Abstract

A cavity wall tie d includes a depth indicator in the form of a deviation e formed in or added to the wall tie at a pre-determined distance from the end of the tie. The arrangement ensures that the tie may be inserted into masonary at a pre-determined depth.

Description

Depth Indicator This invention relates to a wall tie with a device, described as a depth indicator, to ensure that a wall tie is inserted to the correct depth into the masonry used to construct the walls where it is being used.
Cavity walls are built using walls separated by a cavity, and connected by wall ties. When a wall tie is used to connect a wall across a cavity to another wall it is essential that it is inserted to the correct depth into the masonry used to construct the walls, in order to maintain its strength and effectiveness.
Currently this is achieved by the bricklayer or other operative estimating the depth: Consequently, wall ties are frequently not inserted correctly. -To overcome this, the present invention proposes a deviation in the form of the wall tie to act as a depth indicator. The deviation is set at the required depth and pushed tight to the masonry.
This will ensure that the tie is inserted to the correct depth into the masonry. It does not require guess work. It can be used by unskilled operatives. It can be used overhand' when the tie cannot be seen by the bricklayer or operative.
Supervisors inspecting the brickwork can see that the wall tie has been inserted to the correct depth, removing the need for walls to be demolished for inspection.
Detailed Description.
A wall tie is currently constructed from stainless steel wire fabricated as two loops joined by a straight length of wire with a deviation in the middle to enable water to drip away. The proposed wall tie with a depth indicator is formed by adding a deviation to the straight length between the loop and the drip at a pre-fixed location, corresponding to the depth to which the wall tie is to be inserted into the masonry. The location of the depth stop indicator will vary according to the width of cavity required.
The depth indicator could be formed in the wall tie by, for example a u' shaped bend in the wire from which the wall tie is made. This is the example shown. Alternatively, the depth indicator could be formed by a twist in the wire, or an insert at the appropriate spacing.

The outer leaf of masonry is shown at b). The cavity is shown at c.The ties (shown at d) are not inserted evenly. -Figure 4 shows a cavity wall built with a cavity wall incorporating the depth indicator.
