A PAGE MARKER
This invention relates to a page marker and, more especially, this invention relates to a page marker for use on a corner of a page.
Page markers are well known. They range from simple pieces of paper, for example stuck between pages of a book, to devices of differing designs. For many persons, the pieces of paper are not sufficiently elegant.
The devices of different designs tend to be more elegant, but often they do not stay in place sufficiently securely and/or they are expensive to manufacture.
It is an aim of present invention to reduce the above mentioned problems.
Accordingly, in one non-limiting embodiment of the present invention there is provided a page marker for use on a corner of a page, which page marker comprises a flat body, a first aperture in the body, a second aperture in the body and spaced apart from the first aperture, and an intermediate body portion defined by the first and second apertures, and the page marker being such that the body is flexible for allowing in use the corner of the page to be inserted firstly into the first aperture and then secondly into the second aperture in order to secure the page marker on the corner of the page.
The page marker of the present invention is easy to use. It is able to be securely positioned on the corner of the page such that the page marker does not wobble with respect to the page in a plane at right angles to the page. The page marker is able to be produced easily and inexpensively.
The page marker can be used to mark any suitable and appropriate page, for example a page in a book, in a magazine, or in a person's notes.
Preferably, the first aperture is larger than the second aperture.
Advantageously, the first and the second apertures are of such a length and positioning that the corner of the page touches the two ends of the first aperture and the two ends of the second aperture when the page marker is on the corner of the page. The page marker is then stopped from swivelling in the plane of the page.
Usually, the first and the second apertures will be of the same shape.
The first and the second apertures may however be of different shapes if desired.
Preferably, the first aperture is a curved aperture, and the second aperture is a curved aperture. Preferably, the page marker is one in which the first aperture forms substantially a half circle, and in which the second aperture forms substantially a half circle. The first and the second apertures may be of other lengths if desired.
Preferably, the first and the second apertures are slits. If desired, apertures wider than slits may be employed so that the first and the second apertures may then be in the form of slots.
The page marker is preferably circular in plan. The page marker may however be of any suitable and appropriate shape so that, for example, the page marker may be square, rectangular or triangular in plan.
The page marker may be one in which a portion of the body that is engaged by the corner of the page is provided with a grip-enhancing surface.
Any portion of the body that is engaged by the corner of the page may be provided with the grip-enhancing surface.
The grip-enhancing surface may be a partially adhesive surface. Thus, for example, the partially adhesive surface may be formed by a dry glue, or it may be formed by a tacky glue which is provided with a peel-off protective sheet cover, for example a silicon-coated sheet cover or a paper sheet cover.
The grip-enhancing surface may alternatively be formed by a layer of a rubber material. The grip-enhancing surface may alternatively be in the form of grip-enhancing formations folded, cut or otherwise provided in the portion of the body.
The page marker of the present invention may be made of any suitable and appropriate materials. Thus, for example the page marker may be made of a plastics material, paper or card. Alternatively, the page marker may be made of sheet metal. Depending upon the material chosen for the page marker, the page marker may be formed by moulding, by etching or by stamping from a larger sheet of material. The page marker may be made and delivered as a perforated shape that can be pressed out of material, such as a postcard or a greetings card. The postcard or greetings card may be made of paper board of around 260 gsm weight. The page marker may also be made and delivered in a small book of the page markers, with press out page markers in the pages.
The page marker may be produced in any desired colour or combination of colours. The page marker may also be produced to contain promotional material. The page marker may also be produced to contain graphics material, such as a company logo, a trade mark, a trade name or a website address, for example when licensed for promotional purposes.
Embodiments of the invention will now be described solely by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is a top view showing a first page marker of the present invention in use on a corner of a page; Figure 2 is a plan view of the page marker shown in Figure 1 and without the page; Figure 3 is a side view of the page marker as shown in Figure 2; Figure 4 is a sectton illustrating the operation of the page marker as shown in Figure 1; Figure 5 is a plan view of part of the page marker shown in Figure 1 and illustrates how the page marker stays securely in position on the edge of the page; Figure 6 is a top view of a second page marker of the present invention; Figure 7 shows the page marker of Figure 6 in use; Figure 8 shows a third page marker of the present invention; Figure 9 shows the page marker of Figure 8 in use; Figure 10 shows a fourth page marker of the present invention; Figure 11 shows the page marker of Figure 10 in use; Figure 12 shows a fifth page marker of the present invention; Figure 13 shows the page marker of Figure 12 in use; Figure 14 shows how two of the page markers shown in Figure 12 may be produced as part of a book jacket; Figure 15 shows a page marker of the present invention in use with a retainer member; Figure 16 is a view like Figure 15 but shows another way of using the retainer member; Figure 17 shows the first page marker of Figure 1 on a left hand corner of the page shown in Figure 1; and Figure 18 shows the page marker of Figure 1 on the right hand corner of the page shown in Figure 1, but with the corner of the page extending in a different manner through first and second apertures in the page marker.
Referring to Figures 1 -5, there is shown a first page marker 2 for use on a corner 4 of a page 6. The page marker 2 comprises a flat body 8, a first aperture 10 in the body 8, and a second aperture 12 in the body 8. The second aperture 12 is spaced apart from the first aperture 10. An intermediate body portion 14 is defined by the first and the second apertures 10, 12.
Referring to Figures 1 and 4, the page marker 2 is such that the body 8 is flexible for allowing in use the corner 4 of the page 6 to be inserted firstly into the first aperture 10 and then secondly into the second aperture 12. This secures the page marker 2 on the corner 4 of the page 6. The page marker 2 is then securely held and it does not wobble with respect to the page 6 in a plane at right angles to the page 6.
As can best be seen from Figure 2, the first aperture 10 is larger than the second aperture 12. As best appreciated from Figure 1 and 5, the first and the second apertures 10, 12 are of such a length and positioning that the corner 4 of the page 6 touches the two ends 16, 18 of the first aperture 10, and the two ends 20, 22 of the second aperture 12 when the page marker 2 is on the corner 4 of the page 6. The page marker 2 is then stopped from swivelling in the plane of the page 6.
Referring to Figure 2, the first and the second apertures 10, 12 are of the same shape. More specifically, the first and the second apertures 10, 12 are each curved apertures. The first aperture 10 forms substantially a half circle, and the second aperture 12 forms substantially a half circle. As shown in Figure 3, the page marker 2 is flat.
The first and the second apertures are slits as can best be appreciated from Figures 1 and 2. The slits terminate with the ends 16, 18: 20, 22 being sharp and of substantially no width. The slits enable the page marker 2 to obtain a good grip on the corner 4 of the page 6. The ends 16, 18: 20, 22 are such that the ends 16, 20 are in line and the ends 18, 22 are in line. Thus one edge 24 of the corner 4 touches the ends 16, 20, whilst the other edge 26 of the corner 4 touches the ends 18, 22.
Figure 6 shows a second page marker 28.
Figure 7 shows the page marker 28 on a corner 30 of a page 32. The page marker 28 comprises a flat body 34, a first aperture 36 in the body 34, and a second aperture 38 in the body 34. The first and second apertures 36, 38 are shaped as shown in Figure 6.
Figure 8 shows a third page marker 40.
Figure 9 shows the page marker 40 on a corner 42 of a page 44. The page marker 40 has a body 46, a first aperture 48 and a second aperture 50.
The page marker 40 is triangular in shape, whereas the page markers 2 and 28 are circular in shape.
Figure 10 shows a fourth page marker 52 which is square in shape.
Figure 11 shows the page marker 52 in position on a corner 54 of a page 56.
The page marker 52 has a body 57, a first aperture 58 and a second aperture 60. The first and the second apertures 58, 60 extend in two mutually perpendicular directions, whereas the first and the second apertures 48, 50 as shown in Figure 8 are straight lines. In Figure 6, it wilt be seen that the aperture 36 is a curved aperture, whereas the aperture 38 is a straight aperture. In Figure 1 it will be seen that both apertures 10, 12 are curved.
Figure 12 shows a fifth page marker 62. Figure 13 shows the page marker 62 on a corner 64 of a page 66. The page marker 62 has a body 70, a first aperture 72 and a second aperture 74. The aperture 72 is like the aperture 58 but is wider. Thus the aperture 58 may be regarded as a slit whereas the aperture 72 may be regarded as a slot. The aperture 74 is shaped as shown.
Figure 14 shows how three of the page markers 62 may be provided in a book jacket 76. The page markers 62 are defined by a perforated periphery 78 which enables the page markers 62 to be pressed out of a book jacket 76 as shown in Figure 14. Alternatively to help reduce any manufacturing waste, the periphery and all slits and slots may be shapes as kiss-cuts in the jacket 76, or in other material, and pressed out by the user. More specifically, the kiss-cuts almost cut through a material, and remaining material is broken through by pressing out. This saves any waste collection in manufacture as no bits and pieces from slots are left to clean up. In Figure 14, the middle page marker 62 is shown before it is pressed out, the bottom page marker 62 is shown pressed out, and the top page marker 62 is shown pressed out and fitted to a corner of the book jacket 76.
Figure 15 shows how a sixth page marker 18 of the present invention in use with a retainer member 82. The retainer member 82 may be made of thread, elastic or any other suitable and appropriate material. Figure 15 shows how the member 82 extends transversely the plain of a book 84.
Figure 16 shows the member 82 of the page marker 80 extending in the plane of the book 84. If the member 82 is made of an inextensible material such for example as a thread, it acts to attach the page marker to the book and thus prevent the page marker from getting lost. If the member 82 is made of an elastic material and is, for example, an elastic band, then the member 82 may be wrapped around the book in order firstly to attach the page marker to the book, and secondly to keep the book closed. The member 82 may be in the form of a band, tie, ribbon or thread.
Figure 17 shows the page marker 2 of Figure 1 on a left hand corner 86 of the page 6, instead of the right hand corner 4 as shown in Figure 1.
Figure 18 shows the page marker 2 of Figure 1 on the corner 4 of the page 6, but with the corner 4 having been passed under the leading part of the page marker 2 and then subsequently in opposite parts of the book marker 2 to those shown in Figure 1.
It is to be appreciated that the embodiments of the invention described above with reference to the accompanying drawings have been given by way of example only and that modifications may be effected. Thus, for example, the first and the second apertures 10, 12 could be wider than shown so that they would then be in the form of slots rather than slits. The page marker 2 is circular in plan as shown but it may be of any other suitable and desired shape. A portion of the body 8 that is engaged by the corner 4 of the page 6 may be provided with a grip-enhancing surface. Any suitable and appropriate grip-enhancing surface may be employed such for example as a partially adhesive surface, a rubber layer, a latex layer, or a formation formed as an integral part of the page marker. The page marker may be made of any suitable and appropriate materials including plastics materials and metals.
The page marker may be made by moulding, stamping or any other desired process. The shape of the apertures 10, 12 may be different from those shown. All of the page markers of the present invention may be employed in the manner generally shown in Figure 1, that is passing the page corner of a page over the marker edge, then down through the first aperture, then under the marker, and then up through the second aperture, and then over the page marker. Alternatively, all of the page markers of the present invention may be employed in the manner shown in Figure 18 so that the page corner may then be passed under the page marker edge, then up through the first aperture, then over the page marker, and then down through the second aperture, and then under the page marker. As an alternative to pressing the page marker out of a book jacket as shown in Figure 14, the page marker of the present invention may be pressed out of a separate sheet of card.
