Description
Dispensing of Gloves
BACKGROUND
a. Field of the Invention
The present invention relates to the dispensing of hand-held items, and in particular to an apparatus and method for dispensing such items, and particularly to the dispensing of gloves from a dispenser.
b. Related Art The control of infection of patients in hospitals, clinics, and doctors' surgeries has become an ever more pressing concern with the rise of infectious bacteria resistant to multiple antibiotics, in particular methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus (MSRA). In the United Kingdom alone there are thought to be about 5,000 deaths a year from infections caught in hospitals but some experts believe the number could be as high as 20,000.
Research has shown that high levels of MRSA are present on everyday items in hospitals. Samples taken from an intensive care unit at a London hospital found :: MRSA on charts, bins, pens, medical notes, phones and computer keyboards.
*** There was also MRSA present on staff aprons and hands. The most common ::::. route for MRSA infection is between patients or via a doctor or nurse. Hospital staff can spread MRSA by using such items after having contact with patients.
* * Research has also shown that if someone has MRSA on their hands, the bacteria would be left on the next four surfaces touched by that person. Once MRSA is on an item it will remain there for up to 80 days unless that item is cleaned.
Disposable medical gloves can help prevent cross-contamination, but a problem arises if external parts of the glove are touched by a person prior to or during 5265a2 08 May 2007 donning of the glove. Such external parts can then become contaminated prior to contact with a patient.
Most gloves used in hospitals and clinics are examination gloves, and these are used in large numbers such gloves are supplied not in individual sterile packages, but in relatively inexpensive cardboard dispensing boxes. One way of controlling contamination on such examination gloves is disclosed in patent document US 5,816,440. In this disclosure gloves are packaged with over-folded cuffs within a box having a dispensing aperture. The fingers of each glove are looped partially or interfolded around the cuff of the subsequent glove so that as each glove is pulled from the aperture, the cuff of the next glove is pulled out of the aperture to make it easy for a user to get hold of the over-folded cuff of the next glove.
Apart from the additional manufacturing steps entailed by this arrangement, the cuff over-folding and interfolding of neighbouring gloves reduces the number of gloves which can be packed in a gwen volume. Furthermore, the cuff of the next glove may not always be reliably pulled from the aperture.
Another glove dispensing system is disclosed in US 5,921,434, in which gloves are packed flat in the same orientation one on top of another within a box having a :. dispensing aperture. The cuffs of the gloves are held in place by an elastic band, which passes through a hollow roller that presses on the inside surface of a part of the cuff of the next glove to be dispensed. Neighbouring gloves are partially ::::. adhered to each other so that as each glove is pulled from the box the cuff of the *25 next glove is pulled partially out of the box by the action of the roller and adhesive between the gloves.
S.....
S
This arrangement encourages users to touch a glove only by the cuff and so minimise the risk of contamination, but at the cost of increased mechanical complexity and the need to apply an adhesive to the otherwise pristine external surface of the glove.
5265a2 08 May 2007 It is an object of the present invention to provide a more convenient and reliable arrangement for dispensing gloves.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
According to the invention, there is provided a dispenser for disposable gloves, comprising a container and a plurality of disposable gloves, wherein: -each glove has a cuff, the gloves being stacked one on another with the cuffs of the gloves being aligned on one side of the stack of gloves; -the stack of gloves is held within the container, the container having a plurality of sides, and said sides defining at least one vertex; -the container has in use a dispensing aperture for dispensing said gloves, said aperture spanning one vertex defined by said sides and being covered prior to use by a removable cover; and -the gloves are oriented in said container so that said gloves are positioned for dispensing cuff-first through said aperture.
The provision of the aperture gloves spanning a vertex defined by three or more sides of the container, with a stack of gloves oriented with cuffs towards the dispensing aperture, helps to minimise or eliminate touching of the container surfaces surrounding the gloves when a user reached to pull out one or more .:: gloves from the dispenser. This is particularly the case if a portion of the cuffs is positioned such that an approaching hand can approach the exposed cuffs along :.:::. any of three orthogonal axes without coming into contact with any of the edges of * j25 the aperture.
* A user can then pull out a glove by the cuff without contaminating the main surface I..
* portion of the glove, either by touching the glove directly or by dragging the glove across previously contaminated aperture surfaces, thus helping to keep the external surfaces of the glove free from pathological micro-organisms.
In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the aperture spans three sides of the 5265a2 08 May 2007 container and has on two of said sides substantially straight edges and on the other side a concave curved edge.
The dispenser most preferably includes compression means for compressing the stacked gloves prior to dispensing, and release means for releasing the compression to aid free dispensing of gloves, for example one at a time, from the top of the stack of gloves, through said aperture.
The use of a releasable compression means can then help to prevent shifting of the gloves during transport even when the gloves are not tightly packed inside the container. It is particularly helpful if the gloves are packed with some free space above the stack of gloves to aid subsequent dispensing. When the compression is released, the free space allows even the first glove to be easily removed by a user.
In one embodiment of the invention, the compression means serves to compress the stack of gloves both in the vicinity of the cuffs and in the vicinity of the fingers of the gloves, thus further helping to maintain the integrity of the stacked gloves.
The compression means may include a plate urged into contact with a topmost :. glove in the stack of gloves. The plate may be left behind in the container after release of the pressure in order to provide a dust cover to the stacked gloves. S...
:.:::. The compression release means may be operatively connected to the removable *25 cover so that when the removable cover is removed to expose the aperture, the compression is automatically released.
S
S *..
in one embodiment of the invention, the cover is a lid that extends over the sides defining the vertex. Alternatively, the cover may be a tear-off cover.
In various embodiments of the invention, the cover may include at least one projection that serves to compress the stacked gloves prior to dispensing. The or 5265a2 08 May 2001 each projection may extend through a projection aperture in a side of the container, for example a top side of the container.
The compression plate may be urged into contact with a topmost glove in the stack of gloves by the or each projection.
In various preferred embodiments of the invention, the container is a six-sided, rectangular box, and the aperture extends around a right angled corner of the box defined by three adjacent sides.
The aperture may extend around three adjacent sides of the container, including a top side, and a pair or adjacent lateral sides including one lateral side towards which the cuffs are oriented. The apertures in the pair of adjacent sides may extend at least 75%, and most preferably at least 85%, of the way from the top side towards an opposite bottom side of the container.
The apertures in the container lateral sides may be substantially square or rectangular, with the aperture in the top side being substantially circular or elliptical. This affords the maximum space for reaching and pulling out a glove, which will generally be in a direction generally parallel with a plane in which each glove lies. Alternatively, the aperture in the top side may be substantially straight between the edges of the apertures in the adjacent sides in order to increase the strength of the top side. I...
*5 Also according to the invention, there is provided a dispensing system for dispensing disposable gloves, comprising a wall-mountable holder and a dispenser for disposable gloves, the dispenser being according to the invention, * wherein the dispenser may be securely and removeably held in the holder so that gloves can be dispensed from the dispenser when held in the holder.
The holder may comprise: an upright back plate; mounting means for mounting the back plate to a wall surface; supporting means for supporting the base of the 5265a2 08 May 2007 dispenser when held in the holder; urging means for urging the container towards the back plate; and restraining means for restraining the movement of the dispenser when in use a glove is pulled cuff first by a user from the dispensing aperture.
If the container is a. six-sided rectangular box, with the aperture extending around a right angled corner of the box defined by three adjacent sides, the dispenser may be held by the holder with the aperture being located between the urging means and the restraining means The holder may engage with just four of the sides of the box, namely a base, a back side and two adjacent lateral sides in which the aperture is provided.
The invention additionally provides a method for dispensing disposable gloves cuff-first using a dispensing container having a removable cover and compression means for compressing stacked gloves within the container prior to dispensing, said compression means being operatively linked to the cover, comprising the steps of removing the removable cover to expose a dispensing aperture in the container, and thereby automatically releasing the compression of the gloves within the container to aid subsequent cuff-first dispensing of gloves from the dispensing aperture. *S.. * *

DETAILED DESCRiPTiON
Figure 1 shows a dispenser I for disposable gloves, according to a first 5265a2 08 May 2007 embodiment of the invention. The dispenser I includes a rectangular container 2 having around one corner a tear-off dispensing cover 4. The container may be made from a card-like or plastic material, for example cardboard or PET. The container is in the form of a rectangular box, three sides of which are visible in the drawing, namely a top side 6, a short dispensing end side 7, and a dispensing long side 8. The cover extends a vertex 12 defined by the three sides 6, 7, 8.
The cover 4 may be opened by manually pressing against a perforated seam 10 that runs continuously around top, end and long sides 6, 7, 8 to tear off the cover 4 from the remainder of the container 2', now opened, as shown in Figure 2. When removed, the cover reveals a three-sided aperture 11, which has a curved, concave edge 31 the top side, and substantially straight, vertical and horizontal edges 31, 32 on the other two sides 7, 8.
The cover has a tab 14, which extends along a longitudinal central portion of the container top surface 6. As illustrated by Figures 3 and 4, the tab 14 has a pair of apertures 15 formed by inwardly projecting fIngers 16 cut from the tab 14. Each projecting finger 16 engages with a transverse slot 17 in a compression plate 18 inside the container 2. The tabs are each angled downwardly and outwardly towards opposite ends of the container in order to apply an even downwards pressure on the compression plate 18. The compression plate has an arc-shaped cut-out 34 which, omitting the area of the tab 14, matches the shape of the top n... surface edges 31 to the aperture 11. * * ***
: * 6 As shown in Figure 2, the open container 2' is initially filled with a stack of *.a disposable gloves 20, each individual glove 21 being oriented in the same way with a cuff 23 nearest to the end side 7 and the aperture 11 to be formed by the : removal of the cover 4. The stack does not completely fill the interior space inside ** the container, between a bottom side 22 of the container and the top side 6, and so there is some free space 25 between the compression plate 18 and the top 6, as shown in Figure 3. The arrangement is such that before removal of the cover, during shipping and storage, the cover exerts a compressive force (F) 24 5265a2 08 May 2007 -10-.
downward on the compression plate and hence on the stack of gloves 20. The fiat compression plate contacts substantially the entire top glove in the stack of gloves 20, which maximises the static friction holding the gloves 21 in place.
In removing the cover 4, the tab projections 16 become disengaged from the compression plate slots 17, thus automatically releasing the compression 24. The gloves will tend to expand resiliently, reducing the free space 25', as shown in.
Figure 2, but still leaving enough space for each glove 21 to be removed freely from the top of the stack 20 without dragging other adjacent gloves out at the same time.
Figures 5 to 9 show a dispenser for disposable gloves, according to a second embodiment 101 of the invention, in which features similar or analogous to those of the first embodiment are indicated by reference numeral incremented by 100.
For clarity, the stack of gloves is omitted in the drawings for the second embodiment.
The second embodiment has a tear-off cover 104 which has one internal V-shaped projection which, before removal, engages compressively with the stacked gloves (not shown) along a line parallel with the cuffs. There is no compression plate, and in this embodiment the curved top edge 131 of the aperture 111 extends in a semicircular curve between the vertical edges 132 of the n... aperture 111. Once removed, the gloves may be removed cuff-first through the S...
. dispensing aperture 111. * S **.*
Figures 10 to 18 show various views of a dispenser for disposable gloves, according to a third embodiment 201 of, the invention, in which features similar or : analogous to those of the first embodiment are indicated by reference numeral *j* incremented by 200.
The third embodiment 201 differs from the first two embodiments 1, 101 in that the cover is in the form of a lid 204 which when the container 202 is closed extends 5265a2 08 May 2007 -11 -fully around all fives sides except the base 222 of the open container 202'. The lid 204 is initially retained to the remainder of the container 202' by means of a strip of adhesive tape 30 which joins the cover 204 to the base 222 of the container 202'.
When the tape 30 is removed, the lid 204 can be removed thus opening the container 202'. The lid has a pair on inwardly extending cylindrical projections 216, one towards each end of a top plate 40 of the lid 204 along a longitudinal centre line of the lid 204. The projections 216 pass through a pair of matching circular projection apertures 42 in the container top surface 206 to press upon the compression plate 218, and thereby stabilise the stack of gloves (for clarity, not shown) inside the container 202 during shipment and storage.
When the cover 204 is removed, the compression of the gloves is automatically released, after which the gloves can be freely removed from the container owning to the shape of the aperture 211 and free space 225' between the compression plate 218 and the container top surface 206.
It should be noted that during use, the compression plates 18, 218 of the first and third embodiments 1, 201, serve as a dust shield to help prevent contamination of the gloves 21.
In all three embodiments 1,101, 201, the aperture 11, 111,211 spansavertex 12, * 112, 212 defined by a right angled or cubic corner of the container 2, 102, 202, .... with the stack of gloves 20 being oriented with cuffs 23 towards the dispensing : * .35 aperture 11, 111, 211. This helps to minimise or eliminate touching of the S...
container surfaces or edges 31-33, 131-133, 231-233 surrounding the aperture when a user reaches to pull out one or more gloves 21 from the dispenser. In all : three examples, except for the bottom few gloves in the stack 20, a hand can approach the cuffs 23 along any of three orthogonal axes defined by perpendiculars to the three surfaces 6-6, 106-108, 206-208 defining the aperture, without the risk of contact with any of the edges of the aperture. It is therefore desirable to minimise as far as possible the remaining lower edge of the container 5265a2 08 May 2007 end wall 7, 107, 207 as far as possible, preferably to no more than about 25% of the distance from the top side 6, 106, 206 towards the bottom side 22, 122, 222, and most preferably to no more than about 15% of this distance.
Also in all three examples, the cuffs 23 abut a portion of the end container wall 7, 107, 207 remaining after removal of the cover 4, 104, 204. This portion is sufficient in extent to prevent the stack 20 from being dislodged out of the container, but small enough to allow easy access without a hand touching the aperture vertical edges 32, 132, 232. It is therefore desirable to minimise as far as possible the remaining side edge of the container end wall 7, 107, 207 as far as possible, preferably to no more than about 25% of the width from the long side 8, 108, 208 of the container towards the opposite back side, and most preferably to no more than about 15% of this distance.
Figure 20 is a perspective view of a single wall-mountable holder 50 suitable for holding a dispenser for disposable gloves according to any of the various embodiments 1, 101, 201 of the invention. The holder has an upright back plate 51, mounting screws 52 for mounting the back plate to a wall surface (not shown), a base 53 for supporting the base 22, 122, 222 of the dispenser when held in the holder 50. The holder also has a resilient front clip 54 and an end tab 55 both of which stands upwards from the holder base 53.
:... As shown in Figures 25-27, when an opened glove dispenser box 202' is placed in .... the holder 50, the front clip 54 is sprung outwards relative to the back plate 51 and * so presses the container towards the back plate 51, and the end tab 55 serves to restrain the movement of the dispenser when in use a glove is pulled cuff first by a user from the dispensing aperture 211. * *
** When gloves run out, the empty container 202' can be quickly removed from the holder 50, and a fresh dispenser inserted into the holder.
Figure 28 and 29 show, respectively, a second example of a wall-mountable 5265a2 08 May 2007 holder 150 suitable for holding a dispenser for disposable gloves according to any of the various embodiments 1, 101, 201 of the invention, in which features similar or analogous to those of the first example 50 are indicated by reference numeral incremented by 100. This triple holder works in the same way as described above, but provides the advantage that multiple glove dispensers can be held by the holder, which is convenient when one of the dispenses runs low, or when different types or sizes of glove need to provided at one location.
The invention therefore provides a convenient and reliable arrangement for dispensing gloves in a medical or clinical environment. * * * *** *S. * * **** * ** *. S *S.. *5 *
