Abstract
An angling net, preferably in the form of a landing net, comprises a cross-sectional net support shape and a locking assembly for attaching a knuckle 2 to a shaft 1. Typically, the angling net has a diamond-shaped cross-section (3a, Figure 4). The net may comprise a net rim 3 formed from an aluminium alloy, which supports a net 5. The knuckles may be injection moulded and may be manufactured from a composite nylon glass toughened resin. Preferably, the angling net has no sharp edges.
Description
I 2452621 Improved Landing Net The invention relates to landing nets that are mainly used by Angler's for netting fish caught using a rod and line.
Landing nets of this type are well known and generally comprise of a shaft with a rim to support a net at one end and a handle at the other end. Some have a pivot for folding the angling nets when not in use and others have a sliding shaft system.
There are various disadvantages and/or problems associated with conventional landing nets including: (a) Weak strength-to-weight. ratio requiring a heavier section of material that puts excessive pressure on the angler's wrist.
(b) Tapered net bags that cause damage to the scales of the fish inducing excessive stress on the fish.
(c) They have fixings fitted with nuts and bolts and/or other types of fixings that can cause the net bag to become snagged rendering the net unusable to land the fish.
(d) They require to be manufactured with excessive machining operations to create the locking assemblies thus increasing costs and parts.
The invention provides novel landing nets containing various inventive features to overcome all of the above disadvantages.
The invention provides landing nets that have a unique cross-sectional shape of the net support to overcome the weak strength-to-weight ratio.
The invention provides preferably but not restricted to a knotless pan-based net to overcome the damage and stress caused to fish when they are returned to water.
The invention provides preferably but not restricted to a fully fixed assembly using the unique shapes of the extrusions into preferably moulded knuckles removing all conventional fixings.
The invention provides a unique one-part only locking assembly to overcome the excessive manufacturing operations and costs.
The material used for the net rim and shaft is preferably aluminium alloy and is selected on the basis of its mechanical strength to weight ratio.
The invention is manufactured in several variations. All of the associated joining knuckles are preferably injection moulded and manufactured from preferably a composite nylon glass toughened resin.
A referred embodiment of the invention is now described with reference to the accompanying drawing in which: Figure 1 shows a view of the Landing Net Figure 2 shows the Cross-sectional Shape of the Net Support Figure 3 shows the locking mechanism Figure 4 shows the sub-components.
Figure 5 shows the one-handed folding mechanism As shown in Figure 1 the Landing Net comprises of a shaft 1 with a rim 3 to support a net 5 at one end and a handle 4 at the other end and a knuckle 2 to lock on to the locking mechanism 6 of the shaft 2.
As shown in Figure 2 the rim comprises of a cross-sectional diamond shape 3a.
As shown in Figure 3 a tapered threaded plug 7 is inserted into the end of the shaft 2 to create the locking mechanism 6.
As shown in Figure 4 the combination of the hexagonal shape 1 the oval tube 8 and the diamond shape 3a are used in various combinations to make up the shafts and rims that fit into various knuckle shapes that make up the various landing net models.
As shown in Figure 5 the front section of the knuckle 9 and the rear section of the knuckle 10 when assembled together with a pivot pin 11 makes up the one-handed folding mechanism.
Claims (8)
1. An angling net including a cross-sectional net support shape, a locking assembly to attach a knuckle to a shaft, sub-components that that prevent net bag snagging.
2. An angling net as claimed in Claim I where a locking mechanism on the end of the slide pole creates a taper lock with one component only.
3. An angling net as claimed in Claim I where the diamond shaped extrusions create the ideal shape for cutting through the water and provides an excellent strength to weight ratio through the cross- sectional area.
4. An angling net as claimed in Claim 1 where the weight reduction provides an improved balanced product at long reach.
5. An angling net as claimed in Claim I that uses three extruded shapes to enable it to be assembled without any fixings.
6. An angling net as claimed in Claim 1 that has no sharp edges to snag the net.
7. An angling net as claimed in Claim 1 that includes a single-handed knuckle assembly.
8. An angling net substantially as herein described above and illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
