Figure 4 is a perspective view of an installed glazing unit.
Description
Figure 1 shows a sealed double-glazing unit 10, such as installed in door and window frames. Four corner protectors 12, 12', 12", 12" are permanently fixed to the corners of the unit to prevent the corners becoming damaged, or causing damage to other objects, during transit. The protectors project beyond the side of the unit and so act as a spacer when units arc stacked on top of each other, avoiding the use of foam spacer pads, the marks from which can be difficult to remove off glazing. The corner protectors have a wedged-shaped profile, see Figure 3, which is of advantage for installation of the glazed unit as will be discussed in relation to Figure 4.
The corner protectors 12 are generally permanently fixed into position during manufacture of the unit, either by adhering them to a secondary seal running around the edges of the unit or by embedding them into the secondary seal as it is applied during manufacture. The corner protectors 12 are moulded as one piece from rigid plastics material, such as polypropylene, and are compatible with the sealant, which is typically polyurethane or silicone.
A corner protector 12 is shown in detail in Figures 2 and 3. The L-shaped protector comprises two arms 14, 16 permanently joined at substantially 90 degrees, each arm comprising two portions 14a, 14b; 16a, 16b joined together by five webs 20 which allow a small amount of relative lateral movement of the arm portions to accommodate varying unit thickness, such as can arise from variations in manufacturing tolerance. Each arm 14, 16 tapers in thickness, giving a wedge-shaped edge with the thickest part of the wedge where the arms join, see Figure 3. Each arm 14, 16 is around 9 mm long, with a width of around 24 mm, dependent on the extension of the webs 20. The outermost face 22 of each arm has a number of tooth-shaped serrations 24 at a pitch of one every 1.5 mm. Three protrusions 26 depend from the side of each arm portion and in combination with the innermost face 28 of the arms 14, 16 defme a channel in which the glazing unit sits centrally and is gripped by the protrusions 26. If required, the protrusions 26 allow less permanent fixing of the corner protectors 12. Thus instead of adhering or embedding the corner protectors during manufacture of the unit, the protrusions can instead be relied on to firmly and securely grip the unit.
Whilst not shown in Figures 2 or 3, as required barbs can be placed on the innermost face to assist with adhesion of the protector to the unit. Barbs, hooks or touch and close fasteners of the filamentary hook and eye kind can be moulded into the outermost face to assist with location of the unit in a frame.
In general when a sealed double-glazed unit is installed into a frame, wedges and packers are used to centralise the sealed unit in the frame, provide a drainage path and provide rigidity to the frame. Building standards set out the appropriate way to pack a given type and size of unit for a given frame. The packers are loose elements and it can be difficult to manipulate the packers, wedges and glazing unit, given the packers and wedges will have a tendency to fall out of the frame during the installation process: this is particularly so when using a corner packer in combination with a separate wedge.
Installation of a sealed Unit with permanently attached corner protectors in accordance with the present invention is simpler. As shown in Figure 1, the unit has four corner protectors 12 fixed to it, each protector having a wedge-shaped profile as shown in Figure 3. The unit 10 is placed in a frame 30 and to provide a quick fix, one only need engage wedge packers 32 with one or more corner protectors 12 which are fixed in relation to the unit. The installation is then completed in the usual way by addition of complementary pairs of wedge packers 32', 32" where necessary.
The corner protectors of the present invention thus provide protection and act as spacers during transit, and due to their wedge-shaped profile are usable in installation of the glazing.
With prior art corner protectors, the protectors have to be placed onto the unit, sometimes fixed in place, then removed prior to installation and separate packers used to position and secure the glazed unit in the frame. This requires a number of manual steps. The number of manual steps required is reduced with the corner protectors of the present invention which once securely fixed to the glazed unit remains in place permanently and is a component of the installation process. -
