Description:
2-way radio wireless operator interface
Background:
Radio transceiver equipment, or 2-way radio equipment, is defined as a device that contains both a transmitter and a receiver sharing common circuitry or a single housing. If no circuitry is common between the transmitter and receiver functions, the device is a classified as radio transmitter-receiver equipment.
Radio transceivers are called Medium Attachment Units (MAUs) in IEEE 802.3 documents.
Radio transceiver or transmitter-receiver equipment installed as a fixed installation, fitted to a vehicle, or worn as portable equipment, has a handheld microphone unit physically and electrically attached.
This requires the operator of the radio transceiver or transmitter-receiver equipment to have a hand constantly occupied by the handheld microphone unit.
The handheld microphone unit contains microphone and a push-to-talk (PT1') button.
The radio transceiver or transmitter-receiver equipment also has an internal speaker or external extension speaker to allow the operator to hear the received audio.
Statement of Invention:
This application proposes a method to allow the operator to use the radio transceiver or transmitter-receiver equipment without having a hand constantly occupied.
The 2-way radio wireless operator interface, hereafter referred to as the unit, providing a physical and electrical connection to the radio transceiver or transmitter-receiver equipment. This replaces the connection of the handheld microphone unit and extension speaker unit if present. The unit also provides a physical and electrical connection to the extension speaker unit if present and retained in the installation.
The unit also provides a wireless interface to one or more Bluetooth compatible devices.
The primary Bluetooth device will be a Bluetooth headset. This replaces the handheld microphone unit and the push-to-talk (PT!') button functionality with the headset microphone and button. The Bluetooth headset earpiece speaker also replaces the extension speaker from the radio transceiver or transmitter-receiver equipment.
The secondary Bluetooth device can be an additional Bluetooth headset.
The secondary Bluetooth device can be a Bluetooth capable mobile phone.
The secondary or tertiary Bluetooth device can be a Bluetooth capable controller or disability controller device.
Advantages: The replacement of the handheld microphone Unit means that if the radio transceiver or transmitter-receiver equipment is installed in a vehicle then hands free operation can be achieved.
Because the handheld microphone is replaced with any compatible Bluetooth headset an operator can interface with the radio transceiver or transmitter-receiver equipment without requiring specialised or dedicated handheld microphones.
Because the unit uses the Bluetooth headset earpiece to replace the function of the radio transceiver or transmitter-receiver equipment extension speaker this allows the operator to have a more private conversation. The unit also contains a selection system to allow the original extension speaker to be used for voice audio reception, instead of the Bluetooth headset earpiece. If not required the radio transceiver or transmitter-receiver equipment extension speaker can be removed, simplifying the installation.
Because the unit supports connections to multiple Bluetooth headsets it can support two simultaneous operators of the same radio transceiver or transmitter-receiver equipment. This is not normally possible with the handheld microphone unit and is an extension of the radio transceiver or transmitter-receiver equipments operational capabilities.
Because the unit supports connection to Bluetooth capable mobile phones it provides an integrated, hands free solution for both the radio transceiver or transmitter-receiver equipment and Bluetooth capable mobile phone handset. This allows the operator of the Bluetooth headset primary device to operate both the radio transceiver or transmitter-receiver equipment and the Bluetooth capable mobile phone handset.
Because the unit supports connection to a Bluetooth capable controller or disability controller device it allows extended or disabled operation of the radio transceiver or transmitter-receiver equipment.
The unit contains an additional system to aid the use of radio transceiver or transmitter-receiver equipment with local radio repeaters. The unit provides a transmit timeout warning tone to the operator to indicate that the local repeater timeout is approaching. The period of this timer can be configured to ensure compatibility with the various local repeater timeout periods in use. This system can be disabled if not required.
Because the unit's electrical interfaces to the radio transceiver or transmitter-receiver equipment audio connections are fully isolated they reduce the potential effects of ground loops within the installation and reduce noise coupling from the radio transceiver or transmitter-receiver equipment or power source.
Because the unit's electrical interface to the radio transceiver or transmitter-receiver equipments push-to-talk (PTT) input connection is fully isolated and highly configurable it enables connection to any type of radio transceiver or transmitter-receiver equipment.
Because the unit contains a power management system the unit enters a minimum power state after a period without use. This prolongs battery life in portable installations and reduces current consumption in vehicle installations.
