Abstract

A photographic device 2 is used to take photos confirming a pre-preparation surface scrapping step of pipe ends prior to electro-fusion bonding 3, has been completed by a bonding operative. In parallel, an electro-fusion bonding data storage device 1 stores bonding parameter data. The photographic data is combined with data from the bonding parameter data storage device 1, and additionally with GPS positional data of the bonded joint. The data may undergo automatic analysis by a programmed inspection device, and/or may be transmitted to a remote database by a transmission device 2. The transmission device 2 may also incorporate the photographic device 2, and a GPS data device 2.

Description

QUALITY CONTROL OF ELECTROFtJSION JOINING ON SITE AND SUBSEQUENT
ANALYSIS
DESCRIPTION
The jointing of polyethylene pipes by electrically heated fittings is very familiar to the Gas and Water Utilities. These fittings known as electrofusion fittings are capable of making a welded joint having a strength equal to or more than the pipe itself. However the discreet chemical nature of the extruded pipe surface interferes with the bonding process and can lead to joint failure if it is not removed prior to jointing. At the present time there is no way of knowing that an operator has carried out this important surface scraping process as the evidence is buried in the ground almost immediately after Joint completion.
The present invention provides a means of taking photographic evidence of the condition of the pipe surface prior to jointing and integrating this visual data with all of the additional technical data generated when fusing an electrofusion fitting, thus providing a comprehensive history of all quality related parameters. In order to facilitate subsequent tracing of the joint in the event of failure a GPS location is combined with the joint quality data.
An electrofusion control unit (1) (see drawing a) supplies power to the fitting (3) and would normally enable the automatic recording of applied current, voltage, time and manually inputted identification of the operator, job name etc. A second device (2) (see drawing a) is capable of being connected to the control unit (1) to facilitate the sharing of the received data. The second device (2) is provided with a camera, a GPS location system and a radio frequency transmission facility.
The normal procedure for making a joint is varied in such a way as to include the additional data provided by device (2) STEP 1 The pipes to be joined are cleaned and scraped and then clamped in the correct orientation, (see drawing b) Device (2) is then used to photograph the construction (b) in such a way that the evidence of pipe scraping (5) is clearly shown.
STEP 2 The fitting to be joined (3) (see drawing c) is introduced onto the pipe and the components re-clamped.
Control unit (1) is connected to the fitting (3) and power is applied to heat the joint.
At the completion of the joint a photograph of the installation is taken by device (2) together with a GPS location. The photograph is arranged such that the rising melt indicators (6) are displayed giving evidence of Joint completion.
STEP 3 At the completion of the joint, device (2) is activated to transmit all of the accumulated data, via GPRS, to a secure and dedicated server where the information is stored for analysis in real time via the world wide web.
Several thousand joint records may be gathered in this way and subsequent analysis may be carried out manually or in the case of the pipe surface preparation data by means of an automatic scanning camera controlled by software provided with go -no go standards.

Claims (1)

  1. QUALITY CONTROL OF ELECTROFUSION JOINING ON SITE AND SUBSEQUENT
    ANALYSIS
    (1) A method of retrieving electrofusion joint information for subsequent analysis by combining standard data generated within the electrofusion processor with separately determined photographic data and positional data derived from a GPS device.
    (ii) A method of capturing photographic data showing the state of preparation of pipe surfaces prior to jointing and subsequent automatic analysis of this data by means of programmed inspection devices.
