Abstract
A business card is formed so that a USB connector can be created by folding the card along a centerline crease. The USB contacts are formed on the surface of the card and are connected to a memory on the card. To overcome the problem of the connector being too thin and not being held securely in the USB port on a PC, the card is folded in half. The resilience of the card forces the connectors on the upper surface into contact with the connectors in the PC port. The card may also be designed such that the constituent components of the connector form an "E" shape in the card. This allows the top of the card to be broken away along a preformed cut and then folded to form the connector. The memory may hold contact details, brochures or other digital information.
Description
Description -USB Business Card
Background
TraditiOnal paper based business cards contain large amounts of detail about oneseff and company.
Over the years, the amount of information on business cards has increased to indude mobile telephone numbers, email addresses, company websites and company addresses and telephone numbers; much of this information needing to be stored in an individual's computer database for future reference (i.e. syncing with mobile devices such as PDA's and mobile phones).
The USB (Universal Serial Bus) Business Card is a solution to the problem of storing this information and in a medium that is convenient for downloading to a computer.
Product Description
The presenter of the USB Business Card is able to pass on their business and personal details as digital information (in addition to the printed information on the surface) on a standard sized business card measuring 55mm x' 90mm.
Telephone numbers, email addresses, fax numbers, Skype' details, Outlook' contacts and in addition, for the first time (depending. on memory storage size), company brochures saved as.pdf files can now be stored on a business' card.
The choice of incorporating a USB interface is that it is universal', allowing the USB Business Card to connect to all laptop and desktop computers incorporating USB sockets (all PC's and laptops).
The USB interface is a simplified version of that commonly found on computer peripherals, insofar as it dispenses with the metal surround and thick plastic internal blade and only relies on the four gold contacts. This has the advantage of keeping the USB Business Card thin, a basic requirement of a standard business card.
The four gold contacts of the surface connect to rewritable memory imbedded on the card. However, because the business card is made of thin. plastic (0.75mm)', itis too. thin to connect with the USB connection built into a PC or laptop. As such, the business card has a crease running along its longest length down the centre, to facilitate folding (see image 2, fig b).
Once folded, the crease forms a living' hinge. This doublingin thickness of the card along with the spring' in the plastic, forces the four gold contacts on the card against the USB contacts on the PC/laptop when placed in the USB socket (see image 2, fig c.), completing the circuit and allowing the computer to read the information stored in the memory.
For aesthetic reasons, the USB connector on the card is surrounded by plastic to form a square sided business card (see image 1). This end part is removed by folding along a pre-formed partial cut (see image 2, fig a.), prior to making the fold along its length as described above.
The discarded end piece has the added aesthetic advantage of forming. the letter E' in the USB business card and is a USP (Unique selling point) and ownable iconic design.
The materials and design of the USB Business Card make this a limited use item, and is not intended for continuous application. As such, after downloading the information stored on the card to a computer, the card is intended to be reformed and stored. in a traditional business card folder.
Additional Information The USB Business Cards could come on billets of 4 cards or more, designed to go through a USB Business Card printer (see image 3). This would be a specialised business card printer, designed to print an individuals own design and information using the software provided.
Once all are printed, they can be separated into individuar cards along preformed cuts, and from there, individual data free cards can be inserted back into the printer and through a connection to the computer have the required data written to the memory.
