Abstract

A pre-assembled door closing unit 1, for fitting within a vehicle, comprises door brake for holding a vehicle door in any desired position and a closing aid which can automatically close a vehicle door. The door closer 1 can be substantially disposed within a vehicle door and connected to a vehicle body 11 by a connecting rod 9 pivotally connected to the vehicle body 11. The closing aid 3 may comprise an electric motor which drives a gear wheel 8 which meshes with a rack 9 connected to the connecting rod 10; driving the rack thus opens and closes the door. The door brake 2 which retains the door in an arbitrary position may comprise a piston and cylinder unit, 5, 6, 7, filled with damping fluid with a flow valve which may be shut to prevent movement of the piston which is connected to the door via the connecting rod 10.

Description

A motor vehicle comprising a vehicle door The present invention relates
to a motor vehicle comprising a vehicle door which can be held in any desired position by a -5 door brake and can be automatically closed by a closing aid.
"Door brakes" are frequently installed in the vehicle doors of upmarket motor vehicles. The door brake reliably holds the vehicle door firmly in any desired position. If on the other hand the vehicle door needs to be additionally moved, the usual slight effort is sufficient. As a result the vehicle door does not accidentally bang against other vehicles when passengers are entering or alighting in narrow parking gaps, and the vehicle remains reliably open even in a wind or when L5 i _soping ppsition.
In very luxurious vehicles the vehicle doors are additionally fitted with "closing aids", which automatically close a vehicle door without requiring any effort from the passengers.
DE 42 24 132 C2 discloses a system for locking the vehicle door of a motor vehicle and holding the vehicle door in any desired position within the opening range. The door locking system comprises a piston-cylinder unit comprising a pressure tube in which a working chamber filled with damping medium is divided in two by a piston on a piston rod. A valve disposed inside a flow connection and blocking any exchange of volume between the working chambers is actuated so that when a door- moving force is applied at any point on the vehicle door the locking unit opens and remains open irrespective of the pressure inside the door securing system until the locking valve is closed by exerting a braking force on the vehicle door. The door securing system can also be made active if a drive unit forms a closed circuit with a hydraulic supply unit and with the piston-cylinder unit so that the vehicle door is * automatically moved by the flow of medium inside the door securing system.
The aim of the present invention is to construct a motor vehicle containing both a door brake and a closing aid which are easy to fit.
Accordingly the present invention is directed to a motor vehicle according to the opening paragraph of the present specification in which the electromechanical closing aid and the door brake form a preassernbled unit which can be fitted on the motor vehicle.
According to the present invention an electromechanical closing aid and a vehicle door both form a preassembled unit which can be fitted on the vehicle. The door brake and the closing aid are preferably connected to the vehicle body by a connecting or common rod. There is therefore no longer any need to connect the door brake and the closing aid separately to the vehicle body; only the connecting rod needs to be fastened.
The preassembled unit according to the present invention can be quickly and easily mounted. It only has to be connected to the vehicle door and to the vehicle body. In the case on the other hand of a separate door brake and a separate closing aid, both components must be connected to the vehicle door and to the vehicle body. In addition the two separate components must be adapted to one another, whereas in the case of the preassembled unit according to the present invention the adaptation can be made during the preassernbly process. This considerably reduces the required assembly work and the consequently required time for assembly for fitting on the vehicle.
-5 Advantageously the preassembled unit is disposed substantially in the vehicle door. Only the connecting rod will then project from the vehicle door and be connected to the vehicle body. A connecting rod of this construction needs only one recess in the vehicle door for poking the rod through. If on the other hand, as in the prior art, the door brake and the closing aid are separate units fitted on the vehicle, each unit will need a recess in the vehicle in order to connect it to the vehicle body.

Advantageously, the door brake and the closing aid are connected to the vehicle body by a connecting rod.
In a preferred embodiment the rod is pivotably connected to the vehicle body.
Preferably the closing aid comprises an electric motor which drives a gearwheel which meshes with a rack.
Advantageously the rack is connected to the connecting rod.
In a preferred embodiment the door brake comprises a piston-cylinder unit, wherein a working chamber filled with a damping medium in the cylinder is divided by a piston on a piston rod.
Preferably the piston rod is connected to the connecting rod.
An example embodiment of the present invention will now be described, with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which the sole figure shows a diagrammatic representation of a vehicle door pivoted to a motor vehicle.
The Figure shows a preassembled unit 1 comprising a door brake 2 and a closing aid 3. The door brake 2 and the closing aid 3 are non-shiftably and non-rotatably connected by a connection 4. The door brake 2 comprises a cylinder 5 in which a piston 6 is longitudinally guidable. The piston 6 divides the cylinder 5 into two working chambers, each containing a damping medium. A piston rod 7 attached to the piston 6 projects axially out of the cylinder 5. If the piston 6 is j5 riove axiJly_ajQng the piston rod, 7 in the linder 5_sorne of the damping medium must flow out of one working chamber into the other. Means required for transferring the damping medium can vary, as already proposed in the prior art. This results in the damping effect. The closing aid 3 comprises an electric motor which drives a gearwheel 8. The gearwheel 8 meshes with a rack 9 which is guided so as to be movable in the longitudinal direction and at a tangent to the gearwheel 8. The electric motor is designed so that it freewheels if not energised. One end of the rack 9 is connected to a connecting rod 10 which is rotatably pivoted to the vehicle body 11. The piston rod 7 of the door brake 2 is likewise non-shiftably and non-rotatably connected to the rod 10 by an intermediate rod 12. The entire preassembled unit 1 comprising the door brake 2 and the closing aid 3 is mounted in the vehicle door 14 so as to be rotatable around a perpendicular axis 13.
If the vehicle door 14 is opened, the distance between the vehicle body 11 and the face of the vehicle door 14 increases in the region of the preassembled unit 1. As a result the connecting rod 10 moves relative to the preassernbled unit 1, together with the piston 7 and the rack 9. The electric motor is not energised and freewheels, so that the gearwheel 8 does not hinder the automatic movement of the rack 9. On the other hand the automatic movement of the piston rod 7 is damped by the door brake 2, so that the vehicle door 14 is firmly held in any position as long as it is not subjected to further pressure.
In order on the other hand to close the open vehicle door 14, the electric motor is energised so that the gearwheel 8 rotates clockwise, esu.ting in aJinearmovement af1 _the rack 9. As a result the connecting rod 10 connected to the rack 9 is also moved, thus further decreasing the distance between the vehicle body 1]. and the face of the vehicle door 14. The vehicle door 14 is pulled to. The strength of the electric motor is great enough to overcome the damping effect of the door brake 2, which is entrained by the piston rod 7 coupled to the connecting rod 10.
The preassembled unit 1 has four main advantages over a conventional separate arrangement of the door brake and the closing aid: Assembly on the vehicle is simplified and consequently speeded up, since it is only necessary to install the entire, already preassembled unit 1 in the vehicle door and connect the connecting rod 10 to the vehicle body. If on the other hand the door brake and the closing aid are separate, both components have to be installed in the vehicle door and each connected to the vehicle body.
The door brake 2 can be adjusted relative to the closing aid 3 when the preassembled unit 1 is being assembled. No adjustment of the two components relative to one another is required on the vehicle. This likewise shortens the time required for assembly.
The preassembled unit 1 has only one connecting rod 10 for the door brake 2 and the closing aid 3, for connecting the preassembled unit 1 to the vehicle body 11. The preassembled unit 1 is installed in the vehicle door 14, and is therefore invisible. The connecting rod 10 projects through only one opening -in tlie vehicle door 14, -in order to provide a connection to the vehicle body 11. In the case of a separate door brake and closing aid, each component needs a connecting rod to the vehicle body. The vehicle door will therefore require two openings or one large opening through which both connecting rods can be guided. The preassembled unit 1 according to the invention thus enables the vehicle door 14 to be given only one small opening through which the connecting rod 10 projects.
The space required for the preassembled unit 1 in the vehicle door 14 is less than in the case of a separate door brake and closing aid. Also, fewer fastening points are needed. The design of the vehicle door 14 and the arrangement of the individual sub-assemblies in the vehicle door 14 are therefore less restricted than in the case of a separate door brake and closing aid.

Claims (9)

  1. Claims 1. A motor vehicle comprising a vehicle door which can be held
    in any desired position by a door brake and can be automatically closed by a closing aid, in which the electromechanical closing aid and the door brake form a preassernbled unit which can be fitted on the motor vehicle.
  2. 2. A motor vehicle according to claim 1, in which the preassembled unit is disposed substantially in the vehicle door.
  3. 3. A motor vehicle according to claim 2, in which the door brake and the closing aid are connected to the vehicle body by -a connecting rod.
  4. 4. A motor vehicle according to claim 3, in which the rod is pivotably connected to the vehicle body.
  5. 5. A motor vehicle according to any of the preceding claims, in which the closing aid comprises an electric motor which drives a gearwheel which meshes with a rack.
  6. 6. A motor vehicle according to any one of claims 2 to 4 and claim 5, in which the rack is connected to the connecting rod.
  7. 7. A motor vehicle according to any preceding claim, in which the door brake comprises a piston-cylinder unit, wherein a working chamber filled with a damping medium in the cylinder is divided by a piston on a piston rod.
  8. 8. A motor vehicle according to any one of claims 2 to 6 and claim 7, in which the piston rod is connected to the -connecting rod.
