Abstract
A method of attaching a secondary line to a main fishing line comprises providing a swivel attachment (1) having a connecting ring (3) rotatably mounted in a swivel body (2). A spaced pair of loops (4) project from the body, the arms having aligned openings (7, Fig. 2) through which a line may pass, threading the main line (6) successively through the opening (7, Fig. 2) in the first of the loops (4), through a crimp (5) and then through the opening (7, Fig. 2) in the other of the loops (4). The resultant assembly is positioned at the desired location along the main line and the crimp is squeezed on to the line (6) to secure the swivel assembly. The secondary line can then be secured to the connecting ring, for example by knotting, in conventional manner.
Description
METHOD OF ATTACHING A SECONDARY LINE TO A FISHING LINE AND
SWIVEL ATTACHMENT FOR USE IN THE METHOD
Field of the Invention
This invention relates to a method of attaching a secondary line to a fish-ing line, for example to link a baited hook to a line terminating in a weight.
Background to the Invention
For some types of angling, notably beach angling, where a weighted line is cast as far as possible into the sea, it is customary to tie a weight to the end of the line, both to ensure sufficient weight for casting and to hold the line in po-sition after casting. A hook is then tied to the end of a short secondary line, which is linked to the main line above the weight by means of a swivel connec- tion having a loop or eye which can rotate relative to a body which is free to ro-tate about the main line but which is constrained from movement along it by means of crimps -compressible tubular metal elements through which the main line passes before the crimp is compressed or crimped into position.
A typical swivel assembly requires the user to thread a first crimp on to the line, followed by a spacer bead, the swivel body, another spacer bead, and then a second crimp. Each of the crimps then needs to be carefully positioned and compressed into place, ensuring that the spacing of the two crimps is suffi-cient to allow free rotation of the swivel about the line, but not such as to allow significant movement of the swivel along the line. This operation is difficult and time consuming, especially when conducted in cold and windy conditions often experienced on beaches. Crimping also requires care, since excessive pres-sure can weaken the line, risking premature failure, while insufficient pressure could allow the crimp, and therefore the other components, to slide along the line in use.
In an attempt to overcome these difficulties, it has been proposed to use a tubular crimp body having a central portion separated from the opposed end portions by circumferential flanges retaining a swivel rotatable around and on the entral portion. The fishing line is then passed through the tubular body to the desired position, and each of the ends is crimped into place. While this pro- vided a simpler operation than fitting the conventional arrangement, it still in-volved two crimping operations, with the inherent risks associated with crimping, and was substantially more expensive than the conventional arrangement.
Summary of the Invention
The present invention provides a method of attaching the secondary line to a main fishing line as defined in the claims. The invention also provides a swivel attachment for use in the method of the invention.
The method of the invention is straightforward and quick, requiring only one crimping operation and the minimum of threading of components on to the line. The swivel attachment is simple and cheap to manufacture.
Brief Description of the Drawings
In the drawings, which illustrate an exemplary embodiment of the inven-tion: Figure 1 is a side elevation of the swivel attachment after installation on to a line; Figure 2 is an end view of the attachment shown in Figure 1, omitting the line and crimp; and Figure 3 is a cross-sectional view of the attachment shown in Figure 2.
Detailed Description of the Illustrated Embodiment
Referring to Figures 1 and 2, the swivel I has a hollow body 2 from which extends a ring 3 which is freely rotatable within the body. A pair of wire loops 4 extend from the end of the body remote from the ring. The loops 4 have a generally L-shaped profile so as to leave a space between them to accommo-date a crimp 5, which is essentially a tube of metal through which a line 6 can be passed, and which can be squeezed, for example by pliers, to flatten the tube, thereby trapping the line 6 inside it, and thereby securing the crimp at that portion of the line. The loops 4 are arranged to provide aligned holes 7 there-through, through which the line 6 can also pass.
In use, in order to attach a secondary or hook line to the main line, the line is fed successively through one of the holes 7, through the crimp 5 and through the other hole 7. The swivel and crimp are then slid along the line to the desired position, and then fixed by squeezing the crimp using pliers. The secondary or hook line can then be knotted or otherwise secured to the ring 3, thereby leaving it free to rotate around the main line and for the hook to rotate relative to the swivel body to prevent twisting of the line.
Figure 3 shows a configuration for a swivel, in which the ring 3 is con- nected to a metal ball 8 trapped within the hollow swivel body 2, but freely ro-tatable within it. In simpler configurations, the ball is replaced with a disc of metal, the interior of the swivel body being dimensioned to receive the disc as a
rotatable fit.
It will be appreciated that, while reference is made throughout this speci-fication to "loops", and it is preferred to form the loops as simple shaped-wire loops, other configurations providing aligned holes for the passage of fishing line could be employed. It will, however, be important to ensure that no sharp edges are employed which might damage the fishing line and reduce its strength.
Claims (5)
1. A method of attaching a secondary line to a main fishing line, comprising providing a swivel attachment having a connecting ring rotatably mounted in a swivel body with a spaced pair of loops projecting therefrom, the loops having aligned openings through which a line may pass, threading the main line successively through the opening in the first of the loops, through a crimp and then through the Opening in the other of the loops, positioning the re-sultant assembly at the desired location along the main line, crimping the crimp to secure the swivel assembly, and attaching the secondary line to the connect-ing ring.
2. A method according to Claim 1, wherein the loops are L-shaped in profile whereby the spacing between the loops is greater than the width of the swivel body.
3. A method of attaching a secondary line to a main fishing line, sub-stantially as described with reference to the drawings.
4. A swivel attachment for use in the method of any preceding claim, comprising a connecting ring rotatably mounted in a swivel body with a spaced pair of loops projecting therefrom, the loops having aligned openings through which a line may pass.
5. A swivel attachment, substantially as described with reference to, or as shown in, the drawings.
