Abstract

A metal location pin for use with various jigs, designed to fit into location holes which may be either too large or too small. A metal shaft 1 may be provided with a metal stop or cap to prevent the pin from being pushed though the whole of the jig body. A recess in a top portion of the pin may receive a ring 2, which will expand or compress in order to fit into a jig hole.

Description

A metal location pin for use with various jigs'.
DescrjDtlpn A metal location pin for use with various types of jigs, where the location pin determines the position of the jig on the work piece but where the holes in which they fit, due to variations in the manufacturing process, may vary in size, either too large or too small thus making the jig unusable with proprietary plastic jig pins, the potential of which can cause a lot of expensive scrap product, both for the manufacturer and potentially for the carpenter.
Backprou The present invention relates to a metal pin for use with various jigs.
Jigs are made by various manufacturers and are used where there may be many and repetitive cuts or functions to be performed in wood work, joinery or in kitchen fitting applications.
Holes at various positions are provided in the jig into which, generally, a plastic pin is inserted in order to position the jig accurately and to position that jig accurately over a multiple of work pieces.
Problem A significant problem is that during the manufacture of these jigs, the cutting equipment can wear causing the holes to be too small, or the cutter can be manufactured too large or the holes may be over interpolated with the cutter which may cause the hole to be too big.
If this happens then this can mean that a lot of expensive scrap is created.
The predominant or current method for positioning jigs is to use a plastic jig pin. In some cases this can compress to fit into a hole that is a little smaller than usual, however, if the hole is too large then this will mean that the pin will not fit Correctly and can cause an inaccurate and potentially expensive incorrect cut for the carpenter.
Also, over time, these plastic pins can wear thus causing an ever increasing degree of inaccuracy.
This present invention seeks to overcome these problems with a solution that will work over time, accurately and consistently.
Essential Features According to the first aspect of the invention, there is provided a metal shaft that provides an accurate datum against which a work piece will sit in order to set distance and location for an accurate cut.
According to the second aspect of the invention, there is provided at the top of the metal shaft, a metal stop or cap, which when the pin is inserted into a jig will act as a stop and will prevent the pin from being pushed entirely through the jig body.
According to the third aspect of the invention, there is provided a recess in the top portion of the metal pin body shaft and below the stop or cap which will receive a ring which will expand or compress in order to fit a jig hole.
Introduction to the Drawings
The present invention will now be more particularly described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings which: Figure 1. Shows a side view of a metal pin 1' without the ring.
Figure 2. Shows a side view of a metal pin 1' with ring 2' fitted.
Referring firstly to figure 1 of the drawings, there is shown a first embodiment of the metal jig pin 1', which has a shaft and end stop or cap and a stepped recess below that cap.
Referring to figure 2 of the drawings, there is shown a second embodiment of the metal jig pin 1' as shown in figure 1 but with ring 2' fitted.

Claims (5)

  1. Title:-Metal Worktop Jig Pin Claims 1) A metal location pin for use
with various types of jigs, where the location pin determines the position of the jig on the work piece.
  2. 2) A metal location pin as claimed in claim 1 which will fit into a machined hole within a jig where the hole may be too small or at the extreme end of the specification tolerances which will not allow the full insertion of proprietary plastic jig pegs.
  3. 3) A metal location pin as claimed in claim 1 which will fit into a machined hole within a jig where the hole may be too large or at the extreme end of the specification tolerances which will allow the full insertion of proprietary plastic jig pegs but the fit is too loose as to cause an inaccurate cut when the jig is used.
  4. 4) A metal location pin as claimed in claim 1 and 2 which utilises a compressible ring positioned where the pin, if inserted into a jig whose positioning holes may be too small or at the extreme end of the specification tolerances, which when fully inserted into the jig, compresses to ensure that the pin is in full contact with the jig body.
  5. 5) A metal location pin as claimed in claim 1 and 3 which utilises an expandable ring positioned where the pin, it inserted into a jig whose positioning holes may be too large or at the extreme end of the specification tolerances, which when fully inserted into the jig, expands to take up any slack or gap in the fit to ensure that the pin is in full contact with the jig body.
