Abstract

The present invention provides an adhesive bandage 1 having a flexible base layer 2 and a wound-covering pad 4. A surface of the base layer 2 is coated with an adhesive. At least one perforation 6 or other line of separation extends from an outer edge 2c of the base layer 2 between a pair of adjacent regions 8, 10 of the base layer. When the adhesive bandage is adhered to the skin of the patient the pair of adjacent regions 8, 10 of the base layer 2 can be placed adjacent to one another as for a conventional adhesive bandage. However, if the base layer 2 is torn or cut along the perforation 6 then the pair of adjacent regions 8, 10 can be spaced apart from one another along the perforation to define two separate anchor points. The line of separation 6 may be formed by a scored or cut line as an alternative to being perforated.

Description

TITLE
Adhesive bandages
DESCRIPTION
Technical Field
The present invention relates to adhesive bandages, which are sometimes called sticking plasters.
Background Art
Adhesive bandages are a popular and widely used form of first aid dressing to cover relatively small or minor skin wounds. The adhesive bandage takes the form of a flexible base layer which is at least partially covered with a suitable adhesive to enable the base layer to be adhered to the skin of the patient and a wound-covering pad that is usually, but not always, located at a central region of the base layer. In some cases the wound-covering pad can be impregnated with an antiseptic or other medicinal agent to help prevent infection or reduce scarring. The wound-covering pad is therefore designed to protect the wound while the rest of the base layer adheres to the surrounding skin to hold the adhesive bandage in place and keep Out dirt and germs.
The base layer may be formed from any suitable material including woven or non woven fabric, a polymer material or the like and will often be elastic so that the adhesive bandage can stretch while it is adhered to the skin of the patient. The adhesive is normally covered by some sort of backing layer that is peeled away from the base layer before the adhesive bandage is applied.
Adhesive bandages are manufactured in a wide range of different shapes and sizes and even in long strips that can be cut to the desired width. It is also known to provide adhesive bandages with pre-cut notches that are specifically designed for covering wounds on knuckles and fingertips. However, by far the most common type of adhesive bandage has a substantially rectangular base layer (sometimes with rounded ends or corners) and a substantially rectangular wound-covering pad.
The inventor has found that it can be difficult to keep these substantially rectangular adhesive bandages adhered to the patient's skin for any length of time. Accordingly, the inventor believes that there is a need for improved adhesive bandages that have better adhesion properties.
Summary of the Invention
The present invention provides an adhesive bandage comprising a flexible base layer a surface of which is at least partially coated with an adhesive, wherein the base layer includes a line of separation that extends from an outer edge of the base layer between a pair of adjacent regions of the base layer such that when the adhesive bandage is adhered to the skin of a patient the pair of adjacent regions of the base layer can be placed adjacent to one another or spaced apart from one another along the line of separation.
The inventor believes that the adhesive bandage of the present invention has improved adhesion properties because each of the adjacent regions can act as a separate anchor point when spaced apart along the line of separation. Each of the adjacent regions can also be stretched or positioned to overly a suitable area of the patient's skin where it is more likely to remain adhered for a longer period of time. For example, the adjacent regions of the base layer can be spaced on either side of a raised obstruction such as a knuckle or joint. The improved adhesion properties can therefore be achieved without the use of extra strong adhesives and without increasing the surface area of the base layer.
The adhesive bandage of the present invention can be manufactured using existing methods and materials and in known shapes and sizes simply by forming a line of separation in the base layer.
The line of separation can be a cut line but will often be a perforation (i.e. a series of spaced cuts) or a score line or other line of weakness in the base layer. This is because the pair of adjacent regions will remain physically connected to one another (and hence be maintained in an adjacent relationship) if the adhesive bandage is to be used in a conventional manner.
The base layer may further include a second line of separation that extends from an outer edge of the base layer between a second pair of adjacent regions of the base layer. When the adhesive bandage is adhered to the skin of the patient the second pair of adjacent regions of the base layer can be placed adjacent to one another or spaced apart from one another along the line of separation.
The first and second lines of separation may extend from opposite edges of the base layer, adjacent or adjoining edges of the base layer, or the same edge of the base layer.
The base layer can be made of any suitable material (such as a woven or non woven fabric or a polymer material, for example) and have a single-or multi-layer construction. The base layer may be elastic.
The adhesive bandage may also include a wound-covering pad.
Drawings Figure 1 is a bottom view of an adhesive bandage according to the present invention before it is applied to the skin of a patient; Figure 2 is a top view of the adhesive bandage of Figure 1 applied like a conventional adhesive bandage; and Figure 3 is a top view of the adhesive bandage of Figure 1 applied in a different way.
Figure 1 shows an adhesive bandage I with a flexible, stretchable, planar base layer 2 made of a suitable polymer material. The base layer 2 has a pair of opposite straight edges 2a and 2b and a pair of opposite curved edges 2c and 2d. A surface of the base layer 2 is coated with a skin-contactable, pressure-sensitive adhesive. The adhesive coating is covered by a backing layer (not shown) which is peeled away from the base layer 2 before the adhesive bandage is applied. A wound-covering pad 4 is secured at the Centre of the base layer 2 by the adhesive.
A perforation 6 extends from each of the curved edges 2c and 2d towards the wound-covering pad 4. The perforations 6 extend from a central area of the curved edges 2c and 2d and are parallel with the straight edges 2a and 2b. However, it will be readily appreciated that the perforations may extend at any suitable angle relative to the straight edges 2a and 2b depending on the circumstances.
The adhesive bandage I can be used to cover a wound in two different ways. In the first way shown in Figure 2 the adhesive bandage is used in a conventional manner without tearing or cutting the base layer 2 along the perforations 6. In other words, the wound-contacting pad 4 of the adhesive bandage I is placed over the wound with the perforations 6 still intact and the surrounding base layer 2 is adhered to the skin of the patient to keep the adhesive bandage in place.
If additional adhesion is needed then the adhesive bandage I can be torn or cut along one or both of the perforations 6. Figure 3 shows one of the perforations 6 intact while the other has been torn or cut to allow the adjacent regions 8 and 10 of the base layer on either side of the perforation to be spaced apart from one another. This effectively creates two separate anchor points that improve the overall adhesion properties of the adhesive bandage and help to keep it in place for a longer period of time. If both perforations 6 are torn or cut then the adhesive bandage I will be provided with four separate anchor points.
Tearing or cutting the base layer 2 along the perforations 6 can also be useful in situations where the adhesive bandage 1 is to be used to cover wounds on knuckles, fingertips, knees and other joints, for example.
The perforations 6 preferably do not extend all of the way to the wound-covering pad 4. This is important because it means that the wound-covering pad 4 is completely surrounded by an intact or unbroken region 12 of the base layer 2 (shown shaded in Figure 1) which is adhered to the patient's skin to form an annular barrier around the wound site. Dirt or germs are therefore prevented from entering the wound site through the perforations 6. The ends of the perforations 6 may be configured (for example with a T-shaped end) to help to prevent any further tearing in the direction of the wound-covering pad 4 and maintain the intact region of the base layer 2.
Although not shown, the adhesive bandage may have two or more perforations extending from each of the curved edges 2c and 2d. The perforations may also be replaced by proper cut lines or score lines that define a general line of weakness in the base layer of the adhesive bandage.
