Abstract
A reel for cable or the like filamentary product comprises two opposed and mating parts A,B molded from a plastics material with each having a cylindrical barrel part 10, radial flange 11 and male and female connectors 12,13 on the barrel part serving to attach the reel parts together as an interference fit so as to complete the reel. Each part of the reel may further comprise an integrally formed handle 18 extending diametrically across each respective flange 11. Each reel part may receive an enlarged annular flange 16 prior to assembly of the two parts.
Description
ACABLE REEL
This invention concerns a reel for cable or like single or multiple filamentary products.
One known form of cable reel comprises a core in the form of a metal stamping forming a cylindrical barrel with axially extending lugs at each end of the barrel which pass through an annular, radially extending flange usually of stiff card or plywood, the lugs then being bent over to retain the flanges in place. Such reels tend to be heavy and expensive in manufacture and, being of metal, may be susceptible to corrosion when stored for long periods.
Another known form of reel of a plastics material comprises two parts each having a cylindrical barrel and a radial flange, the parts being bonded or thermo-welded together to complete the reel. Accuracy of manufacture is required to ensure that the two cylindrical barrel parts are properly aligned and thus form an integral cylinder when bonded or welded together. To provide drive-engaging parts for reel driving mechanisms it is necessary to provide additional separate parts which have to be bonded or welded to the completed reel.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a reel for cable or the like which is simple and inexpensive in manufacture and may be formed as two molded parts which attach together without the need for bonding or welding.
According to the present invention a reel for cable or like single or multiple filamentary products comprises two opposed and mating parts, each part having a cylindrical barrel and a radial flange, and a plurality of cooperating male and female connectors constructed so that by bringing the parts together with the respective cylindrical barrels axially aligned, the male connectors of one part are received as an interference fit by the female connectors of the other part to complete the reel.
Each of said parts may have both male and female connectors disposed alternately around the inner circumference of the cylindrical barrel.
The male and female connectors may be provided as pins and sockets extending parallel to a central axis of the reel and integrally formed with the respective reel parts.
The respective barrel walls of the two reel parts may have additional peripheral mating parts of castellated form.
The reel parts may be identical and of a plastics material.
Further according to the present invention there is provided a reel for cable or like single or multiple filamentary products comprising two opposed and mating parts each part having a cylindrical barrel and a radial flange, and means for attaching the parts together to complete the reel; characterised in that a carrying handle is integrally formed to extend diametrically across the flange of at least one of the reel parts.
The carrying handle may incorporate formations to engage with a reel driving mechanism.
The formations may be at least one aperture extending parallel to the axis of the reel.
The formations may include a central aperture aligned with the central axis of the cylindrical barrels, and at least one other aperture spaced radially from the central aperture.
The reel may have a carrying handle integrally formed to extend diametrically across the flange of each of the reel parts, the two carrying handles being mutually parallel and having aligned apertures to engage with a reel driving mechanism.
The reel may have one or more further formations on the outer surface of each cylindrical barrel, adjacent the associated flange to receive and retain an enlarged annular flange.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a cable reel made in accordance with the invention; Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional view of the reel; Fig. 3 is an internal view of one part of the reel; and Fig. 4 is an external view of the reel part shown in Fig. 3.
Referring now to the drawings, the reel comprises two integrally molded plastics parts A and B, each part comprises a cylindrical barrel portion (10) and a radial flange (11). The barrel (10) and flange (11) of each part are integrally molded.
As can be seen most clearly from Fig. 3, on the inner wall of the cylindrical barrel (10) are angularly spaced pin and socket connectors (12, 13) respectively. Each reel part has four pins and four sockets spaced alternately around the wall (10).
Further connectors (14) provided around each barrel (10) also serve, as will be described, to connect the two reel parts together.
On each of the cylindrical barrels (10) externally thereof and adjacent the flange (11) is a formation such as a circumferential ridge (15) adapted to receive and retain an enlarged annular flange (16) which may be of a paperboard or plastics material, or plywood.
The reel is assembled by bringing the parts A and B together with the respective cylindrical barrels (10) axially aligned such that the pins (12) of each part are received as an interference fit by the sockets (13) of the other part. Simultaneously, the additional connectors (14) come together to provide a central seam (17) of castetlated form, thus completing the reel.
The formations (15) retain the enlarged annular flanges (16) they may, instead, be a friction fit as they will be prevented from being dislodged also by the product to be A carrying handle (18) is integrally formed with each reel part to extend diametrically across the associated flange (11). The two reel parts are disposed such that when they are brought together the respective carrying handles (18) are disposed parallel to each other. Each of the carrying handles has a central aperture (19) and a pair of radially spaced apertures (20) for engagement with a reel driving mechanism. The apertures 19 and 20 of each carrying handle are mutually aligned in parallel to the axis of the reel.
An array of further apertures (21) are provided around each of the flanges (11).
Preferably1 each of the reel parts is of identical form for ease of manufacture, and since the parts are assembled one with the other as an interference fit the reel can be made up rapidly and with ease. If necessary, in some cases, a tool may be used to squeeze the two parts together for the final interference fit. Detents means may be incorporated to provide a positive closure.
The enlarged annular flanges (16) may be prepared with manufacturers' or suppliers' data which may be pre-printed thereon.
While a reel made in accordance with the invention is lightweight and provides a cost saving in manufacture, nevertheless it is of durable material and may be re-used once a product has been wound off the reel, if necessary by replacing any damaged enlarged annular flanges.
