Abstract

A safety device for a window, the safety device comprising a barrier for preventing a person from falling through an open window, and means for removeably mounting the barrier in or adjacent to the window.

Description

A Safety Device The invention relates to a safety device for a
window.
There have been a number of unfortunate accidents in which a person has fallen out of an open window. Such accidents are a particular problem for young children, it is known to install a fixed security grill in a window in order to prevent burglars from entering a property through that window. Such a grill may also be used to prevent accidents. However, a problem with such grills is that they are unattractive and obscure the view from the window. They are also expensive.
It is an object of the invention to seek to mitigate these disadvantages.
The invention provides a safety device for a window, the safety device comprising a barrier for preventing a person from falling through an open window, and means for removeably mounting the barrier in or adjacent to the window.
The mounting means may hold the barrier in or adjacent to the window by * I. means of friction. S...
S *SI S
The mounting means may comprise at least two members, each of which, in use, engages an edge of the window. S..
The window-engaging members may be moveable from a first position in : which the barrier can be mounted in or adjacent to the window to a second position in which each of the members engages an edge of the window.
Any suitable means may be used to move the window-engaging members from said first position to said second position.
For example, it may be done by means of screws, springs or telescopic devices.
The window-engaging means may comprise means for removeably fastening the window-engaging means to the edge of the window. These fastening means may be used to ensure that the safety device is more firmly held in place. As they are removeable, the safety device may still be taken down from the window, if this is required.
The fastening means may comprise any suitable means such as screws.
The size of the barrier may be fixed. Although there may then be some windows for which the safety device is not usable, it will still be usable for many windows as the barrier does not have to block the entire window. rt only has to block enough of the window to prevent a person, and in particular, a child, from falling out of the window.
Alternatively, the size of the barrier may be adjustable. This will increase the numbers of windows for which the safety device is usable. For example, the barrier may consist of a grill made from telescopic tubes or a collapsible lattice.
The safety device may be made of any suitable material. For example, it may be made of metal or a plastics material or a combination of those two materials. * S. Si *
* *. . . . The Invention will be now be illustrated by way of example with reference to the following drawings: * S. Figure 1 shows a perspective view of a safety device according to the * invention; and S. i*** * Figure 2 shows a side view of the safety device of Figure 1 mounted in n *S* * open window.
The safety device shown in the drawings comprises a barrier 1 and four members 2 for removeably mounting the barrier in a window 3.
The barrier 1 consists of two parallel, spaced apart side bars 4 and five cross bars 5, which extend between the side bars 4. The cross bars 5 are substantially perpendicular to the side bars 4.
Each of the side bars 4 and cross bars 5 consists of two tubes which are telescopically mounted together so that the length of the side bars 4 and cross bars 5 can be adjusted.
The four mounting members 2 are mounted in pairs on each side bar 4 so that there is one mounting member 2 at each end of the side bars 4.
Each mounting member 2 comprises a screw 6, one end of which is attached to one of the side bars 4, and a foot 7, which is mounted on the screw 6 by means of a screw threaded aperture at its centre. The foot 7 may be moved up and down the length of the screw 6 by rotating the foot 7. The screw 6 carries a locking nut 8 to allow the position of the foot 7 to be fixed.
Each of the feet 7 also includes two screw holes 9. These may be used to screw the safety device in place once it has been mounted in the window 3.
In use, the size of the barrier 1 is adjusted to a size which is just smaller * ,. than that of the window 3 in which the safety device is to be mounted by :.:: adjusting the length of the side bars 4 and the cross bars 5. *I..
* ** If necessary, each of the feet 7 is rotated to a position which allows the safety device to be mounted in the window 3. *S. *
The safety device is then mounted in the open window 3, and each of the S. S*S.
* feet 7 is rotated in the opposite direction to the previous direction until that foot 7 is brought into engagement with an edge 10 of the window 3, and the safety device is firmly held in place.
If desired, the safety device may be more firmly held in place by screwing it Into position using the screw holes 9 in each of the feet 7.
When the safety device is no longer needed, it may be removed by unscrewing the screws holding the feet 7 in place (if used), and rotating the feet 7 so that the feet 7 move away from the edges 10 of the window 3, and the barrier 1 is no longer held in place.
In the illustrated embodiment, the size of the barrier is adjustable in order to allow the safety device to be used with a wide range of windows. However, the barrier may also be of fixed size. Although there may then be some windows for which the safety device is not usable, it will still be usable for many windows as the barrier does not have to block the entire window. It only has to block enough of the window to prevent a person, and, in particular, a child from fatling out of the window. * S. * . I * *5 *SS I * *I5* * S. * S * * S.
