Abstract

Apparatus for the collection of liquid flowing down the outer surface of a vertical pipe, comprises a water-collecting tray including a flexible portion at an edge thereof, wherein the flexible portion includes a slot, whereby the tray can be fitted snugly around the pipe; and means for holding the sides of the slot together.

Description

LIQUID COLLECTING APPARATUS FOR PIPEWORK
Field of the Invention
This invention relates to liquid-collecting apparatus for use on vertical pipes.
Backaround of the Invention
Radiator pipes generally rise vertically to connect with radiators through valves, glands or other coupling, which may leak or seep, or which may need to be uncoupled.
Leaking liquid is often contaminated, and tends to remain in contact with the connecting pipework surface.
Summary of the Invention
According to a first aspect, the present invention is apparatus for the collection of liquid flowing down the outer surface of a vertical pipe, comprising: a water-collecting tray including a flexible portion at an edge thereof, wherein the flexible portion includes a slot, whereby the tray can be fitted snugly around the pipe; and means for holding the sides of the slot together.
According to a second aspect, the present invention is a method for collecting water flowing down the outer surface of a downpipe, which comprises fitting a water-collecting tray as defined above around the pipe and applying the holding means thereto, in order to hold the sides of the slot together.
Description of the Invention
The apparatus of the invention can be adapted for use on any vertical pipe that has a leakage of water, which needs to be diverted or collected. The water-collecting tray may be configured to fit snugly around any diameter pipe, such as 22 mm copper or plastic piping. In use, the tray may rest on the floor or another flat surface, or it may be held in place by some other means.
In a preferred embodiment, the water-collecting tray is dished. The tray is preferably rectangular. It may be made of a resilient material, such as a plastics II ItI II.
In a preferred embodiment, the flexible portion is made of a non-permeable material, such as neoprene rubber. For example, the tray is rectangular, and the flexible portion is located in a corner of the tray.
The tray and the flexible portion may be integral or separate and mutually engagable. In one embodiment, the flexible portion is configured to slot into a corresponding recess in the tray, or vice versa. In a preferred embodiment, the means for holding the sides of the slot together is a resilient member, configured to engage the flexible portion and which can be fitted snugly around the pipe, 3 whereby water is directed onto the flexible portion, or directly into the tray.
Preferably, the top surface of the flexible portion is slanted, whereby water is directed into the tray.
In a preferred embodiment, the apparatus additionally comprises a splash guard, adapted to the position above and around a portion of the edge of the tray including the flexible portion. Still preferably, the splash guard is made of a flexible material. Preferably, the tray is rectangular, and the means for directing is positioned above and around the corner of the tray.
The invention will now be illustrated, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figures 1 A, I B, 2A and 2B are side views of an embodiment of the liquid-collecting apparatus of the invention.
Figures 3 and 4 are side views and respectively show the apparatus immediately before and after the holding means engages the flexible portion.
The drawings show a vertical radiator pipe (3) and associated radiator valve (2) of a radiator (1). The apparatus can be used to collect water leaking from the valve. A water-collecting tray (4) includes a flexible portion (5), which includes a slot (7), whereby the tray can be slid around the pipe (3) forming a snug fit.
Figures 1 and 2 additionally show a splash guard (8). This is in the form of a plastic sheet, which has been adapted to attach to the tray at its edge, and fit around the pipe and the corner including the flexible portion.
Figures 3 and 4 show a more detailed view of the flexible portion and the holding means. The flexible portion is adapted to slot into a corner of the tray. The flexible portion contains grooves, which fit over the edge of the tray, holding it in place. The surface of the flexible portion is slanted, and the outside edges are raised, in order to minimise splashing of liquid, and in order to direct leaking liquid into the collecting tray.
The means for holding the sides of the slot together is a resilient member, with a lipped end, for ease of insertion and removal into the flexible portion. There are two grooves (9) on either side of the slot. The resilient holding means (6) is configured to be inserted into the both of these grooves simultaneously, thereby closing the sides of the slot around the pipe, forming an essentially water-tight seal. 1)

Claims (7)

1. Apparatus for the collection of liquid flowing down the outer surface of a vertical pipe, comprising: a water-collecting tray including a flexible portion at an edge thereof, wherein the flexible portion includes a slot, whereby the tray can be fitted snugly around the pipe; and means for holding the sides of the slot together.
2. Apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the flexible portion is separate from and configured to slot into, the tray, and configured to direct into water into the tray, in use.
3. Apparatus according to claim 1 or claim 2, wherein the holding means is a resilient member configured to engage the flexible portion, which can be fitted snugly around the pipe.
4. Apparatus according to any preceding claim, additionally comprising a splash guard, adapted to be positioned above and around a portion of the edge of the tray and the flexible portion.
5. Apparatus according to claim 4, wherein the splash guard is made of a flexible material.
6. Apparatus substantially as herein described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
7. A method for collecting water flowing down the outer surface of a downpipe, using apparatus according to any preceding claim, which comprises fitting the water-collecting tray around the pipe and applying the holding means thereto, in order to hold the sides of the slot together.
